For most of us, powering up our game consoles is an inconsequential task. We're constantly funnelling electricity into our homes, igniting our electronics with satisfying efficiency. But for Amish 21-year-old Faron Yoder, who was recently interviewed on the always fantastic This American Life podcast, it's a little trickier than that. Yoder has to...well, I'll let him tell the story.
"The rest of the house is very Amish, the whole house is very Amish -- no electricity, gas lighting," he said. "My room...I've got a TV, I've got a stereo, I've got a PlayStation 2. A lot of my friends come here over, we play PlayStation -- you know, and drink beer."
A life without electricity might drive me to beer, too. But without electricity, how do his friends flip on the TV and PlayStation 2? That's where Yoder had to put his thinking cap on.
"Well, actually, it's...I've got an electrical chord," he explained. "This is kind of funny probably. I've got an electrical chord that runs up to my TV and to everything and I've got it going out my window and I run the chord out to my car. So I just go out, start up the car, plug in the electrical chord and I spend the whole night up here and I don't have to worry about it."

Once, when the power was out, i powered a small TV and my xbox, using one of those 12 volt DC to 110 volt AC converter and two small 12 volt batteries (in parallel) from my little brothers jeep. power wheel. those batteries lasted for over three and a half hours before they died.

Hmm. Well if you have a cord running into your house from an electrical generator...guess what...you have electricity in your home. It's always interesting how people rationalize things.
I think the Amish are an interesting people, but they need to hold fast to their old ways or these kinds of erosions will eventually be their undoing. As far as Amish having cars, you bet they do but again this is a thing with more modern and progressive Amish, particularly with the youths.

About 4 years ago when we moved to the current condo were in I spent the about 10-12 hours ...As tired as i was i mustered enough strenght to pick up my 54 inch plasma..(by myself) set up the Xbox 360 and played Perfect Dark for about 3 hours. The only I regret is playing Perfect Dark for 3 hours what a crap game!!

When a hurricane rolled through my part of florida a couple years back, the power went out in over half the neighborhood. Luckilly there was no flooding so we were lucky. But my friend lived about 9 houses down from me and he had power so I did what im sure anyone else would do. Went to home depot, picked up a bunch of extention cables and duct tape and violated fire codes. I duck taped that extention cord all the way down the sidewalk and into his room. Luckily old people lived between us so they were to scared to come outside.

I just use a modified exercise bike to power a generator. get plenty of exercise while killing bitches.
