Activision "Not Overly Concerned" About Reaction To Dedicated Servers

Activision

The response to Infinity Ward's decision to remove support for player-run dedicated servers from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and embrace console-style matchmaking has been near-universally negative from hardcore PC users. Activision has allowed Infinity Ward to respond directly to players since the news broke, but on an Activision quarterly results call, an analyst asked the publisher if the reaction would have a notable impact on the sales of the PC version of Modern Warfare 2.

In short: Activision's not worried.

"We're of course watching this very carefully and paying attention it it, but we're not overly concerned about it," said Activision Publishing head Michael Griffith. "One of the problems of our PC [versions] on this title in the past is that it has not been as friendly a consumer experience in terms of matchmaking and online play as the consoles have allowed it to be. Our solution here improves that consumer experience overall by a significant margin, so we we think the benefits that we will see are gonna far outweigh any negatives that seem to be surfacing."

Of course, we won't know the real-world impact until Modern Warfare 2 goes on sale next week, where gamers will be forced to put their money where their mouth is. Just a few days now...

i know its a little late but maybe instead of signing some online petition to get them to fix their ways maybe we should go to the retailers and ask them not to sell the game. Activison and IW could'nt care less about some petition asking them to give us dedticated servers but if enough people go to their local gamestop, EB games, Software ETC, or what ever retailer you go to for your games (not wal-mart they're nazis) enough times in good enough numbers they'll have to listen to you beacause they still need you to come back and buy other games and crap too. it's kinda like holding them hostage and saying "do what we say of you loose all your customers" and since gamestop has the motto "power to the player" to deny you would create a PR nightmare for them that i'm pretty sure they would like to avoid at all costs. i know its a little late in the game to come up with this kind of idea, but it just a thought.

i dont understand why IW couldnt have made a hybrid system that tells you in the beginning of multiplayer Do you want easy to use? or No i know how to join a server so it could have two parts where a matchmaking system would be used for vanilla servers while someone who PC games can just have it the normal way

console kiddies are so amusing. maybe if they had been around when games like battlefield first came out while they were still playing with blocks and dolls in day care, they would understand that a console experience is the last thing that any pc user wants. these guys that always say "go buy a console" or "youre gonna buy it anyways" obviously have never been to a LAN party or played on servers where you see the same guys playing for the most part. And not every pc games out there has only a pc. I have a console, but FPS games on a console SUCK ASS. The controls and multiplayer options are sub par in my opinion. I had a friend who was hardcore console who built a gaming pc for about $600 for you guys who are living in the 90's still, and claimed he could wipe the floor up with his 360 style pc controller vs my keyboard and mouse. he wasnt even close. so you console guys can keep your controllers along with your matchmaking. and you people who cry about video cards being to confusing or expensive, you obviously dont know how to shop around, and the last time i actually bought a "sound card" clinton was president. Mobo's have had onboard audio for friggin ages. everyone has a reason for liking what they like. console users obviously just want it to play and could care less about anything else. pc users are different, hobbyists for the most part. I play my console to play games like GTA or sports games, thats it. thats its purpose. I play my rpgs, fps, and rts on my pc along with editing my photos, surfing the web and reading dumbass comments like "go buy a console"

That's what it should have been from the start. It should be played on a console anyway.

This is bs. I hope not a single PC version is sold. Activision and Infinity Ward are getting full of themselves. This always precludes a nasty reality check. And it will happen to them soon.

This whinning is such a load of BS!!

FACE IT...YOUR ALL GONNA BUY IT ANYWAY!!

We are talking about the hard-core PC crowd here. Even if they boycott, it won't hurt sales.
People claim that PC gaming is " Unique, flexible, and personable." I call it "frustrating, expensive, and over-all, a pain in the ass." I always preferred the controls, but got tired of needing a new video/sound card every time a new game came out.

Have fun "tweaking and customizing" for hours, and never getting the game to look/play it's best.

