Facebook For PlayStation 3: Semi-Confirmed

Yesterday, some screenshots were apparently posted on Sony's PlayStation site that showed a Facebook logo within the PS3's Xmedia bar. The leaked images have since been pulled (of course) but they indicated the ability to manage your Facebook in your PlayStation Network account settings, change the color of your PlayStation Network gamercard and view photos in new ways.

Eurogamer's "inside source" confirmed that Facebook integration is on the way for the PS3, and the official Sony Public Relations response is  that there will be more information on this "very shortly." So it's looking very, very likely that you'll be able to enjoy live updates on your friends Farmville status on your PlayStation 3 very soon. But do you actually care?

Personally, I'm not feeling it. With Facebook integration looking like a done-deal for the PS3 and already confirmed for the 360, I find myself saying "meh." It will be some other thing on my dashboard that I look at once, and never check again.  But I'm kind of a misanthrope who prefers to generally be left alone. (Except on twitter! Follow my twitter feed here!).

What about you?

I have both systems and I perfer playing games more on my 360 than my PS3. The reason is the online is much smoother and the community is much better. PS3 just isn't as user friendly nor do I feel the sense of community that I do when I play with my Xbox Live friends. That's why it's worth the $7.99 per month. PS3 might be doing it for free but "better" I beg to differ.

It's not about Sony "copying" Microsoft, but instead saying, "everything Microsoft does we do better and FREE". Right now it's coming down to 'price' both consoles are at the same price point, so which gives you the best *bang* for your buck?

    Sony, Ps3:
    Blu-ray
    Built in wi-fi
    Bluetooth
    Rechargeable controllers
    Free online community
    Netflix
    Facebook
    Twitter
    Integrated Web browser
Excellent Customer/Technical Support (from person experience)
    Reliable Hardware (will last long)
Third-party Hardware support (external hard-drives, upgradeable HDD, etc)
    Price 299.99

    Microsoft, Xbox 360
    external wi-fi (100$)
    external blu-ray player (100-200$)
    MS distributed/license hardware's (limited third-party support)
    No Bluetooth
    Non-rechargeable controllers
    No Web browser
    DvD Format
    Poor to mediocre Customer/Technical Support
    50$ a year online community
Twitter, Facebook, Last. fm (gold members only yearly price above)
Unreliable Hardware (it's a gamble on how long it will last)
Price 299.99 (without counting additional cost of external hardware/s)

This is why Sony's, Ps3 has been outselling the 360 since September on. The game is changed and people are becoming more aware of what the Ps3 offers over the 360. So Sony is making sure they add what people want or whats "hot" now with teens, kids, and adults and unlike its competitor they can give it for free if necessary.

Wow sony just loves trying to be everything the xbox is, they seriously cant come up with there own ideas. And 2 im sick of hearing you sonys fanboys use the excuse of "oh ps3 has internet browser so we had it first, yea but it sucks major ass and is super slow. The xbox can have a browser too if you connect too a media center and use the interent browser app from there but everyone knows that its a waste of tie cause browsing on a system is super dumb

This is a plys for Sony in my opinion. Just another feature that people will use and enjoy. I wish that they left the facebook to Xbox and made a myspace intergration. lol that would be tight!!!

Its not a big deal for me since I have a great computer, but I love how nothing stays a secret with regards to Sony (I am not being sarcastic, it is just awesome).
PS3 Slim, PSP Go, Price Drop, real motion controls, Return of BC, and now this. Whoever is the keeper of the secrets needs to be slapped and then thanked.

How can you be a misanthrope (of any kind) who addresses the masses on a regular basis? And how did you impress whoever you had to impress at G4 to land the job you have if you're a misanthrope? If you were a real misanthrope, you would never leave your apartment and you would be spending all your time playing video games and aimlessly browsing the web, leaving snarky comments when possible.

I can see the use of this on Xbox but why use it on Ps3 when you can use the browser?

This would be the only site that could the Apps for. Since myspace on a PS3 looks like a cell phone. So you cannot any of the myspace apps at all. Maybe in the future they will fix it so myspace and facebook will on the x-media bar.

If it happens...It happens. I don't use facebook or twitter (if a logo does come to the XMB) so it wont matter to me anyways. We've had this all along with the web browser, so not really a need for it. I guess if anyone on PSN wants a faster access to it thats great, BUT...what I do want is a next update to remove those horrible gray boxes around my friends psn names, and at least have an option for original Playstation 3 owners to keep the original entrance theme when turning on the console. I get annoyed seeing the PS3 slim logo, when I own the orginal.

This doesn't mean a thing to me - will never use these. I barely have time to play the games as it is.

you know what s so funny, everyone says Sony this Sony that. Sony is great, but every time Microsoft upgrades there Xbox 360 features, Sony is right behind them. Sony needs to get its own ideas instead of coping someone ells. lets see, oh ya, Netflix, facebook, & i bet twitter is next, oh yes they might start charging monthly service for the on line service.

Can someone explain why when XBL announced they were integrating Facebook and Twitter into their dashboard, it was a terrible, stupid idea, but now that Sony might do it, it's "ten points for Sony"? It all seems a little hypocritical to me.

    Sorry...I can't help myself...

    @Smarter Than You

Bored? You're kidding, right? PS3 owners are getting "maybe a weeks worth of play" out of our games? Bet the first time you've turned your 360 on in months was to play MW2 just a couple nights ago. I've been rolling in exclusives for over a year now (LBP, KZ2, Infamous, UC2, Demon Souls, R&C), not to mention the great multiplat titles. PS3 owners haven't had to whine about MW2 servers being down for a day (which are now fixed...see everybody on PSN) b/c we have a backlog of games to get into. Don't know if you'd have survived if the 360 servers tanked.

    @z26mb4027

You may want to actually mention those games you're talking about because it's clear you have no idea which system has the better games...no clue.

BTW...don't care about Facebook...Microsoft could've kept it for all I care.
