Halo Legends Comic-Con 09 Trailer »

Hardcore Halo fans will soon have a chance to experience the game’s expansive universe in an entirely new way thanks to Halo Legends, a collection of animated short films created by some of Japan’s most acclaimed animation studios. Microsoft announced today that the collection will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on Feb. 9, 2010 in both a standard edition and 2-disc special edition.

The special edition will include hours of bonus content including:

  • Audio commentary with directors Frank O’Connor and Joseph Chou
  • “The Making of Halo Legends
  • “Halo: Gaming Evolved” – Explore the Halo phenomenon from its inception as an Xbox title to the massive franchise it is today

The Blu-ray version will include all of the aforementioned content, plus a feature called “Halo: The Story So Far,” which basically just provides an overview of what’s happened over the course of the first three Halo games.

If you don’t feel like waiting until February to see the short films, the entire collection will be streamed live on a weekly basis via the new Halo Waypoint portal on Xbox Live starting Nov. 7. You can find the complete airing schedule over at the Halo Legends official site.

What do you Halo-lovers think about this collection? Are you excited, indifferent, curious?

I'm just planning on seeing this because (neo) ADV's dubbing studio will be doing the voice work. They always do great work, and did a great job on Appleseed Ex Machina for Warner, so I'm sure they will do a great job here. Now the actual quality of the shorts will be another issue altogether. But I can't wait to see what they do with the voice work.

Anime is the ONLY way to go for this. The American animation style is fairly derivative of anime anyway. Even if the story is off, can't you appreciate it for its aesthetic appeal? If you fanboys out there aren't able do that, DON'T WATCH IT!

Halo has been milked dry. The story makes no sense and the games have been progressively worse since CE. What a garbage franchise.

The art style is certainly nice. Halo was never more than a game for me though. I play the games, never truly caring about the story or characters. There have only been a handful of games that have pulled me into to it's respective universe and I can confidently say that the Halo, Call of Duty, Gears of War and Splinter Cell franchises are not any that made me want to explore the mythos.

Looks badass, although I'm not too fond of that whole Zoids, fake 3-D style they throw in some of those clips. And how is a Red sparton not up to canon? I wasn't aware that it was impossible to paint metal.

Its not from japan if it doesnt have some over the top Spartan Mecha with big guns, firing tons of spiral missiles and lots of grunting. Now where is that tenacle rape of a female SPartan?

It looks like they're doing an Animatrix approach with this with multiple perspectives on the Halo universe and I think that's cool. I can't wait to see the individual and unique art styles from all the different studios. I find it funny that you say Hardcore Halo fans since anime fans would qualify to be excited and not necessarily play any Halo games.

There's room for some story-lines that may not exactly jibe with canon. It looks interesting and I'll probably check it out.

This looks alright so far. I've been craving a decent anime series lately. I love the Halo series, I love anime, so, what could go wrong, huh?

na, I'll pass. Halo is to mainstream for me anymore. I'll keep the money in my pocket and invest it into something a little more worthy.

I don't understand how any Halo fan could like this. Being a huge fan myself, I know they are blowing huge holes in the story. Like the red Spartan, or the frigging mecha-robots, or the flying contraptions the Spartans ride on. I honestly hope something oes horribly wrong and these never come out, same with the Halo Movie. Halo deserves a proper burial as the greatest game series of all time, not this.
