Sessler's Soapbox: Adam Calls Infinity Ward Out

This week's Soapbox gets a little serious. First, if you want to know what Adam is talking about, search YouTube for "Call of Duty Grenade Spamming" to find the original viral video that Adam will be talking about this week.

Once you've seen it, you'll understand where The Sess is coming from in this episode of Sessler's Soapbox. Adam is not a fan of the large amount of hate speech that is thrown about on Xbox Live and the PSN during multiplayer matches, and from his perspective, that video has given those activities a somewhat passive approval from Infinity Ward. This video couldn't have come at a worse time, considering Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is coming out in less than two weeks. Do you agree with Adam on this subject? Or do you believe the developer has no responsibility towards what gamers do while playing their game? And please, keep the discussions civil.

its hard to believe that a major game company with such a monumental game coming out would let this slip through. there is the possibly that it was simply a ACCIDENT and was unintentional (though this is a real shot in the dark to be honest). Ill admit, i have used/said some pretty hateful things to people but i always try to not use words that classify a group of people and degrade them. heck i don't even like it when games use words like this in the game itself like the word G@@k in WWI or WWII games. its wrong and should be avoided at all cost.

Hey hate the use of these type of words on Xbox Live or anywhere else for that matter. And it was definitely stupid of them to use that acronym. But it's definitely not gonna stop me from buying this game. People use words like that all the time, but when a company about to release a new game says it, it goes in the news. Don't just point fingers at IW, point them at the people you see using it in public.

Oh, and to solve this problem, just change the meaning of the word, because now a days people don't use it to discriminate gays, they use it to call their friends @$$holes for throwing a random grenade.

P.S. - That last part is from South Park.

adam i just kinda wanna make something clear, xbox live did now make this word used more than it ever was before. Thats really not fair to microsoft or any developer to say that they are the reason this word is used more.

    1. its people not the game that make people say it
    2. its like the internet you can say anything and "get away with it"
    3. who cares your actually seperating homosexuals more from society by making this a big deal. i mean yeah i aggree its not fair that they cant get married and that there so put off from the rest of society but really we would be doing people favors by just leaving it alone. Its sad most people think the way they do against homosexuals but history has shown us that the more diffrent people and things are the more we try to disconnect ourselves from it. yes we as gamers can stop saying stuff like that on xbl and psn but its not going to stop the fact that the word exsists and people will still use it.

Man, I thought I enjoyed Adam before, but I just straight up adored him in this soapbox. The passion in his eyes at one point while talking about singling out one section on humanity was an absolute pleasure to see.

On behalf of all gay gamers, and anyone who cares about the basic civil rights that should be anointed to all at birth, thank you from the bottom of my heart, Adam.

Before I begin if anyone has said this already I apologize. I have not had time to read all the comments. There are a lot of them. And before you read the first few sentences and give me the thumbs down please read all of what I have to say.
This really is a controversial issue. I haven t seen this many comments since Adam responded to the Killzone 2 comments (on a side note I hope Adam makes another soapbox like that). It is so disputable because we are pitting two rights against each other. We are pitting censorship against anti-discrimination. Some have said that this issue is not about censorship and that is not true. No matter how offensive or derogatory the term, no matter how stupid the party uttering the phrase, no matter how diluted, misunderstood, and overused of a discriminative slur the first amendment guarantees United States citizens the right to say whatever they want. That cannot be changed. The US government has tried that in the past like the Alien and Sedition Acts. That did not turn out well and proved how wrong censorship is.
That being said this infinity ward ad was a problem. That is evident by the reactions of everyone that saw the acronym or the soapbox. But content filters and speech restriction statutes are not the answer. The government and other organizations will not solve this problem it is a societal issue. For example if any person calls a random white guy a honky or some similar term what will be done? Nothing. That is because of their dominance in society. People will use a derogatory term to equalize themselves by lowering the dominant. If it is the other way then it is viewed as a breach of equality. The minority is being suppressed. We need to get it to the point where everyone is dominating enough in society for those words not to matter. Yes I know there is more history behind some of the most common offensive slurs but that is a good thing. What is history if not a learning tool? People in society can use the past to see the detrimental effects of such horrifying vernacular. The only solution is to evolve as a society.
Some people may think that that is to idealistic or unrealistic but it is not compared to what else I read. Most people are suggesting censorship. That is a totalitarian action which Hitler and Mussolini proved does not end well. The other alternative was to make it so that people never say anything offensive at all. That is much more impractical than a societal evolution.

