Multi-console Owners Favoring PS3 Over Xbox 360 For Major Sequels?

Let’s say you own a copy of either Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and/or Assassin’s Creed on either the PlayStation 3 and/or the Xbox 360. With the impeding releases of highly anticipated sequels to both titles, it appears that you have a rather difficult decision to make, namely: Which version of said sequel are you going to buy?

The reason I ask is that OTX’s GamePlan Insights recently told Gamasutra that a surprising percentage of gamers who purchased COD4 and/or AC for the Xbox 360 have said they plan to buy PS3 versions of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and/or Assassin's Creed II, respectively. Fifteen-percent of gamers who own a 360 copy of AC said they will be picking up a PS3 copy of its sequel, while just 7 percent who own a PS3 copy plan to buy the sequel for the 360.

OTX didn’t provide any figures with regards to Modern Warfare 2, but OTX said the percentages were similar to those for ACII. In light of this data, analyst Nick Williams believes, “The PS3 seems poised to shift the ratio of Xbox 360 to PS3 sales for most major multi-platform releases in its favor among dual owners.”

The fact that there are more PS3’s in living rooms now compared to when the first installments in these franchises were released might account for the MW2 shift, given the game’s significant multiplayer component. But Assassin’s Creed II is single-player only, so what could be causing so many gamers to choose the PS3 version over the 360 version?

It might very well be that gamers who didn’t want to shell out the cash for a PS3 two years ago decided to pick up a 360, and then when AC and COD4 came out, those were two massive games, so they bought them. But now, thanks to the price drop, those people who originally wanted a PS3 have been able to buy one, and buying games for your shiny new system is a commonly held attitude.

From a more industry-based perspective, the shift could be attributed to the way ACII was presented at this year’s E3, and the way the game has/will be marketed. During E3, Ubisoft used Microsoft’s press conference to show off Splinter Cell: Conviction, while it used Sony's press conference to showcase ACII. It’s hard to say exactly what kind of impact this had on gamers’ perceptions of ACII, it would be unwise to think it hasn’t influenced some percentage of gamers who paid close attention to the biggest gaming event of the year. Also, as GamesIndustry.biz reports, Ubisoft has revealed that it made a marketing deal with Sony earlier this year to have television ads for ACII feature only the PlayStation 3 logo. Given the surge in the number of PS3’s flying off store shelves these days, I'd say it's a pretty safe bet that we'll be seeing more and more ads for multi-platform games flashing the PS3 logo at the end of them moving forward.

Ultimately though, with the hard data concerning those 15 percent and 7 percent of gamers that OTX’s research highlights, it’s hard to say just how significant or widespread this shift from one console version of a game to another really is. However, if it is happening as frequently as this data suggests, then perhaps we’ll be finding out much more about it very soon.

What’s your take on all of this? Are you one of those people who are picking up a PS3 version of one of these games over the 360 version? Why the change? And if you can refrain from dragging this discussion into mindless fanboy-crazed territory, you’ll get 107 gold stars.

I'll be getting both for the PS3, mainly because my 360 died on me at the beginning of this year, right around the time I got my PS3.

If my 360 hadn't died, then I don't know. I'd probably still get them for the PS3, only because it's the newer of my systems.

I have both. I play pretty much PS3 exclusives on my PS3 (Uncharted 2). Otherwise I buy them for Xbox 360, because the online community is better fleshed out, more people use mics, and my Gamerscore. PS3 Network is getting better, but it is a far way off from Xbox Live.

I own both....but multiplayer games ...have to go with XBOX Live. I also like when the little Achievements pop up. Sounds silly, I know. I got the PS3 for their exclusives....the few good ones that I like. :-)

when it comes down to shooters i usually get them on the pc, not that i have anything against shooters on consoles i just perfer them on the pc because i like using a mouse/keyboard more over a controller for shooters, controllers get the job done but mouse/keyboard oes it better imo

as for multiplats on 360 and ps3, at first i use to buy all my multiplats on the 360 but as of late im spending more on ps3 multiplats, and ill be getting mw2 for both consoles and assasins creed 2 on the.

I own both 360 and PS3 and I buy all my mutiplatform games on the PS3. I don't really know why, maybe it's just because I'm more used to Sony and their products have always worked for me.

I mostly use my 360 for exclusives and buy everything else on the PS3. I'm becoming a little bit of a trophy whore. I hate myself for it.

    Congratulations JayHyl17

I think you hit the nail on the head. MS is a multi billion dollar company and they, like:

    the phome company
    the oil company
    the hydro company
    the cable/satellite company

    all charge for services.

I would love to get all the aforementioned services for free, but as adults we know ppl have to get paid.

Just a thought, but if Sony charged for online service..........would they have lost $3,000,000,000 last year?

Better still............would 18,000 ppl still have their jobs?

There are a number of reasons I only buy multi-console games for Xbox 360. Number 1, I have more friends on Xbox Live. Number 2, I like the Xbox format better (achievements for every game, easier to jump into a multiplayer game, and party chat). Number 3, I like the Xbox 360 controller better than the PS3 controller. Finally, number 4 could be different for everyone, too, but I ve been playing games like Resistance and Killzone 2 online and I m finding out that like no one has headsets. I get tired of talking to myself in these games. There is no way to coordinate. I know there is a lot of trash talking in games like Halo and Gears of War but at least I can communicate a majority of the time with my teammates. With all that said, I still love my PS3 and I think buying one is well worth it just for the exclusives.

I'll just stay PS3 for now, I have a funny feeling that Microsoft is going to change their system next year so I'll wait for that and see how it goes, after 2 rrods I couldn't stop myself from smashing the next one and I heard it was hard to get that covered under warranty.

I wish all my friends had PS3, ONLINE IS FREAKING FREE! Microsoft has you pay a 50 dollar fee. They are a multi billion dollar company, i think they could give xbox live for free. PLUS, PS3's rarley break down unlike 360's

i had to send mine in cuz of the red rings. thats wack.

If the PS3 controller were more comfortable to use, then maybe I might use my PS3 more.

i have both a 360 and ps3. personally i have forgotten about the 360 for a few reasons, i was tired of running a 50 foot Ethernet cable across my house just so i dont have to pay an extra 100 dollars for a wireless adapter, especially after paying 60 dollars a year just to play. thats a huge difference than getting all that free with the ps3. second there are way to many stupid annoying kids playing on xbl, there aren't nearly as many on psn. and third i love not worrying that my ps3 is going to die, or eat my games, i have bought 3 360s since they have been released and two of them had the rrod. third i love not worrying about running out of batteries when playing games, i just like how the ps3 includes everything that ms wants u to pay extra for such as rechargeable batteries, wireless adapter, and paying for access to xbl. now that the ps3 is only 299 its very easy to see that the ps3 is a better value. i will be buying mw2 and ac2 for my ps3 and keep my 360 for exclusives. i love both of the systems my ps3 has just never let me down.

I'm going to have all of the majot platforms when Christmas comes (I just need a PS3), and I'll be officially unbiased.
My opinion of the Console Wars? It's pointless. If a console fits your needs as a gamer then that should be the end of it. Don't be like RRoDisBack and troll ON EVERY FREAKIN' POST!
As a 360 owner who wants a PS3, I think that the PS3 is catching up and I'm excited to get one. At the same time, the 360 is still a great platform and most of my friends play on the 360.
However, the Metal Gear fan inside me is screaming "screw the 360! PS3 owns!" Luckily I just remind myself that MGS: Rising is coming to the 360.

Whenever I can get the game for either console, I get the 360 version. Mainly for xbl it is hands down a better multiplayer system right now.
