Let’s say you own a copy of either Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and/or Assassin’s Creed on either the PlayStation 3 and/or the Xbox 360. With the impeding releases of highly anticipated sequels to both titles, it appears that you have a rather difficult decision to make, namely: Which version of said sequel are you going to buy?
The reason I ask is that OTX’s GamePlan Insights recently told Gamasutra that a surprising percentage of gamers who purchased COD4 and/or AC for the Xbox 360 have said they plan to buy PS3 versions of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and/or Assassin's Creed II, respectively. Fifteen-percent of gamers who own a 360 copy of AC said they will be picking up a PS3 copy of its sequel, while just 7 percent who own a PS3 copy plan to buy the sequel for the 360.
OTX didn’t provide any figures with regards to Modern Warfare 2, but OTX said the percentages were similar to those for ACII. In light of this data, analyst Nick Williams believes, “The PS3 seems poised to shift the ratio of Xbox 360 to PS3 sales for most major multi-platform releases in its favor among dual owners.”
The fact that there are more PS3’s in living rooms now compared to when the first installments in these franchises were released might account for the MW2 shift, given the game’s significant multiplayer component. But Assassin’s Creed II is single-player only, so what could be causing so many gamers to choose the PS3 version over the 360 version?
It might very well be that gamers who didn’t want to shell out the cash for a PS3 two years ago decided to pick up a 360, and then when AC and COD4 came out, those were two massive games, so they bought them. But now, thanks to the price drop, those people who originally wanted a PS3 have been able to buy one, and buying games for your shiny new system is a commonly held attitude.
From a more industry-based perspective, the shift could be attributed to the way ACII was presented at this year’s E3, and the way the game has/will be marketed. During E3, Ubisoft used Microsoft’s press conference to show off Splinter Cell: Conviction, while it used Sony's press conference to showcase ACII. It’s hard to say exactly what kind of impact this had on gamers’ perceptions of ACII, it would be unwise to think it hasn’t influenced some percentage of gamers who paid close attention to the biggest gaming event of the year. Also, as GamesIndustry.biz reports, Ubisoft has revealed that it made a marketing deal with Sony earlier this year to have television ads for ACII feature only the PlayStation 3 logo. Given the surge in the number of PS3’s flying off store shelves these days, I'd say it's a pretty safe bet that we'll be seeing more and more ads for multi-platform games flashing the PS3 logo at the end of them moving forward.
Ultimately though, with the hard data concerning those 15 percent and 7 percent of gamers that OTX’s research highlights, it’s hard to say just how significant or widespread this shift from one console version of a game to another really is. However, if it is happening as frequently as this data suggests, then perhaps we’ll be finding out much more about it very soon.
What’s your take on all of this? Are you one of those people who are picking up a PS3 version of one of these games over the 360 version? Why the change? And if you can refrain from dragging this discussion into mindless fanboy-crazed territory, you’ll get 107 gold stars.

First of all, I can't wait for both of these games! 10/10 for sure on both! I pre-ordered them both on 360 and I own the others on 360. My Xbox did die a couple of days, so I have to go buy a new one. I've only really let my PS3 shine online with Uncharted 2, and I really liked it. Most of my friends are on Xbox Live or both, so I usually go for 360 games unless it is a PS3 exclusive. I like the controller a lot better. And I like the achievements better than the trophies. I do like the setup of the Xbox a lot better than the PS3. And I like Live a lot more than PSN. That's not to say that PSN is bad, it works well and it is free. And the PS3 is a really good console - plus it plays Blu-rays! Bottom line: Join your friends online and be grateful that Sony and Microsoft bash heads. As a result we all get awesome games and cheaper console prices. This generation really has some GREAT games! I just hope Epic Games can pull their heads out and make Gears of War 3 with NO LAG!

i like my FPS on the 360. I own few on the ps3..killzone 2 and such. Online MP just feals better for me on the 360.(although it sucks having to pay $50 a year) however i enjoy it. Im saving my ps3 for a mmo machine lol.. DC universe online and hopefully a EQOA or EQ...for PS3

Add me to the list of X....... Xbox owners.. I made the right choice and switched to the better system with FREE online and now I don't hold a vcr in my hand for a controller.... oh the nice fell of the dual shock 3 :)

You know, I'm actually kind of impressed. Very few people have turned this into a mudslinging contest, and are handling this like a serious question and are giving serious well though out answers. I say bravo to all of us for keeping this mostly civil.