WOW Thats what I have to start off with on this post. Agree or Disagree with Sessler? Maybe in the Middle. I can`t stand when your playin on the PSN or XBL and you have annoying ppl playing music or yelling ,they automatically get muted. Cursing I can deal with cause I throw in some myself. Hate slurs and discriminating words we can all live without. I agree with sessler when he spoke about why he lov gameing cause doesnt matter who or what you are it doesnt matter. Now that haveing been said I went on to youtube to check this out. Now I would have not looked into it that deeply and got that out of it im not gonna say it but Fight Against Grenade Spam, I would have not used that acronym from that saying or even used that kind of saying anyways. Do I think it was done intenionally no. But if it was I think its extremely wrong for doing so.Also we do have freedom of speech but we all know right from wrong and I will stop it at that. I hope the acronym was meant purposily. With that said I am still buying Cod Modern Warfare 2 for the PS3!!!!

    @ sleltawr

I haven't read all comments on this topic, but I am confident yours is one of the best and I thank you for it but I kida disagree a smidge. I live in the capital of gaytown usa SF CA, and I work in the restaurant biz. I got gays all over me. In a very straight kinda way. I love my gf but im down for the queer struggle. I think the point Adam is making is different. I (like you) joke around with my gay/mexican/black etc friends. Yeah we joke about racial and sexual issues to make light of them and remove the tension of potential elephants in the room. But that is among friends. I dont walk up to black people on the street and say "what's up n!$$er!" Beside the fact I would get my ass beat it is just plane rude. And I dare any homophobes to come walk through the Castro and throw around that other word that used to refer to a bundle of sticks. Those muscle queens would break you!
And that is kinda the point. Guys throwin around these derogatory terms in the comfort of their online anonymity are not subject to any social accountability. They should get their ass beat by the first gay or black person they see. But they dont. They display vile and base behavior because they will never have to take any responsibility for it.
And that to me is what is ofensive.

The sad fact is as long as our Government itself places restrictions on this way of life and make an issue of it there will always be hatred and bigotry. Look for instance the current elections in a state where more people sided with the legalization of Pot but turned down Homosexual marriage. That is just sad. Even sadder in this day in age, where we are suppose to be an enlightened society and so in touch with the rest of the world, there is even a need to take a vote on this issue. IW was trying to be hip and cool when they thought of this. They thought they were being "in touch" with today's gamers and youth by using that acronym and getting some sports athlete to be in it. I think Adam and the majority of us here on these comments have proved them wrong and that this is not acceptable or welcome.

It's great that someone in the public media is standing up for issues like this!

Honestly though, I just watched the video and if it wasn't for seeing the comments and not watching this, I wouldn't really have noticed. Whether or not it was a coincidence that the acryronm was that word, I don't know. Seems the fans are the one hyping that.

Either way, great rant. People really need to stop and think about stuff like this.

Yeah lets not say that black people actually get offended by the N word and claim that the miss pernunciation of the letter R changes the meaning. I can understand that F49907 can offend someone but with the way our culture uses it as a whole, it is just a quick simple insult. And if were conscerned about homosexuals takeing offense to it then should we worry about offending the ugly not so pleasant women, or people who gather wood for a living too. Im not against homosexuals but im also not against using vulgarity as a way to vent or insult someone who might not be a pretty, pleasant women that is fustrating you or already insulted you. If anything people should be insulted at the use of homosexual cause that is used as an insult and cant mean anything else but HOMOSEXUAL.

I said it before, and I'll say it again (and many others are starting to catch on), shut the hell up and watch the new South Park episode, and have the balls to sit through the entire episode before you get all bitter over a one syllable word and turn it off as a gut reaction. Rather be an intelligent human being who knows how to fully analyze something before makin a judgement. Funny, isn't that the kind of behavior this hype is purporting to fight against?
