Morning Hangover #71 -- Andrew Looks For Feedback, Patrick Has TV Envy

Love it or hate it, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is here and everyone is playing it. Obviously, the game's going to be a major point of discussion on this week's episode of Feedback, but it won't be the only thing we're talking about. As per usual, in one segement, we give you guys the power to control Feedback. If you have a question for the Feedback crew, drop in it the comments. I'll be reading.

BONUS! Questions that aren't answered on Feedback are also eligible to be answered in Andrew Pfister's new weekly mailbag special (it runs every Friday), Reply To All. If you aren't picked for Feedback, there's always a chance Andrew will pick up the other good ones for Reply to All.

Reminder: All questions require readers to have an avatar associated with their profile!

There is this big buzz on the internet, and from comments already mentioned here, about how it seems like the "inevitability" of consoles transitioning in the next few years from disk to digital. I am wondering if the game industry will suffer for this because of many gamers out there who either are primarily console gamers or gamers who don't use any sort of digital downloads of games might not decide to make that transition. So to rephrase, will the game industry lose a lot of customers and fan base if or when they make gaming only digital or do you think games on disks will never go away.

P.S. - In my opinion, going completely digital would be a big mistake for consoles because of the fact that you have to make sure you have plenty of space on the system's hard-drive, and if you have no space available you would have to delete them in order to make room for new games, and who knows if you can re-download the deleted game in the future should you wish to replay. What do you think would be the solution then to this dilemma?

Do you think that it was a little disrespectful infinity ward release a AAA title right before Remembrance Day? Instead of gamer's paying respects to war veterans, they are inside pretending to be war heroes in Modern Warfare 2.

What do you think of the comments made by Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford regarding Valve's "fanboyism" towards the Xbox 360? To me, this comment seems to reflect a significant level of detachment between the bean counter at the top and the reality at market, as well as a lack of understanding of even the fundamentals of the industry in which his company exists. Is this attitude, and even ignorance, representative of "the management" at all video game publishers/developers or are the Randy Pitchfords of the world in the minority?

To expound on my point further without muddling the question: I think that the comments made by Mr. Pitchford sound like the rantings of a fanboy trying to discredit a reviewer ("He just hates PS3 so don't listen to him", I'm sure you all are quite familiar with that type of nonsense). Valve, as a developer, has no obligation to make games for all platforms. It is a financial decision based on cost-benefit analysis by Valve's own bean counters whether they want to invest in development for other platforms. They've always primarily been a PC developer, which makes the transition to the Xbox (I assume) easier. This lack of connect between what Mr. Pitchford says and reality indicates that it's likely he either does not understand or hopes his audience does not understand how things work. Further, why on earth would he have a vendetta against Valve? Were it not for Steam, I would never have purchased his company's game.

With big new games like uncharted 2 and modern warfare 2 offering 3 completely different modes that could each easily be stand alone games for the same price as a game that may be short with only one mode, do you predict a change in the pricing model for game? will game prices start to reflect the quality and quantity of what you get in the package?

Should Infinity Ward make another Call of Duty game, and if you guys think they do, should it follow int he footsteps of the Modern War theme or should they try something completely different?

With so many of the most popular games lately being sequel after sequel after sequel (MW2, AC2, L4D2, ME2, etc etc), what do you think the video game industry should be doing to encourage the creation of more original, innovative new games to the gaming community? With the big publishers forcing developers to stick with proven cash-cow franchises instead of taking a chance on creating something fresh and new (yeah it is a big-dollar business I know), it seems like indie developers are becoming one of the last sources for anything creative and original any more.

Do you think the sales figures for Assassin's Creed II and Left 4 Dead 2 will be significantly lower as a result of this week's release of Modern Warfare 2? Say if ACII and L4D2 were released without this beast of a game being released. Would these games sell better or about the same?

Also, which do you think will "win" in terms of sales, quality, etc: ACII or L4D2?

Can we use Dragon Age: Origins to contrast how BioWare is going to handle Star Wars: The Old Republic? AND is this a good or bad indication of what we can expect?

You guys and gals need to stop crying about game delays. The fact that so many games have been pushed into 2010 is a very good thing. Aren t you getting exactly what you ve been asking developers to do for years? Good games spread throughout the entire year. There are enough games coming out each year to have a few great games come out every month. Do you think that game developers will see that they can have a successful game at any time of the year and be more inclined to spread out their releases? I think it would be smarter to sell a game earlier in the year and during the holiday season sell at a lower price.

Video Game Violence and kids. It always seems to be some kind of major point of interest in the United States (and now oddly Australia) but not so much in other places in the world like Canada. Why is it such a big deal in the States? And shouldn't parents be using CAPSLOCK to YELL about SOMETHING else BESIDES what GAMES are VIOLENT?

Nintendo is claiming that "The New Super Mario Bros" on the Wii will become bigger then Modern Warfare 2 itself. Given that Nintendo already has a huge console base out there full of casual gamers, how will this bet go into determining whether there is a bigger Hardcore playerbase or a casual playerbase?
Also, thanks to Valve, I'm addicted to Torchlight.

With the transfer over to complete digital distribution looming over us within the next few years, it seems as though we are coming to a point where video game consoles are starting to lose the qualities that made them an independent form of media (and I'm not saying this is a bad thing). If consoles were to completely go diskless then do you see a future for consoles in the next 10 to 20 years, or could they transition back into PCs, but with independent operating systems? Could we see companies like Sony and Nintendo making PCs with their own operating systems, opposed to the traditional new video game console.

Some recent controversy I have seen lately is over the complete lack of DRM (or any feature to protect against piracy) on Borderlands, to the point where you can pirate the game and still play online just as if you have bought it. Often times a game will have DRM and will be an inconvenience for people who bought the game legitimately, while only slightly delaying a release of a cracked version (which will typically be free of DRM hassle after being cracked); On the other hand, the complete lack of an anti-piracy feature might encourage people to simply steal the game.

My question is: Do you feel that the lack of an anti-piracy feature on a game helps or harms the sale of a game? And to what extent?

Modern Warfare 2 top of its class.. Uncharted 2 top of its class... Dragon age top of its class...

Where do game developers go from here what is "Outside of the box anymore?"

Do you feel like video game reviews are getting pointless? According to comment sections, it would seem that a lot of gamers have already made up their mind that X game is either the greatest game or the dumbest thing on Earth. I know it's probably a vocal minority, but do you think anybody was really on the edge about a game like Modern Warfare 2 and your review helped make the sale?
