Microsoft Bans Up To 1 Million Modded Xbox 360s?

Xbox 360

Last week, Microsoft revealed it was ramping up its efforts to crackdown on Xbox 360 modders by issuing widespread console bans. Today, The Guardian reports that somewhere between 600,000 and 1 million consoles have been banned so far.

Microsoft had previously said that a “small percentage” of 360 users have been affected by the bans, but without any actual numbers, it was hard to really grasp just how significant the screw tightening really was. These new figures also reveal just how expansive the modding community truly is, even though it only identifies the users that have been caught.

Clearly, Microsoft is going to have a very difficult time ever stopping modders entirely, but obviously it’s a fight that the company is more than willing to continue waging for the foreseeable future.

i actually have a jtagged console, that i host mw2(modern warfare 2) lobbies with. i get banned with in a few hours of hosting all the time. microsoft loves me. and when i get banned i buy expensive kv(keyvaults) to unban and start hosting again. so i dont care if i get banned, ill just un ban my self in no time. a plus with a modded xbox 360 is that you can rent games from blockbuster, burn em to your hdd and play without the disc.
    but anyways.

If there is any modding in xbox 360 or ps3. It would be Microsoft and Sony that will be modding in there consoles thats it.

Like I said again if Sony or Microsoft catches any one with a modded console, they will push a switch
'make your console a very expensive brick!

I commend the effort MS has taken to go after and stop piracy.

I also will commend that they are putting to use things they learned against spyware, malware, and their ilk.

I appreciate Microsoft putting spyware in "My X-box 360"

PS - I have an unmodded 360, so the banning has no effect on me. Just not a fan of spyware on anything I own.

That is not a wise idea to modd any console.
Sony and microsoft would make your console a very expensive paper whieght!
I read rumors that they can do that to put a stop on people who modd their consoles.

That may lead 360 owners to the P.C. or the PS3. No I am not trying to start any flame wars!

For those who have been banned. you can become unbanned by Installing Infectus on your xbox 360.
Pirates should continue to buy burned games at lower prices. also the person who you paid to mod your xbox should also be willing to fix the Ban with Infectus for 10 dollars, at least thats what my guy here in New York charges me.

Bludcrimson are you daft? you must be. Not everyone can afford $60 $70 here and there.
Move out of your parents house and ask yourself that question.

The whole purpose of a modded system is to be able to back up games you have purchased.
Doing this will keep the games in perfect condition.

Unfortunately people can take advantage on the situation and pirate the software using obsolete technology AKA DVD and DL discs like the xbox360 has. Look's like being first on the market was a bad idea..... how many pirates are there for PlayStation 3? a big fat 0 and the same goes with a modification for the system.
You will never stop pirates and piracy, it's like saying you can stop crime or people stop world hunger.
If a company was smart they would invent a new tech to store the software to secure it like Nintendo did with the gamecube and Sony and the ps3.

Modding a console for backup purposes is legal to do because u have purchased the product.
Having a backup of the game you have purchased is legal also.
Microsoft can bann whoever they want for disobeying the terms and agreement for xbox live.

This is a touchy subject as I had a modded xbox back in college. I did it because I wanted to customize my xbox and tinker with its inside components, geek guilty, but I did not do this with the 360. Seems like a really stupid way to void a free RROD backup, (I've been given a new(not refurbished) system after my second RROD). I modded my xbox for features I wanted like emulators, music and video players but really the 360 has its act together that I'm fine with stock lol. Really though you should be able to do what you want with the system you bought, excluding ripping off the developers though, wtf.

Wow, this always reminds me of all the times ppl are banned from MMO's because they where cheating or not following the rules. Thing is with a modded 360 you have to rebuy a new system.

Really how many times have you had a disc go bad on someone that really needs a person to have to make a copy. The game you get does have a warenty that if the game does have a problem within the first 90 days you can send it in to get a replacement. But if a person is so bad at taking care of their disks or anything else that they have, then maybe they should learn to take better care of their property so that they wont need a Copy of what they paid for.

The thing is if you want to play on a service supplied by a company and you link your hardware to that service, you ether play by the companies rules or you dont get to have fun using the service, its that simple.

Just wait till later when more and more games are piped to games servers where we will not be downloading anything and the games will be streaming from game servers, then the pirates will complain that they have to pay from that point on. The more and more the pirates steal the games, the more and more the developers will move there games to systems that will show better returns on profitability....like with onlive or other new online games services.

This was bound to happen. I get the argument that people want to play back up copies of old games. The issue with that is, you've already voided the warranty when you open it in the first place and make those mods to the chips. People need to learn that modding, while enticing, isn't worth the consequence of having to spend more money to get a brand new system when it's been banned.

I don't know about anyone here, but I'll be damned if I'm just gonna fork up the money to go buy a new system, even a used one at that. If I invest my hard earned money into a game console, I'm not gonna ruin my investment, by cracking it open and potentially screwing something up, just to play games early. There's something about the quality of my experience that I just can't disrupt. I'm not THAT eager to play a game, that I just HAVE to download and burn it.

Quality to me is worth the price. If I like something I'm gonna invest in it and enjoy money well spent. We all gotta eat, as many would say. When you cut into hard earned money that devs invest in a vision for an awesome game, they then get fired or laid off due to lost profit from people not buying what they worked long hours to produce.

Some people thrive on just not paying for something they feel they've already paid initial price for. If only they would stop closing their mind and think about the people who make the games for us all.

Second rate gaming is NOT the way to go!

yeah, they're doing mass banning so that they can force people to buy new xbox in the holiday season. They're even banning xboxes that aren't even modded. Pretty cheesy tactic by the M$ just to rack up sales. But then again, since when did M$ never use underhanded tactics just to get ahead the competition. M$ is counting on the stupidity of those 1 million banned xbox owners to buy their faulty console again.

Why are people calling this just a greedy corporate move from Microsoft? These people were pirating their games and the games of their business partners and they were violating the terms of service agreement that they had signed. Microsoft had every right and responsibility to do this and they did it. Sure Sony might get a slight sales boost if all the modders just jump over to their system but does Sony really want those people modding their systems and pirating their games and the games of others? Sure Microsoft might lose a few million now but they are getting rid of the hackers who ruin the experience for their other customers and the pirates who ruin the business of their partners. And lets be honest does Microsoft really need the tiny amount of money they get from these guys live subscriptions? It is probably going to be a fraction of a percent of their actual profit so who cares?

Microsoft is stupid lol dont get me wrong i have both systems but games will be better on PS3 cuz of Blue-ray. I already have alot of ppl telling me they are switching to PS3. Maybe if M$ would stop trying to squeeze all they can get from their fans ppl wouldnt do it.

The big picture among this smokescreen is that they have the ability to invade your privacy w/o you knowing and give you very little to no chance to resolve the issue. They know what you do to your 360 and what you play. All you people with pr0n and Hannah Montana videos on your 360 better run, Chris Hanson is on his way.
