Since everyone is talking about or playing or buying extra copies of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 right now, Adam couldn't let this week's Soapbox go by without talking about the controversial "Airport Scene" we've all been hearing so much about.
While this video is fairly light on spoilers, if you haven't finished the single-player campaign in the game, you might want to wait before you hear what the Sess has to say on the subject. That being said, how did playing through that scene make you feel? Or did you skip the level, expecting it to be gratuitous and offensive? Let us know what you think, but again, please keep the discussion intelligent and civil.
Update: Adam did not go on Fox and Friends. It was his decision, and it was due to scheduling.

I almost was slightly upset that they allowed you to skip the mission, because it's a big part of the story and they're giving you the option to censor it. I don't know, I'm just really against censorship.
But at any rate the way I played it was that I went in shooting as many people as I could, because I thought if I didn't then the Russians that they 'worked so hard to get me next to' would suspect me a fake and turn on me. Hm.

I agree with Adam on this Soapbox and I wish you good luck with Fox and Friends.
redheadjhawk
Sessler, you really should have gone on fox and friends. The guy the had to defend the game totally blew it and did not do a good job pleading his case. I would trust you to debate it.

lol he's so animated =D

Right on, Adam.

Im not gonna lie to any of ya'll the airport scene made me sick to my stomach..... But i also realize that it is trying to get a point across in the storyline. Im glad the developer did this, because i think it will put storytelling in video games in the right direction. I hope anyways....

When I played through I didn't hesitate in shooting but that doesn't mean that I wasn't affected by the scene, just walking by and seeing people crawling out of the way it was a bit surreal because of (like you said with the guy who wrote the review) it is such a realistic setting and its a bit daunting how that very well could happen. Now, just because I went along and shot the civilians, doesn't mean I'm going to do the same in real life because thats what it is REAL LIFE. Unfortunately most media outlets have employees who don't play video games and will never understand how level headed gamers can make the distinction. So good luck on FOX Adam, cause they will try and rip you to pieces.

being the one in few people who have not yet picked up the game i already feel a little displaced. i somehow feel that i need to play the airport level, but that there must be someway that i can do it where i dont feel like a monster

Adam, I agree with you and I hope you do go on Fox & Friends. I consider myself a conservative politically, but I totally believe in COMPLETELY free speech and that video games are an art form. I have yet to play MW2 (im getting it Friday) but I know im gonna love it and that that scene will impact me somehow. From what I have seen in trailers and clips, and what you have said I dont believe that I will be offended. We (gamers) need intelligent people like yourself to go on the air and defend gaming as an art and shove the ignorance down those peoples throat. Good luck Adam. I hope and pray that you have continued success.
P.S. I disagreed with you last week. However I still love your weekly Soapbox and thanks for being yourself week in and week out.

I am pretty sure that one of the dudes on Fox and Friends is retarded but if they have the person that did the review from their site on it could actually be good. (http://www.foxnews.com/story/ 0,2933,573591,00.html) I was shocked they weren't freaking out. The reviewer didn't think it was bad, just taken out of context. I didn't think it was any worse than the stuff I do in GTA: IV. Fidgit thinks it the most disgusting game ever http://fidgit.com/archives/200 9/11/is_modern_warfare_2_the_m ost_d.php

Look, I am not saying this should be banned or anything but this scene and the scenes around Burgertown were a little too real. I know this was just a new way to play a shooter and new experince. That being said I did find those levels a tad disturbing. Then again maybe that was the point, after all War is Hell

@Drithe (and any others with his argument)
I can understand where you're coming from man, as a gut reaction and all, but there are a few gaping holes in your argument.
First and foremost, the character you play as, though starting out as an American soldier, is at the time of the level in question a C.I.A. Operative in an elite unit. If you think that our country does not put C.I.A. personell in that deep of cover, and do atrocious things (if absolutely necessary) in order to get the bad guy and keep this country safe, then you are sadly mistaken.
Second gaping hole is something that you yourself detailed with your own words: "...*letting* the player kill innocent civilians...". Note the key word, "letting". It does not make or force you in any way shape or form to kill innocent civilians. You as the player control the trigger to that gun, and you alone make that decision to kill innocent civilians. I actually think it was a conscious decision on IW's part to give you that option, meaning there is no penalty, in game or otherwise for just walking along and not harming a soul. Now does it force you to watch it and move along with every gut-wrenching second? Yes, but that, along with being forced to walk slowly, adds to the impact of the scene. It says before that level even loads that (the character you play) will have to sacrifice some of himself and who he is as a person to get close to the bad guy in question.
Again, I understand the gut reaction, but like so many others, you seem to be in the camp of people who simply watched the vid, got a *very* brief synopsis as to what's going on, and took things out of context. We all need to be a little more intelligent than to take that gut reaction and let it make our minds up for us. Need to use that analytical part of our brains and actually look at the whole picture before jumping to conclusions, like oh-so-many of the news outlets are sure to do. Good luck Sess.