I put the disc in, it runs, and looks great on my HDTV that I bought with the money I probably would have spent upgrading.

I must say I agree with alot of what some of you have said. Activision has been failing in customer relations since the current CEO's regime was installed. My faith in this company caring about their customers has constantly fallen as a result. Frankly, as long as the whackjob at the top is in power, this company will continue make decisions like this. As it is the only game I buy from Activision is Call of Duty and WoW (though Wow is more Blizzard than Activision). I gave up on Guitar Hero a long time ago, and am frankly glad to be off that band wagon. I think the stockholders of Activision should take note...the more consumers the current regime drives away, the less money you make.

If it weren't for all the people using servers to "Level UP" and admins that kick people for killing them too many times, maybe this wouldn't have happened.

Plus, their are more casual then hardcore COD PC gamers. Activision is going to serve the side with the most people = $$$.

Should Activision be worried about the PCs sales?
No. It takes a lot less amount of units sold on a PC to be a successful game.

Everyone ask you local Gamestop(s) how many pre-orders did they get for this game on the PC and how many cancelled. In my area (2 Gamestops), 12 ordered and only 4 cancelled (Los Angeles).

PC Gamers - the ball is in your court now. You signed the petition, now is the time to keep your word. If you buy this, all you are doing is giving into the man. Damn the man. Don't give in or you just prove that your word is crap and ole Bobby Kot can do what he likes. Damn the man, save the servers!

personally i feel like i just got spat in the face by IW i haven't been a PC gamer that long so i can't lay claim to "being there in the beginning " but just the same. i like being a PC gamer it feels more personal. show up at a lan party with your rig and show off what you had it was fun, every body had something different it was a unique experience like dedicated servers, you cant do that with a console oh, "wow you have a nifty sticker you got at wal-mart big woop for you" or "oh cool you have a 80gb hard drive" big f-ing deal my iPod has more space than that! find that one server that really appeals to you that one server that made you glad that you got the game, not some over hyped story that's going to be copied to death by every other company out there in two moths just one server that some guy in his room made not to try and meet some marketing quota and scam you for your hard earned money but to make a game last way longer the developer ever thought possible i mean how long has counter strike been out? and people still play on a regular basis? And it's not just the dedicated servers i can't speak for anybody else but i saved up the 80+ dollars to by the hardened edition but guess what they canceled it for the PC and they didn't even bother to make a prestige edition for us either and when i found that i was a little pissed and kinda heart broken, not crying heartbroken, more like your parents forgot your birthday heartbroken. What makes the console people so damn special that they not only get a special edition that come in a fancy metal case that come with some cool extras but they even get a more special edition that comes with a pair of night vision goggles. NIGHT VISION FREAKING GOGGLES!!! i feel like the disregarded child loosing out to the freaking step child! What I think needs to happen is for those of you that want to boycott the game but are still a little curious DON'T BUY THE GAME instead get bittorrent and download the sucker that way you still get to see what the story is about and still have the satisfaction of denying IW your hard earned money to a game that denied you your god given right as a PC gamer!

oh and sorry if this seems like an incoherent rant but i was also killing a case of blue ribbon.

PC gamers better hope this isnt a growing trend because if so, all they really have left is better controls. Personally...I used to be a HUGE PC gamer and still have a powerful computer that can run almost anything, but I still buy most of my games on console and will do the same for MW2. I personally never really liked most multiplayers on PC as it was always to frustrating when it came to actually getting into a good match unless you got in good with a clan or group. I personally have a few people I like to play with but really could care less about meeting new people online, which seemed to be the only way it was possible to actually stay in a match without getting kicked for nobody knowing you or whatever. Im sure this will still happen from time to time with the choice of servers but it seems to happen less this way, at least for me. Sure there were some very cool creative things that were made thanks to dedicated servers and I certainly understand the appeal, but it does not effect me in any way as I really enjoyed the online experience on the 360 from the first MW so I have no reason to worry. I feel for the PC players because theyve had this option for soooo long its probably difficult to play without it but I doubt it will effect the game THAT much in the end, just what the consumers can DO with the game. One thing that does suck that I read somewhere was that it will only be 9v9 on PC and that I can understand the amount of upset people because thats weak sauce.

the official website points out about that THEY will be doing an AUTO MATCH MAKING feature.

