Modern Warfare 2 Prestige Edition Not For PC

Welcome to Morning Hangover -- an excellent way to start your day with the crew at TheFeed...no matter what you're recovering from. Every morning you'll hear musings from our editors and have the chance to share your thoughts on what's going on in the gaming world.

The fact that Activision isn’t “overly concerned” about the frustrations expressed by gamers over the lack of dedicated servers in the PC version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is hardly surprising. And while irate PC gamers could probably argue on and on about Infinity Ward’s “abandonment of the community of gamers that made it the developer it is today” and all of that, I’m more interested in finding out just how dedicated gamers are to dedicated servers.

So hardcore PC gamers, why do you think IW decided to favor a more console-ish infrastructure for MW2’s multiplayer? (And, “Because they’re a bunch of back-stabbing jerks!” isn’t an acceptable response.) Is a dedicated server more important to you than gameplay, design, graphics, etc.? Are you going to play Battlefield: Bad Company 2 simply because it offers dedicated servers, even though you might have loved Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and would have preferred playing MW2, if not for the lack of dedicated servers? What will hardcore PC gamers do if more and more developers take a book out of IW's multiplayer playbook? Stop playing multiplayer games?

The other question I’m interested in finding out about is this: For those PC gamers who are still playing COD4 on PC, and consider it one of the best games of the generation, are you seriously going to avoid playing what will undoubtedly be the biggest multiplayer game of the year (next to Left 4 Dead 2)? Do you detest matchmaking so much that you’re willing to pass up playing the juggernaut of a game that MW2 most likely will be? If so, I totally respect that, and I would love to hear what you plan on playing while millions of gamers are enjoying MW2.

TheFeed gang wants your thoughts on gaming, tech, PhD's in spaceship repair, and more. Let everyone know what you're thinking and chat it up with your fellow readers. Leave comments on anything and everything that's on your (gaming/tech/nerd) mind!

Let me start of by saying; if I wanted to play a console shooter, I d play on a console.

But according to IW the PC version is its own build after all, it has mouse support .

Dedicated servers are the gameplay for the PC. Will I buy it? I don t have a pre-order anymore and I have no interest in the MP side anymore.

Aside from all the potential hosting problems that IW is dumping on the consumer, (don t know about you I have a bandwidth cap , it s a good size but with streaming shows, 2 computers, mobile devices and console I come close, how much would this game add. Oh and the fact that hosting breaches my contract, granted getting locked out most likely wouldn t happen but that s not the point and I love IW s comment that ISP s will have to deal with it .) They have removed everything that makes PC gaming so great. It s not just the mods and controls and ability to play to your style albeit they are right up there if not the most important thing, I still smile when thinking of low grav insta-gib bathroom map. It s also the scrolling thru that daunting and treacherous list of servers, its like finding a home. You step in, look around, and get a feel for the place if you don t like it you find another. When you do find one you get to know the people there, you join there clan build rapport. You play with a group consisting of the same people you learn who s good at what and you adapt and one day a dozen or so people that have never meet work as one and it s a wonderful thing. You can t do that with 9 random people, you can t do it without control of your server and you certainly can't do it with all the carp that comes over Live.

IW you have alienated and entire community of gamers, or was it Activision? This is a console port whether it s admitted or not and you should be ashamed. But what do you care you made a console game that will sell well on the console anything from the PC is just a bonus.
    (explicative's IW explicative's)

With all this still doesn t mean I won t get it at some point there is still the SP campaign that I would like to play, Ill just wait till the price drops A LOT.... I can wait

well i am a PC gamer as well as own a 360 and ps3, this fiasco IW and Activision have pulled can not be overlooked. honestly will the petition really hurt this game no, but the reason people are signing it (including myself) is so they can see that this is going to hurt a community of gamers because casual pc gamers cant play it. that is just a terrible excuse.

honestly they didnt work on a pc version at all there are only 3 differences from this version and the consoles.

