Developer Rare Helping Develop Project NatalBuried near the bottom of an interesting article on the history of the first-person shooter comes an interesting look into the genre's future from Rare’s Mark Betteridge. When asked how Microsoft's Project Natal and Sony's motion control system, Betteridge said,

"Right now our sights are trained on Natal, which is a great opportunity to break new ground with content and gameplay, It’s also an opportunity to exercise some genre evolution, so hopefully we’ll be able to develop something on that front.”

It shouldn't exactly shock anyone that Rare would like to work on a Natal game (after all, it's owned by Microsoft) but hopefully, if Rare does develop a Natal-based shooter, it will rise to the standards set by games like GoldenEye and the Perfect Dark games. In

I have to keep my eye on this one, if they can pull it off right even more people will come to accept Natal.

If any company is going to use Natal, they should do it to improve game and not handicap players into only using it.

"if Rare does develop a Natal-based shooter, it will rise to the standards set by games like GoldenEye and the Perfect Dark games."

If it only has to rise to the level of Perfect Dark Zero... well geez, that's not hard at all.

    @Lucidity
Why such the harsh tone Lucidity? You are being very vulgar in my direction for some reason, when I clearly did not insult you or attack you. Moving beyond your pathetic attempts to discredit me, I am perfectly fine with Natal being "multi faceted". I think thats how it should be. It should be able to use peripherals and buttons etc. But you completely missed the point I was trying to make in response to StPau1y.

You said this "Others games will combine controller and hand movements resulting in more controll than either is capable of producing, even with a keyboard." I did not alter anything you said, it is a direct copy and paste.

Don Mattrick said at E3 "With a breakthrough sensor, that tracks 3D movements and recognizes voices, this is controller free games and entertainment."

MS is advertising Natal as something it really isnt. MS says Natal requires no controllers, nothing more than your body, also meaning no peripherals. Natal in fact does require buttons/controllers/peripheral s for hardcore games like shooters. As a result MS is lying straight to your face, and you sit their and take it like an idle school boy. I would not have a problem with Natal if MS would advertise it for what it really is, nothing more than their version of the Wiimote or Sony Sphere/PS3 eye. MS says its one thing, when in all actuality its quite the opposite. MS claims Natal to be revolutionary, cutting edge, and brand new technology. Heres the thing, its no where near being considered breakthrough technology. The PS2 Eyetoy tracked movements, and now the PS3 Eye tracks movements, recognizes voices, and even detects age based on ones face. Natal technology is early tech from this generation or even later tech from last generation. It has been around for the last few years. Im not trying to slam or flame Natal, its just it bothers me how MS says one thing when its a complete lie.

So really, in your efforts to defend Natal, you destroyed everything Natal stands for the second you said "will combine controller".

So next time you try and prove me wrong, come with something more than "Suck it up princess".

    M'kay pumpkin'?

Natal predictions for all Natal projects: It will suck and we will hate it forever.
If I wanted to spend time and money jumping around and ducking for cover to avoid getting shot at, I'd go play paintball.

Also, maybe I'm behind the times but the last natal demo i saw doesn't seem to be so pin-point accurate that it would recognize when I pull the imaginary trigger with my awesome mime techniques.

Which brings me back to the main point: pantomiming sucks, no controller sucks, natal-everything will suck.

    Hey grunto

I've got some bad news for you.

Natal will be multi faceted and not pigeon holed to your narrow minded interpretation.

Specifically...games akin to the Wii fit, will, unlike the Wii, not require a controller at all.

Others games will combine controller and hand movements resulting in more controll than either is capable of producing, even with a keyboard.

    Suck it up princess.

Well we could be seeing a 5 star game if Rare is truly committed to this new project they have going on.
Cheers Rare if you can make this work

Cant wait to see what Rare cooks up. They've been having trouble winning over the current generation, but those of us who played Banjo, Goldeneye, and Conker back in the day know that Rare has some amazing talent if they can find the right direction to channel it.

Natal is an interesting concept, but I think a hands free shooter will feel retarded to play. Will kinda remind me of that movie Gamer.
