Tekken 6

Welcome to Morning Hangover -- an excellent way to start your day with the crew at TheFeed...no matter what you're recovering from. Every morning you'll hear musings from our editors and have the chance to share your thoughts on what's going on in the gaming world.

I’ll be honest. I know absolutely nothing about modern fighting games. Sure, I’m familiar with them all, and I’ve tried most of them out briefly at one point or another, but beyond that, my knowledge is extremely limited. As such, when Sterling “My Hair Just Don’t Care” McGarvey came into the office yesterday, ranting about Tekken 6, all I could really do was sit back and enjoy the lesson. I won’t get into exactly what Sterling’s arguments were, since Tekken 6 was one of the games featured on this week’s Feedback, so you’ll be able to find out all about it then.

However, I want to open up the floor to all you fighting game fans to find out how Tekken stacks up against the other major fighting franchises out there. From what I’ve heard, Tekken is rather low on the respectability list. Is that true? If so, why is that? What do franchises like Street Fighter and Virtua Fighter offer that Tekken doesn’t? What is your fighting game of choice, and why?

TheFeed gang wants your thoughts on gaming, tech, the pros and cons of semi-professional knitting, and more. Let everyone know what you're thinking and chat it up with your fellow readers. Leave comments on anything and everything that's on your (gaming/tech/nerd) mind!

I play lots of fighting games may it be SF, VF, KOF, BB, FOTNS, GG, Tekken and etc. If the game is good I play it. It doesn't matter to me if some people don't like it, they have their own taste, I have mine.

The problem with this Tekken is that it feels like "more of the same". With games like Street Fighter 4 and Soul Calibur 4 on the current gen systems, there were a few subtle changes(revenge gauge and focus attacks for SF and guard damage and finishers for those pesky blockers in Soul Calibur)that added a fresh breath of life into the games that made the fights more balanced. In Tekken 6 they did give you the ability to cause more damage when you're close to death, but what stops the air juggling?

I was also a little ticked off that they would remove the CGI prologue and epilogue movies from arcade mode in Tekken 6. Why should I have to go through another terrible version of Tekken Force Mode just to unlock Arena Mode, just to unlock endings?! LAME!! Of course they tried to make up for it by allowing you to customize your favorite Tekken character, but why not go the extra step and let you create your own? In Soul Calibur 4,not only can I customize my favorite characters, I CAN make my own.

All in all, there wasn't much added to Tekken 6, other than the amazing visuals, that made it different than Tekken 5 (a game you can get for $20 used for PS2 or download Tekken 5: Dark Ressurection on PSN). In the end, nothing was added to justify the new gen $60 price tag and in today's economy where dollars are few and far in between, isn't that what matters?

The biggest difference between VF and Tekken are the rules of the system, and how rigid those rules are. Tekken has a very loose structure when compared to VF, but many new VF players complain that the rules are too strict. I've found that I prefer the system to be predictable (VF) rather than almost random (Tekken). But its personal preference and I respect that.

I need to note though that most moves in VF are NOT hard to pull off, as long as you're using a joystick. VF was made to be played in arcades, so the control scheme reflects that of a joystick setup. The VF series has made no concessions to the console market, which could account for its declining popularity, but also explains why true VF fans are so rabid.

Akira's knee is actually quite easy if you're using a joystick, and you have the right method, FYI

First off, dead or alive is one of the worst 3d fighters ever and doesn't hold a candle to the two best which are VF and Tekken. Anyone who doesn't think this game is a "button-masher" has never played it. DOA matches are boring, all people do is wait to do a counter which takes off a huge amount of life, then finish off with a three more hits and the match is over, lame. Street fighter is a totally different beast so you can't really compair it with Tekken. But if you want to talk about repititon, Street fighter is the way to go. Seriously, Street fighter has around 19 games where people have been using the same ol' strategies time and time again, so the depth factor isn't really there in SF. Soul caliber lost it's shine when they went from "Blade" to "Caliber". SC like DOA is a masher. Also just like DOA, Soul caliber's gameplay hasn't changed since the 2nd game, which is a bad thing. Virtual fighter is the only 3d fighter that's on the same tier as Tekken. Both games are deep and enjoyable with right amount of simplicity and challenge. The only problems VF has are that some of the moves are near impossible to pull off(akira) and the throws come out of nowhere and are haerd to counter. So with that Tekken squeeks by VF just by a hair. Oh and by the way, the most realistic fighting game is Bushido blade which really needs to come back.