    W T F

I am not the world's quickest draw, gunfighter, nor can I use the mouse to down 5 enemies with 5 bullets in 1.5 seconds. However, I want to play against people who are better than myself. Believe it or not, I like to be beaten and whipped and want to have the ability to see and view other people who are better than me. I love to know how someone got a +10 kill streak on a one life per match server. It helps me improve my game. It lets me try to get the edge on people. It lets me improve. There is nothing wrong in auto-matching, if I want it. However, I will want it mostly off! How will I know what to do to better myself if I am with the same crappy low skilled players - all the time?

Third, I dont want any RAMBO SERVER and I want a mature server. I want a server that enforces you to play like a trained soldier and will reward players who do so. Versus a server that does not care and only reward people who can get the most kills no matter how unrealistic the events were. I am a nerd. MOST OF US ARE NERDS. Then there are people who think shouting out the latest 4 letter verbage is natural. If I wanted to talk about that or about "your mom" then I would join the XBOX live games. I want the ability to play with other like minded individuals who are wanting to increase the maturity of the game and raise the bar in skills and communication skills.

What are my ideal type of servers?

Hardcore type servers. Servers that force us to think and behave more like a trained soldier rather than a Rambo type person. I want a Server where I only get ONE LIFE per MATCH. If a match lasts 10 minutes and I die within 15 seconds - I do not want to respawn and be a RAMBO style player and rush to another death. I want to be ashamed of my death and watch other people play as I wish I played better. I want to be pushed to my limits and get penalized when I either get unlucky or foolish. I want to be able to win a game - because a random set of people come up with a solid good strategy and win versus closing your eyes and tossing a nade at the spawn point. i also want a server that will make you feel good about winning. When my side wins and I live - it feels like I really accomplished something.

Will we have these types of servers?

I also want the ability to find like minded people and enjoy the game with my online frends. Would you believe I have met people online who I value my friendship over some real life friends? Just recently, a woman I have met online in a game came over on my birthday (yes women do play) and we had a blast meeting each other in real life! She even got her first tattoo on my birthday to celebrate the event. I was just lucky enough to be holding her hand for hours on end and chatting as she got inked.

Will we have these types of servers?

No I do not want online dating. Believe it or not, you can be friends. Regardless, I am looking for a core group of people who I like to get to know and befriend. Some people call them clans and other call them guilds. WHO CARES. I want to be able to join a server and know some or most of the people there will be people I will enjoy playing with. Likewise, I want to go to a server that has a hardcore ruleset and will also be willing to befriend me and know who I am as well!

    Am I done ranting?

Not yet, I have not signed the PC Petition. Let us face it, the game looks amazing. I still want to play it! I know many PC gamers are angry, but most will probably end up buying the game. Sure, a few will hold out a day or two... until other people go, "OMG WOW! DID YOU CAN DO XYZ AND FIND ABC?"

However, if we truely want companies to listen we must do what is important to them... not buy the game - make them listen to us or make them lose money. if you sell out now, you are promoting lower quality games. Sure you will lose out on the Experience. But in the end, do you want high quality games or crappy games not worth your money? I have not signed the petition. It will not matter and most will still buy the game (one way or the other). However, if you are tired of game companies thinking the PC is only for WOW and other MMOs - do the right thing and DO NOT BUY THE GAME.

Until companies realize not to abuse their customers and listen to the game communities I will stick with games I want to play. Dont expect me to rush out and buy any XBOX or PS3 for this or any game I want to play on my PC. I have been a PC gamer for over a decade. Why should I change? If game companies dont make games for what I have - then why should WE spend more on a silly game system if we dont want or like to?
