Given the massive launches of several high profile sequels over the coming weeks, it’s fitting that LittleBigPlanet developer, Media Molecule, is speaking openly about having very little interest in creating a flat-out sequel to its wildly popular PlayStation 3 platformer.
When asked about the developer’s interest in developing a new LBP as opposed to continuing to support LBP with DLC, producer Martin Lynagh told Critical Gamer, “I think what you’ve seen so far from LittleBigPlanet, that’s the way it’s going to continue.”
According to level designer Danny Leaver, a straight up sequel would “fragment the LBP community,” and “That’d be the most countrerproductive thing you could do I think.”
It’s refreshing to see a developer take a firm stance against the kind of sequel-for-sequels-sake attitude that shows up so often in gaming these days, and standing behind their initial vision in such a clearly gamer-oriented way. And I guess if the developers are able to release updates that continue to push the engine in new and creative ways then I don’t see any problem with the game not receiving a true sequel for a while.
What do die-hard LBP fans think about continual DLC releases vs. a sequel?

I agree. We don't need a sequel. Some highly anticipated games/movies that are sequels (Sonic Unleashed, Transformers 2) turn into bull after the harsh reviews these days. Just keep releasing those DLCs, MediaMolecule!

They should add new gameplay mechanics, like double jump and be able to climb walls and ledges. Another cool thing would be melee combat of some sort, sorta like Rag Doll Kung Fu but LBP stile. This way you can actually fight the creatures and not just jump on there bubbles (talking about bubbles, it would be cool to be able to change the sound the price bubbles make when you get them). But over all, is good what MM is doing, they really care for us gamers and artist alike.

Dude the first one was the most creative game ive ever played. I loved it and my girlfriend loved it my litle brother and sister loved it.I have not played a game my whole family liked and could play with a low learning curv everyone was playing in notime we cant wait for the next one.

this game doesn't seem like a game that would get a sequel. Maybe a good amount of DLC or a cheap arcade version.
SoaringSun
DLC for sure, seems like a silly question

I don't think they should a sequel at least not yet. They should do like GTA4 if they can make add-ons for like 20 dollars, stuff like that to modify like the world are a different way. Are something like that.

Something like Mod Nation Racer would be a logical next step for MM, but somebody else is doing it.
No sequal to LBP, but I would live to see something new by MM, they are pretty creative.

I think saying "wildly popular" may be overstating it just a bit. At least when it comes to sales.

lbp is one game i would prefer dlc for over a second game. Unless the second game adds something truly innovative and new while preserving the use of all previous content its really not worth it. To MM or to their community.
Why would they want to release something on disks and have to pay distribution when they make more money by having it available for download?
This is one game it just makes sense to release small DLC packs for. I personally have bought almost every pack, and i really don't mind throwing down a few bucks for a really fun game. This game is timeless, and i can always come back to it. Being an artist myself the amount of content this game has is infinite.

I agree with Media Molecules stance. LittleBigPlanet is dependent on the relationship between a huge amount of players and creators. It would be like if YouTube came out with YouTube2, but the videos can only be on one or the other, no duplicates, and YouTube2 only worked on Macs and YouTube only worked on PC's... That was a terrible analogy, but it does help illustrate how chaotic two LittleBigPlanets would be.

I definitely think this is the right approach for LBP. I'm especially excited about the patch for Playstation Motion Controller that will be coming out upon it's release. Looking at the gameplay footage you can find of it on youtube, I believe this will be the next big step in creativity for LBP community level designers. No sequel needed for that, thier is enough innovation for new content through the players themselves.

What MM does with this game is great, u can make your own levels its like we the players are making the sequals every day. Also the cheap prices on DLC content makes sure we never run out of ideas. ----------------- i watched the preview video for water on MM website and im looking forward to it as if it was LBP2.

the only thing i could think of for a sequal is making it a true 3d platformer, but something tells me that would bea bad idea....

Free water DLC then LBP2

They don't need a sequel, however they should make dlc levels to play. I am sick of just costumes.

Unless they bring a crap load of new content and add some revolutionary new game mechanics, then I say neigh to the sequel. However it would be nice to have some more frequent updates and adding some tighter jumping and forward momentum mechanics. But I am still extremely happy with it as of now.

I honestly don't think they need a sequel, it's almost like a living breathing game, because there's always new DLC, storylines, etc. Unless, they plan on updating the graphics (which I think it's way too soon to do so).
TalkingLizard
I believe they should continue with the DLC instead of making a sequel. I'm not against, however, a new game featuring Sackboy. Less "LBP2" More "Adventures of Sackboy"...

I approve of the decision to continue with DLC for LBP. I'm not against, however, a new game featuring Sackboy. Less "LBP2" more "Adventures of Sackboy"
chromekreeper
honestly, the only thing i can see in a sequel is just more fabrics, tools, and all that, which just could be more DLC for the first game. what it needs to do is MAKE MORE LEVEL PACKS