Well see the problem here is that Tekken 6 sounded like a fantastic idea......on paper but the problem with game makers and companies today is that they don't listen to the consumer and their thoughts on improving the game, just like Guitar Hero and a bunch of other games. Tekken was a disappointment, they added nothing, did nothing. Sure added a few thing here or there and they know they don't dedicate enough for the online which is what the game is about after you beat it with all 40 some wad characters. I hated Street Fighter, I jumped right into 4 and there was no tutorial, no how to, anything. I went in and couldn't even win one match. Sure I practiced and all in practice mode but really that got me no where. I never played VF but I'm not sure I want to. I feel if I jump in now, I will not understand whats going on, kinda like Street Fighter. With DoA, the online is still dedicated, the only lag you get is P2P connection and that, well you can't help but not join that game really but that fighting game was really good. Story line and all, I'm still wishing for a 5th. They kept everything plain and simple, fight and win. They added a few characters here or there and in the online shop you could unlock the clothing, blah blah blah. It was fun. I still play it. What game makers need to do, if they are going to make a sequel, new franchise, or whatever, do it right THE FIRST TIME! Don't make it complicated with the rage system, don't have AI cheep as heck, make the characters equal and fair. Unlike DoA with their Ninjas.(but I still love them). And hell, if they make it to a sequel, take a survey, ask questions, do polls, anything to ask the consumer to make the game better and do it. If the consumer is happy, your game is good. With Tekken, then crammed almost everything into one disk, lowered the quality, still didn't care about online and shipped the game. I wouldn't say it was rushed, more like unchecked. Games like Tekken need a cool down and a reboot then come back. If the main purpose of the game (which i think it was) was to give the fans more storyline and have at it. Sure, I'm one of em but that doesn't mean you make a shotty game in the process. People, like me, care about the online. We care on how the AI handles, the moves, the characters, everything. Fighting games need a new specialty besides juggling for that matter. I mean look at Marvel vs. Capcom, that was a great game for what it was and the hyper-combo move were really good. I, as a consumer, expect a lot from the upcoming Capcom vs. game. Its holds its promises, just like this game did. Hopefully they will take their time with it and be successful.

Bottom line: Slow down, reboot, rethink, and take your time. We as gamers want a game we can all play, for the new ones and to the vets.

You mean the ability to block! Street fighter is a chess game. VF is simple and deep at the same time. Tekken feels like crap, looks great! I hate the juggle system and bounce you off the floor. Iron Fist was great back in 94 and 95. I spent 65 dollar on the game and it is hanging on my wall as a display of bad games I have bought. You want to know how tekken could get better? Hand the rights over to capcom and watch how they improve the game. Other than that you will get the same crap over and over again. Everyone knows it only took one play threw the game to understand the amount of garbage tekken is. I am ashamed to let people know I played this game.

Isnt just that, alot of the moves are largely unbalanced, how do you do a 3 hit combo and somehow destroy more than half of a life gauge?

Or just one hit totally KOing you from full health?

Thats Tekken, and no other game does it, juggles are one thing and thats what VF and DoA do well, but with Tekken any person can get one lucky hit through a frame error and end the match in one button mashed combo or even just one strike.

Personally, I don't like Tekken for the fact that the juggling can be ludacris, same goes for any other juggle fest game. I am one to prefer Street Fighter if only for the simple depth. Others have said Tekken is very complicated with a huge roster of moves, characters and it's way too much if you ask me. Anyone new to the franchise will be overwhelmed and if they're not dedicated, then the game is just going to sit on the shelf. I think the Tekken franchise could stand a bit of a reboot and just tone it all down a bit without so much of the tacky stupid stuff. Honestly, what does a Bear want with the King of Iron Fist Tournament trophy? How does a raptor fit into all of this? A living training dummy and a girl version of one? How many times can you reskin a capoeira fighter? IDK, it's all just too much and they never let anyone die. The size of the roster attests to that.

I expect thumbs downs, but frankly,

Virtua Fighter 5 just does so many things better than Tekken 6, even two years after its release.

That's the crux of yesterday's off-the-cuff rant. Also, I had coffee running through my veins, which didn't help.

Yeah, I'm not nearly Pro enough to know the lackings of the technical aspects of this series. I am a fan of most fighters, love SF, Soul Caliber, Tekken, etc. Love Smash Bros even more, but that's kind of not a "Fighter" in the classical sense. Also, have I been blind, or has Hangover been absent for a few days?

Tekken will never be regarded as highly as everything else out there because of its ability to allow basically anyone to have zero idea what they are doing and button mash themselves to victory.

No other game really has it that easy and most are almost made to PUNISH people like that, Tekken does no such thing which is likely why people like it so much because they fail at everything else.