I like my PS3! So I'll be supporting that all the way. 360 isn't too bad though...
McKinstry420
I have both systems but buy everything for my PS3. I haven't even turned on my 360 in over a year. I'm so paranoid that I will get my 3rd RROD I just don't trust the 360 any more
mithos90
OK this really is p'ing me off. Why are they even fan boi's for any system AT ALL? I have ALL 3 systems and I do not pledge allegiance to any of them because I am a gamer. I understand if you don't have enough money and you can't buy all systems but still. I Buy the systems for the games. I Play games for games. I do not play systems for games unlike more than half the gaming world out there. I know you guys have opinions but the reasons systems exists is to play games. Each system do have ups and downs BUT they are used "as tools" to play what public sees us as "Gamers". If you want to fight about consoles don't call yourself a gamer and call your self a "Consoler" or something. I am a "Gamer" I play games I DON'T play consoles. My Two Cents.

I bought MW2 for PS3 -- The FragFX gaming mouse works great for that game and is PS3 exclusive sooooooo. yeah.

Xbox because of the controller...any FPS will be on Xbox because of the controller...

There are a lot of comments on this article... i bet the tittle stings whats left of the 360 fanboy community like light on a vampire.... not the lame ones from twilight.

Why would you ever get MW2 on the P$3? The online community on PSN for this type of game pales in comparison with Live. Plus, that P$3 controller is no good for a shooter. The only reason to play a game on P$3 is to play alone. Sad and alone.

this actually surprises me about COD because 360 supposedly has flawless online play. i do not own one so i cannot comment on it. personally, i like the ps3 controller and the feel of playing a game rather than on the 360. for some reason i think it feels clunky. maybe other players are starting to figure this out too?
also, as ps3 has blu ray capabilities and all, will these games be of higher quality or faster processing on the ps3 because you can store more on a blu ray disc? or am i wrong there...

Please for anyone who complains about the PS controller remember that it was such a great design that Microsoft had to rip it off. Oh and i did not see you tools complaining when you loved it back in the PS1/PS2 days.
Oh and for the last time XBL is not better than PSN, if you think otherwise you need to go see a doctor.
drangel_jam
The reason why I'm getting the X360 versions of most if not all 3rd party games it's because I'm more active on XBL, and because my friends on XBL that much more active, and feautures like Party chat and all that are seamlessly integrated on XBL, and most importantly, I can play all of the games with custom soundtracks, unlike the PS3. After playing a gaming for so long, I want to enjoy the gameplay while litstening to whatever I feel like, the X360 allows me to do so with every game, in the PS3 it depends.
But I understand why some would shift to the PS3: PSN is free, so you can always play online, no need to update your payment if you do the monthly thing, the PS3 is viable--no worries of it dying on you on the weak the game comes out, and the PS3 is the newer console so why not give some miles with a great game--rather it's 1st or 3rd party developed.

I've really gotten into trophy mining for the PS3, so I tend to buy multi-plats on the PS3 (wish some older games would get trophy patches). Even with more friends on the 360, I just prefer the PS3. I do however buy a game on 360 if the PS3 gets a bad port, which isn't as common anymore.
TheMuncho
Sadly, my PS3 is a glorified blu-ray player right now... I play the exclusive games on there but my 360 gets the most use.
Zathrix
While I love the ps3 I really only use it for the exclusives. Any multiplatform I go with xbox; mainly because the controller is just so much more comfortable, and the online is just better. So while the ps3 may be gaining ground, which is great, I'm sticking to the 360 for multiplatform titles.
triggerhippy
It would be silly to buy a multiplayer game like MW2 on PS3 because XBL's multiplayer is much better. That being said, if it's a single player game that ends up looking better on PS3 why not get it for that if you have the option?
I know most multiplatform games end up looking the same or being more stable on the 360 but Dragon Age Origins is a recent example where the PS3 version looks much better (to be fair, it also has frame rate issues that the uglier 360 version doesn't have).
ggamer25
it looks like people are comingto there sense and going with PS3, i have many reason why this is so but heres juts one and no one can argue with this, *ahem* Red Ring of Death! yea nuff said!

ever since KZ2 my 360 has been collecting dust. I only play it when my friends are online and with college its becoming less and less as people get more and more busy. Any single player game i get for my ps3. And i'd like to start transitioning everything over as i don't want to pay for live anymore. But two of my best friends are getting MW2 on the 360 so i will too.
for me gaming is a social thing, so i do what i can to play with the most friends.