    1. in game text chat
    2. graphic setings
    3. and ability to use mouse and keyboard

it may be just me but those are all features addressed within the first month of development. lets call it what it really is they just wanted to give the PC crowd a console port. has nothing to do with fighting piracy, cheaters, and all the other lame excuses they are spewing out. they figured they could get away with it so why not, thats the reason why there was no demo or online beta they knew this would become a fiasco its why when one of the IW guys spilled the beans all hell broke loose.

    @jdiggitty
you have obviously never played on a legit server on a PC if you are using examples of people moving 10 times faster than most and maxed out weapon stats unless you are a hacker yourself just spouting non sense so you can feel better because none of that can be changed unless you know programming and hack the game. oh one more thing advertising revenue??? hahaha you dont know anything the players help fund the community its why its called a community. learn something before you start expressing anger over something you know nothing about.

Why don't you write an even more annoying segment to stab us in the ribs about it again. BF: BC2 will be a better game in general for multiplayer because it has vehicles and thus isn't the same FPS game we've been playing since Counter-Strike

Wow, is this G4's way of telling PC gamers to "STFU you don't have any valid claims"? Apparently, none of you guys play on the PC. I find it quite a double standard that half of the console folks demand Valve make games for the PS3, yet IW is never to blame and can do no wrong. G4's credibility has sunk faster than the Value of Enron's stock when it was found out when they were cooking the books. All the console gamers who have never bothered to play a game on FPS should think before they speak. If you feel like staying ignorant to the way Activision does business, fine by me. But don't demand other people eat crap just because you enjoy it.

I tend to like to compete in PC games, and without dedicated servers, competition play is as good as dead (who would want to play a clan match where the server host gets an advantage?). For regular play, I do not mind matchmaking, but for competition, dedicated servers are, in a way, more important than the gameplay and graphical experiences that IW wanted us to have.

Gameplay - The last MW was way more balanced due to the ability to have dedicated servers and mods (ex. Promod, which got rid of nearly all perks that made things unfair. I'm looking at you Martyrdom.).

Graphics - Most people turn there graphics down as far as possible for competition play to maximize their framerates, so, for the most part, do not matter.

Honestly I was deciding between buying L4D2 and MW2, and the level of disrespect spewed at PC gamers has made my decision for me. Will I still play MW2? Yes, but only the single player, and let's just say no dollars of mine will be sent to Activision/IW.

"So hardcore PC gamers, why do you think IW decided to favor a more console-ish infrastructure for MW2 s multiplayer?"

i would guess to save money by making the console and pc versions more similar. what point are you trying to make? why do you think IW decided to favor a console-ish infrastructure?

"Is a dedicated server more important to you than gameplay, design, graphics, etc.?"

dedicated servers has a huge impact on gameplay. if i know they dont have dedicated servers i know they dont have gameplay that is satisfactory for me.

"Are you going to play Battlefield: Bad Company 2 simply because it offers dedicated servers, even though you might have loved Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and would have preferred playing MW2, if not for the lack of dedicated servers?"

i dont play any game simply because it offers dedicated servers. but a dedicated server is a requirement, i will not spend money to be told who to play with.

"What will hardcore PC gamers do if more and more developers take a book out of IW's multiplayer playbook? Stop playing multiplayer games?"

i would play older games. gameplay is more important then flashy graphics and other gimmicks. the day there is no more good fps's with dedicated servers and strong communities is the day i will abandon first person shooters.

"are you seriously going to avoid playing what will undoubtedly be the biggest multiplayer game of the year (next to Left 4 Dead 2)? Do you detest matchmaking so much that you re willing to pass up playing the juggernaut of a game that MW2 most likely will be?"

i am an adult, i dont have to follow every fad. something being popular isnt enough of a reason for me to spend my money on it. matchmaking destroys gameplay, and makes me utterly unwilling to buy the game, even if Jesus himself came down from heaven to try to sell me the game. God's power is not infinite because even he couldnt convince me to spend my money on a matchmaking fps.

IW will not give two sxits about PC gamers who are "boycotting" this game. It will still break records on consoles.