VF has a deeper combo/juggle system, SF has always been a fighting staple for being simplistic yet sophisticated and difficult at the same time, DoA had a deeper combo and counter system, Guilty Gear and Blazblue were 2D games meant for faster action and werent as easy to pick up and play as SF would be.

What does Tekken have? Pick Law,Jack,Brian Fury,Lee...hell ANYONE and mash Square (Or X for 360) and let me know how many times you win, because I promise you it will be more often than on SF4, even fireball spammers use more strategy than anything thats required in Tekken.

I've always considered Tekken to be high on my respectotrometer; especially dark resurrection. It's certainly better than a certain game that is more dead than alive if you catch my meaning. Every character is unique and the combos are fun to learn. It's also a pretty game. What more could you want out of a fighter? It might not be as technically proficient as the virtua fighter series, but for balls out, fist (paw?) pounding action, I think the game is much more fun. It's definitely better than Fight For Life. Yeah, I still remember that game.

Don't forget guys samurai showdown exclusive for xbox360 comes out November 30, I love fighting games but sometimes they are too repetitive can they ever upgrade power moves or not copy the same character and just name them different. But I still fall for beautiful graphics and finishers. PLus unlike any other genre fighting games are the best to just pick up and play.

The most alluring part of Tekken to me is the story beaten Grandfather, Father, and Son. Ones a devil, his mom was an angel, hes half angel half devil.

Personally, I've been a Tekken crack head for over a decade. I have been playing Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection online for the last 2 years and loved it despite it having some lag issues which I mostly blame Namco for since there was no dedicated server for it. Since everything was P2P it caused lag issues here and there. I figured maybe Namco listened to its fans from that generation when they had Tekken 6 in mind. Obviously they did just the opposite and ignored everything. The difference between Tekken and every other fighting game out there is mostly the juggling system I believe which allows you to get creative in your combinations to do big damage to your foe while in mid air , constantly trying to keep the opponent up in the air as long as possible to inflict the most damage while they are defenseless. The problem with this is that with Tekken 6 , the lag is so much worse then it was in 5 that there's no chance of timing your moves to do the creative juggles you may have discovered in the practice mode so you're stuck having to simply your combos for the sake of atleast having them connect. You can't block low because the lag is so bad , that you may hold down back to block low as soon as you see the attacker going for it but its still too late, they'll connect, trip you up and then the ground game keeps you from getting up for the duration of the round. And just when you thought the cheese tactics were over, the next challanger does the same exact strategy with a different character. There's no way to level the playing field. For the first week I was ranked #1 on 360 (and varied between #5-#23 for awhile ) and after everyone learned their cheese tactics that can't be blocked from the lag, it just went downhill. It just sickens me that Namco let this happen. And now they want to fix it because everyone's complaining now. What a crock.

So old school I actually still enjoy Tobal No.1. But with the deep skill sets required with the new games, it just not my cup of tea.

wow this is a topic thats very interesting and one I can sorta go in depth on

tekken is a game that has extremely deep fighting mechanics. so deep in fact, that most people who pick up and play will never do more than play with the button mashing characters (eddy hworang lili, etc) the only game that it is comparable to in terms of depth is virtua fighter unlike street fighter it can take several months maybe even a year or 2 to really get respectable with a character because strategies are endless and everyone has a different play style.

when I picked up tekken 6 after really becoming decent with raven in tekken 5 dark resurrection I found that they changed the guy so much that I was almost learning a new character due to many game play mechanics and what not

and while it lags online I notice most people find about 5 moves that they use button mash to death while thats acceptable in street fighter because of the limited move list it makes players predictable , I've talked to alot of non tekken fans about tekken and they say the very same thing, its very hard and is extremely time consuming to get good at which pretty much kills its popularity in the states

overseas on the other hand welcomes the depth, the tournaments held in japan and korea along with things like the tekken 6 team battle TV show pretty much show that overseas people are willing to put in the time and really learn what it takes to hold your own

so in closing, the very thing that makes a game like tekken great and virtually limitless is the same thing that makes newer and casual players stay away from it entirely

Long time Smash Brother(Best with Kirby, sometimes use Olimar) here, just got onto the Street Fighter train w/ SFIV. Play a little MVC2 but since I mostly suck when it comes to competitive games I normally play as Dan the Man.

    *SNIFF*, I DID IT, FATHER!

P.S., I do enjoy fighting games/playing as Dan even though I suck.

I too am not really a fighting game kind of guy. I have never played a Tekken game so I can't comment on it. The one franchise that I do enjoy on occasion in the fighting genre is Soul Calibur. I had the original for the Dream Cast and I loved it. Now I have that game and Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 (Both for Dream Cast nostalgia) for XBLA and SC IV. Aside from that, fighting games haven't really appealed to me much.
