Multi-console Owners Favoring PS3 Over Xbox 360 For Major Sequels?

Let’s say you own a copy of either Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and/or Assassin’s Creed on either the PlayStation 3 and/or the Xbox 360. With the impeding releases of highly anticipated sequels to both titles, it appears that you have a rather difficult decision to make, namely: Which version of said sequel are you going to buy?

The reason I ask is that OTX’s GamePlan Insights recently told Gamasutra that a surprising percentage of gamers who purchased COD4 and/or AC for the Xbox 360 have said they plan to buy PS3 versions of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and/or Assassin's Creed II, respectively. Fifteen-percent of gamers who own a 360 copy of AC said they will be picking up a PS3 copy of its sequel, while just 7 percent who own a PS3 copy plan to buy the sequel for the 360.

OTX didn’t provide any figures with regards to Modern Warfare 2, but OTX said the percentages were similar to those for ACII. In light of this data, analyst Nick Williams believes, “The PS3 seems poised to shift the ratio of Xbox 360 to PS3 sales for most major multi-platform releases in its favor among dual owners.”

The fact that there are more PS3’s in living rooms now compared to when the first installments in these franchises were released might account for the MW2 shift, given the game’s significant multiplayer component. But Assassin’s Creed II is single-player only, so what could be causing so many gamers to choose the PS3 version over the 360 version?

It might very well be that gamers who didn’t want to shell out the cash for a PS3 two years ago decided to pick up a 360, and then when AC and COD4 came out, those were two massive games, so they bought them. But now, thanks to the price drop, those people who originally wanted a PS3 have been able to buy one, and buying games for your shiny new system is a commonly held attitude.

From a more industry-based perspective, the shift could be attributed to the way ACII was presented at this year’s E3, and the way the game has/will be marketed. During E3, Ubisoft used Microsoft’s press conference to show off Splinter Cell: Conviction, while it used Sony's press conference to showcase ACII. It’s hard to say exactly what kind of impact this had on gamers’ perceptions of ACII, it would be unwise to think it hasn’t influenced some percentage of gamers who paid close attention to the biggest gaming event of the year. Also, as GamesIndustry.biz reports, Ubisoft has revealed that it made a marketing deal with Sony earlier this year to have television ads for ACII feature only the PlayStation 3 logo. Given the surge in the number of PS3’s flying off store shelves these days, I'd say it's a pretty safe bet that we'll be seeing more and more ads for multi-platform games flashing the PS3 logo at the end of them moving forward.

Ultimately though, with the hard data concerning those 15 percent and 7 percent of gamers that OTX’s research highlights, it’s hard to say just how significant or widespread this shift from one console version of a game to another really is. However, if it is happening as frequently as this data suggests, then perhaps we’ll be finding out much more about it very soon.

What’s your take on all of this? Are you one of those people who are picking up a PS3 version of one of these games over the 360 version? Why the change? And if you can refrain from dragging this discussion into mindless fanboy-crazed territory, you’ll get 107 gold stars.

I have a few reasons for why I pick up a multiconsole game on ps3 or 360. Most multiplayer stuff I would much rather get for 360, for two reasons. 1. My experience with gamers on psn has been undesirable to say the least. In Uncharted 2 almost nobody uses a mic, and if they do, they are usually speaking another language =( 2. My friends list is much larger on xbox live. Probably directly because of number 1. Another thing I like to consider is if the game supports 1080i or not. I find it very annoying that the 360 upscales all games to display in1080 while the ps3 does not. Do you know how annoying it is to constantly have to change your output settings on the ps3 depending on what game you feel like playing? There is a 574 page thread on the ps3 boards about this issue.

I have ps3 and 360. Have had them both from day one pretty much. Never had RROD with the 360.
Dont have a prob with 360. As much as something about Microsoft, leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
I have cod4 for both platforms and played quite a bit of cod4 on 360. But paying to play online, and it is no better service than the Playstation network, Is foolish. All my online time is spent on playstation network. The only games I now buy for 360 is 360 only games, if its multi its the PS3. I like both but the ps3 is my first choice. Just like i have always prefered linux over windows. So I guess bottom line I am partial to the PS3. And I own more games for 360 than my PS3.

I'm getting MW2 for my 360 and if I get ACII then I'd get it for my 360 also probably, for any game where mulitiplayer becomes a factor, my PS3 just can't compete with my 360, I have 1 friend I play with on my PS3 while I have a couple dozen on my 360, and the online is just plain better on the 360.

does it really matter, it's not like when Soul Calitbur 4 did the specail character, it'll be the same game right, it'll be a good game regardless of the platform. Sure, I have a 360, but I care of the game itself, not the platform.

yeah i have both consoles but no offense guys but i just hate xbox360. plus you have to pay for the online play??? and ps3 online play is soo much kick ass than xbox online play! and ofcourse it has blur ray! Sony Company has been in the console industry for good many years. and it is more experienced and provide much better service than xbox! I TRUST AND LOYAL TO PS3! even though i have xbox360 i barely play it. its all dusty and stuff

I still have my x-box 360 elite limited Halo edition and it still works great, has not had the red ring of death yet!

The reason why I bought a Play Station 3 was of Metal Gear Solid Guns of the Patriots!
I wish micro soft would fix the red ring of death in the 360 , I really hope they would!

    I like both consoles .

Well going by the comments most people with both systems will be getting the games for XBox... So I don't know how they figure this stuff out but I also don't know anybody with PS3's and almost everybody seems to have an xbox. And when it breaks (it will) you have to buy xbox again to play with your friends. My xbox broke within the first year, my friends broke within the first year and he bought a used one which broke in a month and he just bought another one, his brother went through 4 in 3 years...

Getting all games for 360 that i can. Only get a few PS3 exclusives for the PS3. Reason being stable online, controller, system reliability, load times, not being forced to install games. don't know anyone with a PS3 i would want to play multyplayer with.

If i had to choose when it comes to multiplatform games i'd rather go with the 360 version of any game. no offense but the 360 doesn't have to deal with mandatroy installs when you buy a new game. the 360 you can just drop the disk in and start playing right away.

plus most of the 360 games get exclusive downloadable content (case in point GTA4.) plus the 360 version of Dragonage origins (as well as the pc version) has exclusive armor that'll also work with Mass Effect 2.

I have nothing against the ps3 as i have one but i have far more games for the 360 then i do the ps3.

i once was a multi-console owner. my 360 broke like 4 months ago. i have since then bought COD4 for the ps3. i played AC1 on the 360 and have no other choice but to buy both MW2 & AC2 for the ps3. now that a look back i believe i would've still bought both of the games for the ps3. i'm hoping they have DTS output because those are the only reasons i have come to buy more ps3 games. everything else is basically the same for both consoles.

I'm going to get MW2 on my XBOX360 instead of the PS3. More interested in a gamer points on the 360 and most of my friends will being playing on XBL.

My PS3 is mainly for exclusives or single-player games, mostly because none of my friends that I would play online with have a PS3. Definitely getting MW2 for the 360, but AC2 is still up in the air.
