Since everyone is talking about or playing or buying extra copies of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 right now, Adam couldn't let this week's Soapbox go by without talking about the controversial "Airport Scene" we've all been hearing so much about.

While this video is fairly light on spoilers, if you haven't finished the single-player campaign in the game, you might want to wait before you hear what the Sess has to say on the subject. That being said, how did playing through that scene make you feel? Or did you skip the level, expecting it to be gratuitous and offensive? Let us know what you think, but again, please keep the discussion intelligent and civil.

Update: Adam did not go on Fox and Friends. It was his decision, and it was due to scheduling.

Well i gotta say it was a truly a good scene
concerning the whole violence thing it did
give the choice to skip plus if people wanna say
oh that shows video games are bad and send a bad message
look at movies like 2012,fight club, and saw i love all those movies
but all of them have the same violence level or suggestive themes
I think everyone with a news station and needing a Scapegoat picks
on the gaming industry.Truly god-forbid that something like that happens but seriously
people gotta stop blaming games for every psycho that go's on a rampage

I'm on the side of artistic freedom and it's my belief that American democracy is better off when ideas can be expressed without threat of silencing or ban. That said, if game developers allow attacks on innocent civilians, shouldn't they also act with freedom in portraying Islamic terrorists and their role as enemies in shooter-games? Too often, I see leftists use the race card against games that allow players to kill Muslim enemies. There aren't a ton of Neo-Nazis trying to take over the world currently so why do developers seem to shrink away from plots involving real life enemies to our way of life? Is fear of a fatwa (I mean you Roland Emmerich) really that pervasive? If you have the guts to go there with civilian characters, have the courage to do so with terrorists as well! Hats off to the Fallujah game among others for some realism.

Never mind, the AAP statement had nothing to do with anything, the Fox paid actor just thought it might distract anyone not smart enough to google it, it deals with kids and this game is for Mature 17yrs and up ADULTS.

"I find it a little bit disturbing that people here could actually justify shooting up an airport full of innocent people for the so called "Greater good""

Really ? I was pretty positive what I would find at a gamer site. Gamers know the difference between fantasy and reality. You should look into that for yourself.

The Fox news MW2 segment was all around bad, even the Fox paid actors seemed like they really didn't care, did the Institute of Pediatrics put out a statement about video game violence stating what that Fox paid actor said ?
Loved when the not Fox paid actor kept feeling the need to repeat "it's not real, it's not real" ha ha ha

Maybe its because im not from the US but im having a hard time understanding the big controversy about this.... Is it because you kill civilians? Is it because you are a terorist. Ive played video games for the last 20 years and during these years ive murdered, robbed, raped and sold people. I have blown up entire villages jsut for the fun of it, ive killed my best friend and my whole family, ive been smoking pot, ive made pornos and im sure Fox have yelled about all these things =) Why cant you play terorist but killing 10000 people as a ganster is ok. You Americans are just hilarious =)

third of all the game didnt really give you a choice! no matter what your character, Joseph Allen, helped kill 100+ people in an airport, sure you could turn away or skip the level but it doesnt change the fact that you participated in it. Therefore you cannot compare it to Fallout 3 with Megaton or Fable 2. If the game gave you a choice to try to stop it from happening (and maybe lose contact with Makarov temporarily as a consequence) that would be one thing, but the airport level is just as scripted and linear as the rest of the game. Higher form of art my ass! IW COULD have presented this level in an artful tasteful form by but i think they failed at doing so for reasons i have already stated.

I find it a little bit disturbing that people here could actually justify shooting up an airport full of innocent people for the so called "Greater good"

fighting for the greater good would be blowing makarovs brains out in the elevator and taking a bullet from his other men, sacrificing yourself.

i am in full support of free speech and i in no way think the game should get banned but i think Activision took a ridiculous story line and just made it downright tasteless. as for it being some sort of "realism".....im speechless at that, first of all six men could not wipe out an entire airport, plain and simple, it would take a lot more people to do something on such a scale, if it were only six men their killing spree would end a lot sooner and with a lot less deaths. Second of all there is no way that a man could go from being a decorated war hero to mowing down innocent people within 2 days, it takes a LOT of brainwashing to get to that point. The thing that disturbed me the most about it was that it was the intention of the storyline for me to mow down those innocent people, and in the end it added almost nothing to the storyline, your character dies, you never "get your man" and it launches a full scale russian attack on washington DC (wow how realistic)