The airport scene was the best level of the game. No one was shooting back until the end. I made sure that everyone was killed. Even the ones that were crawling because they were injured.
People need to be able to separate reality from the virtual.
Wiseguy1287
If video games are going to emerge as an art form, then we need to cross this boundry and accept it for what it is. Even if it is just a game, it is going to make one (I know it will me) uneasy to do it.
Santeria13
I wasn't offended at all. in fact, I was expecting something a lot worse. As I was paying though, I couldn't help but sigh and think of all the people who will be outraged that such a "horrible" thing was put in the game. Personally, I see video games as just that, games. I know the difference between reality and playing it on the screen. Unfortunately, everyone's different and sometimes take their virtual life too seriously and let it spill over into the real world. We spend the whole game killing virtual characters, and just because these one's don't have a gun means it's offensive? I just enjoyed the opportunity to have a virtual duckhunt

Here is what gets me. That airport scene depicts an AMERICAN SOLDIER willing to kill hundreds of innocent civilians all in the name of infiltration and getting thier man. NO AMERICAN SOLDIER WOULD EVER BE ALLOWED TO COMMIT SUCH AN ATROCITY AS THIS JUST TO GET THEIR MAN!
For Activision to allow this message of ...... THE ENDS JUSTIFY THE MEANS is what AMERICA is all about is absolutely insane and unjust!!
This is not Mario throwing a fireball. This is a very graphical game. This game has a real atmosphere to it. It gave me the creeps when I first saw the airport scene. It felt VERY COLD and VERY POWERFUL in the message it was sending.
Look. Maybe if this scene would have just played out by itself like a movie, instead of actually letting the player kill innocent civilians then this would have been in good taste IF there was no american soldier involved, just all terrorists. I could have even lived playing AS a terrorist because I know that I myself am not one and that I was just playing a part. But I can understand why alot of people wouldnt even want this. Why? Because there are alot of people out there that are looking for confidence to do this sort of thing in real life and this scene could certainly give them all the encourangement they need to do so. Young children WILL get a hold of this and they are VERY IMPRESSIONABLE.
Again I must say, to put in that scene that an american soldier would kill innocent civilians to get their man is very dangerous, very unrespectful to our forces, and not very responsible. In my opinion, this is just very bad taste.
Listen. Games are not just for kids and I, being an old timer gamer, know this. Alot of the people here in america who thinks games are just for kids are starting to realize this too. However as games mature so do the people who make it need to mature. They need to be responsible for what they make and how they present it.
Movies and music are held responsible for what they do and if the gaming industry ever truly wants to grow up they will have to be as well. The gaming industry is on notice now. No longer can you make what you want and hide behind the wall of ...........It is just a game.
Tell that stuff to the guys who make RAPE VIDEO GAMES. Im sure they say, DUDE IT IS JUST PIXELS COME ON!
But in the end I guess it is just like a movie in terms of interpretations and storylines of what they feel thier product should be. But if nothing more comes of this it should be said this was of EXTREMELY BAD TASTE.
End of Line.

Well said Adam, and while this scene does make me feel uncomfortable, which I believe was their intention, I understand why it is there. Other forms of media do this sort of thing all the time, and things that are far worse. So there is no reason why a game should not be able to use the same artistic methods. Anyway good luck taking on fox, but its not like they would ever admit you have valid points. but if anyone can take them on you've got the best shot.
PSfortheWin
I wonder if he is going to explain why it is okay for him to overreact to a viral video and pull things out of his ass but then to condemn people who overreact about this level.