Hopefully PC gamers will finally crawl back into that hole thay have been living in - their mom's basement.

Is there at least 1 god damn pc gamer on the g4tv staff, that actually played for more then 2 hours on a dedicated server?

And yes I did cancel my preorder of MW2, and yes I will probably be playing Bad Company 2 and MW1...simply because its more fun.

Did you ever heard about server community? plenty of the MW servers that exist today have a website and a forum, most people know eachother...we hafe fun, we laugh, we organize different competitions on the server and more.

I would have loved to play MW2, LOVED but without a dedicated server to play with MY COMMUNITY of people, why bother? to play 9v9 when for the last 2 years I've been playing 15vs15 or more?

Maps are designed for that many people? why? because you get killed faster and have to be more alert? ruins the camping for you?

They just wonted to Focus more on the Consoles because they can make us pay for our map packs if and when the re less them. I feal bad for the PC players. IW slapped them in the face like they are the bastard child of the family even thou there the child that put them on the map. Also what up with you Jake Gaskill!? I may be wrong but you seems like your being a douche. Jake GaskillI says "" I would love to hear what you plan on playing while millions of gamers are enjoying MW2". Rubb it in the face a little more. All well thats my 2cents.

Im really not too interested in this whole debacle as i had no intention of installing this on my PC. I have Arma 2 to satisfy any PC fps need that codmw2 has to offer. That said im getting it for my xbox. Reason why i dont care? Their choice to do this does not mean any other PC game company thats worth a damn will do it too. They know what will happen...

MW2 will be good, but Bad company 2 will destroy this game. Let me know when MW has full destruction and vehicles..

Does the lack of dedicated servers hurt? Yes.
Does this mean I won't buy the game? Yes.
It's not just the lack of dedicated servers, its the utter and thorough lack of respect Activision has shown their PC base.
Add a limit of 9v9, no customization, the switch to an anti-cheat EVEN WORSE than PB and then my favorite:
(taken from an online chat hosted by Best Buy with a couple IW guys)
Moriarte: Ignoring IW.net, is the PC version a direct port of the console version?

Mackey-IW: No, PC has custom stuff like mouse control, text chat in game, and graphics settings.

I can type in game....cool. Thanks IW, thats definitely worth the extra 10 bucks...Oh wait, we already had that!

IW has killed the COD series on the PC. They have stripped the game down to a husk of what is was. The next COD game(if there is one) for the PC will not include mouse support and we will be forced to use autoaim. Way to lose customers IW.

    Nice chart here:

While community mods make games like Unreal Tournament and Half Life legendary games, does Modern Warfare need anything extra to reach this status? I say, no. From what we know so far (assuming you haven't pirated the game yet), it's still everything we loved from the first MW - just bigger, better, and faster.

Faster because it won't take me hours/days/weeks to find a decent server. I like matchmaking, and I'm stoked it's finally coming to the PC. The best option would be to allow for both matchmaking and user supported server selection - but if you can only spend money to develop, test, and produce one (remember they wrote this software for 3 different platforms) method of delivering the best experience possible, I'm so glad they went with the decisions they have.

I think they went with their decision to streamline the game. As far as I know there is no difference between the console versions other than using it on your PC. I have been waiting for the next battlefield game. I would have bought both MW2 and Bad Company 2.

I will buy the game, but with this decision I wont be getting it at release. I'm fine with Dragon Age and Left 4 Dead 2 for the time being. I don't detest matchmaking and features like it, but I'm very casual. I'm not super competitive when I play, I play a game to have fun. I like to find a few servers to play on and that's usually the only servers I join. For CoD4 my favorite server list only has about eight servers. I don't like being thrown into a game of random people. When you find a good server full of good players it makes the game so much more enjoyable. Also, what about Clan servers? I played Halo 3 for a while and that was frustrating to get a good practice in. A good server is almost like a home for your gaming.I'm going to miss dedicated servers and I hope IW does something great and different with their matchmaking.