also for those of you saying "thats how the C.I.A. works!" need to read Secret History of the CIA. The CIA would NEVER, EVER be that STUPID to put an american agent on a terrorist mission no matter how much they could gain from it, simply because if any evidence of an american agent was left behind there could be a severe backlash (sound familiar?) More likely the CIA would have known about the attack and let it happen but made sure they had no part in it. Unlike the movies, CIA agents usually arent gun slinging spys, they usually have desk jobs, wheras the dirty work is done by people from other countries who are supported by them. so while his argument may be flawed in some areas, i agree with Drithe, the CIA would never bee so callous and stupid and it is an uneducated insult to the CIA and the american government (which i have no problem insulting if there is grounds for doing so)

So as Infinity Wards arguments are continuously shot full of holes, i begin to see the real picture here. IW put it in there to sell more copies, they realized that all the corners they cut (no party chat, swindling PC users with lack of dedicated servers) might depricate their sales so they decided to play the controversy game and add something that would spread word of mouth, adding law suit proof measures as well, the more i am beginning to see through the skin of this airport level the more i am seeing it for what it really is: useless self indulgent violence.

And on top of that, its not fun either! i have no problem with giving people hilariously unrealistic deaths in GTA (like putting a satchel charge on a car in traffic and watching it go kaboom or decapitating a bunch of elvis lookalikes with a samurai sword) but i dont see the fun in watching realistic looking people suffer and crawl through pools of blood,

as for the people saying "you guys are babies its awesome stop being all butthurt" to each his own i guess, you should check out the Rape video game in japan, im sure youd love it, and im sure youd be psyched if they made a Clockwork Orange video game.

I played it, didn't shoot any civilians. Spent a ton of time trying to kill the terrorists, and was forced to kill officers in order to continue the story.

In response to your soapbox: I think there is a fundamental difference between video games and other media. It is only in games that you make the decisions. I think the implications of that shouldn't be understated. I also don't think that the effects of playing a game like this and killing civilians should be exaggerated. But still, the examples of art that is dark and shocking all place the viewer in the audience. Games place the viewer as a character within the story.
Personally I'm interested in experiencing dark things in books and media. But I disagree with video games having a place in creating awareness or understanding of evil. I think that games will do this. But I don't want them too. I can come to understand serial killers or rapists in a certain light through movies and books, but I don't want to be tapping the A button in order to have such things take place.

i agree on what IW did by leaving that segment in the game. this for the first time, a video game made me ask myself, "wait, a second what just happened". IW did a good job by throwing people out of their comfort zone, because it got people to think about their own sense of morals for a change.

I generally like what you have to say Adam, but I don't think I've ever seen a more smug face (not meant to antagonize, but seriously) than when you said, "South Park is not a textbook". You re right. It's not a textbook, but you seem to be saying that somehow means that the opinion presented in the episode is invalid based on the fact that you didn't hear it in college. I know a rude way to put it (reaction to perceived smugness) and that it's a bit of a jump to make, based on a facial expression and a tone of voice, but you did seem to disregard the information based on its source rather than the point it was trying to make.

I don't expect you to suddenly agree with Matt Stone and Trey Parker, because you clearly have strong convictions on the matter; I just wish you would be less dismissive of the point many of us (some less intelligently than others) were trying to bring up when we referenced that particular episode of South Park. I think you brought up an even more poignant issue inadvertently in your last soap box, by bringing up the term hate speech which as I said in my last post, is a scary term because it implies that a part of speech exists that is separate from free speech Sorry this was all about the previous Soapbox, but you got me early on with the South Park/Textbook comment.

    Respectfully,

I'd just like to say in my own defense that while South Park is not a text book, it is still a viable social commentary.

    Hey Adam

I played and beaten the game and I wasn't offended by that scene. Heck you fight against Muslims(being a Muslim myself) I wasn't offended by that either you fight in Afghanistan and in the multi-player you fight in Karachi,Pakistan(my parent's home country) even that doesn't offended because I know their a lot NATO troops,Paki and Afghan troops fighting for the people and human rights and freedoms.

Even the part with ISS being destroy could be controversial as well but that scene was awesome. The entire game is awesome and I love it. The muti-player and spec ops and single player mode is a lot fun.

Fox news does not understand video games nor gamers

I dont get how everyone flips out over this scene when there are many many more in other games like GTA4 or Starwars the force unleashed on the prologue.
