Multi-console Owners Favoring PS3 Over Xbox 360 For Major Sequels?

Let’s say you own a copy of either Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and/or Assassin’s Creed on either the PlayStation 3 and/or the Xbox 360. With the impeding releases of highly anticipated sequels to both titles, it appears that you have a rather difficult decision to make, namely: Which version of said sequel are you going to buy?

The reason I ask is that OTX’s GamePlan Insights recently told Gamasutra that a surprising percentage of gamers who purchased COD4 and/or AC for the Xbox 360 have said they plan to buy PS3 versions of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and/or Assassin's Creed II, respectively. Fifteen-percent of gamers who own a 360 copy of AC said they will be picking up a PS3 copy of its sequel, while just 7 percent who own a PS3 copy plan to buy the sequel for the 360.

OTX didn’t provide any figures with regards to Modern Warfare 2, but OTX said the percentages were similar to those for ACII. In light of this data, analyst Nick Williams believes, “The PS3 seems poised to shift the ratio of Xbox 360 to PS3 sales for most major multi-platform releases in its favor among dual owners.”

The fact that there are more PS3’s in living rooms now compared to when the first installments in these franchises were released might account for the MW2 shift, given the game’s significant multiplayer component. But Assassin’s Creed II is single-player only, so what could be causing so many gamers to choose the PS3 version over the 360 version?

It might very well be that gamers who didn’t want to shell out the cash for a PS3 two years ago decided to pick up a 360, and then when AC and COD4 came out, those were two massive games, so they bought them. But now, thanks to the price drop, those people who originally wanted a PS3 have been able to buy one, and buying games for your shiny new system is a commonly held attitude.

From a more industry-based perspective, the shift could be attributed to the way ACII was presented at this year’s E3, and the way the game has/will be marketed. During E3, Ubisoft used Microsoft’s press conference to show off Splinter Cell: Conviction, while it used Sony's press conference to showcase ACII. It’s hard to say exactly what kind of impact this had on gamers’ perceptions of ACII, it would be unwise to think it hasn’t influenced some percentage of gamers who paid close attention to the biggest gaming event of the year. Also, as GamesIndustry.biz reports, Ubisoft has revealed that it made a marketing deal with Sony earlier this year to have television ads for ACII feature only the PlayStation 3 logo. Given the surge in the number of PS3’s flying off store shelves these days, I'd say it's a pretty safe bet that we'll be seeing more and more ads for multi-platform games flashing the PS3 logo at the end of them moving forward.

Ultimately though, with the hard data concerning those 15 percent and 7 percent of gamers that OTX’s research highlights, it’s hard to say just how significant or widespread this shift from one console version of a game to another really is. However, if it is happening as frequently as this data suggests, then perhaps we’ll be finding out much more about it very soon.

What’s your take on all of this? Are you one of those people who are picking up a PS3 version of one of these games over the 360 version? Why the change? And if you can refrain from dragging this discussion into mindless fanboy-crazed territory, you’ll get 107 gold stars.

    I have both systems.

And I'll say that I have more fun using my 360 playing on-line then on the PS3.

I played Killzone 2 , Uncharted 2, Resistance (1,2) online and I loved the online for a while but got bored after a few months of playing the game. The online experience although is Free is lacking some key features that make it boring. Plus I hated the fact that a quite number of people are unsporting during online and I can't do nothing about it.

I bought Batman: AA for the PS3 because of the Joker maps. Sure playing as the Joker was cool but the whole time I wished it was on the 360. Reasons: controller and achievements.

PC users get the SHAFT in Modern Warfare 2 and games in general. Sure you heard about it. Sure, most games are all about the XBOX and the PS3. Sure in MW2 most of the sales will be the infamous XBOX and PS3 and the PC sales are a nonfactor to most companies. However, there is a thriving community and set of PC dedicated users and gamers out there. As I type this out, I realize I am doing it on... a PC! You might even be reading this on a... a PC!

    WE PC-Gamers do live.

The only reason why i keep my Xbox is for Mass Effect 2. Other than that it will continue to collect dust until it comes out.

Interesting, but not surprised. I own the x-box 360 because of Mass Affect and I bought the PS3 because of Metal Gear Solid Guns of the Patriots.

I have love for both of the consoles.
I have to pick up Halo ODST, I hope I spelled that right!

Good grief, should have re-read my post before posting it...

I own every console on the market as well as a gaming PC and while with single player games I tend to get games for what ever console I can get the cheapest (unless it's an FPS or RTS in which case a mouse and keyboard are INFINITELY more accurate than controllers so they default to the PC) used copy on, multiplayer games are strictly on the PS3 or PC.

I've been gaming online since way back when with Quake II on a 56k connection and all of sudden when the 360 came out I was expected to pay for a service that I had already been using for years at no cost? Are you kidding me? I seriously have no idea how on earth LIVE gold ever took off with anyone who had ever owned a PC. I can understand console gamers who never owned a dreamcast and didn't know they were paying for something they could get for free, but then the PS3 launched and it had free online gaming as well. So there's really no excuse.

The dreamcast was free, the ps2 was free, the ps3 was free, the PC has always been free, and yet people actually pay for LIVE? Not this costumer.

I'll be picking up both Modern Warfare 2 and Assassins Creed 2 for the XBOX 360. I only use my PS3 for exclusives like Ratchet & Clank and Infamous.

Well, with the 360 you pay for quality.

Fun indie and Arcade games- Like Castle Crashers,Braid,Shadow Complex,Splosion Man

This isn't something you pay for but Achievements. If my mind corrects me but the PS3 wasn't launched with Trophys. They saw how the achievements gave the gamer a sense of accoplishment they just had to copy it

Games on Demand-GTA IV,L4D,Battlefield Bad Company.and Many more
Last time I turned om PS3 there was burnout Paradise and something else.I have 160 gb harddrive space with nothing to fill it with.

Xbox Live is more user friendly than the PSN.
Most consoles come with a mic. Unlike the PS3.

    @Asudevil2

For me, its just the way the triggers and bumpers feel on the 360 compared to the L1/R1/L2/R2. It really only matters to me on shooters as I feel I have more control switching between Iron site and from-the-hip shooting. Everything else feels just fine on both controllers. Its just a personal prefernce.

Funny you should mention that because my New PS3 slim just ate one of my Blu-Ray disc and It wouldn't come out for nothin'. Was gonna try out MW2 on it but, I had to send it in. I did have a Xbox 360 tray that was trouble for me but was fine after I cleaned it with some alcohol and a q-tip. Guess I'll be playing MW2 on the 360 till I get the PS3 back. Its nice to have both systems just for these kind of problems.

I love both systems, and the reason I buy for one system or another is that I have more friends online on XBL than PS3, so PS3 goes for solo games and multiplayer to XB.
