There's only so much you can tell from a trailer, but look at the just-released Prince of Persia: Sands of Time movie trailer.

...and here are my down-and-dirty first impressions:

The Good:

  • The cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton and Ben Kingsley are all excellent actors with large-enough movie star personas to pull off a flick of this scale.
  • The Effects: I'm bored with Hollywood effects -- they're way too perfect to be interesting -- but these look flawless.
  • The Director: Mike Newell is a pro who has been directing since before you were born -- seriously, he has credits that go back to 1964. He'll do a solid job.

The Bad:

  • Video game movies always suck.
  • Video game movies always suck.
  • Video game movies always suck.

What do you think? Is Prince of Persia going to buck the trend for video game movies and actually prove watchable and worthwhile?

At least we didn't get stuck with Micheal Bay.
I trust Jerry B. more than that 4 year old trapped in a old man's body,
ruining my perception of Autobots and Decepticons.

I wasn't expecting much but by god, at least they gave them a decent budget on this one, looked great.

I'm really getting a Van Helsing feel from this, I think it's gonna be good just not super great; hope it does though. I just don't see anything special, like; even cooler than the game. I mean "it would take too much memory for us to put it in game so we put it in this great movie" special film moment, that's not as good as the one you're going to see when you see the film?

So far, I'm digging this trailer.
The effects look amazing and the cast isn't so bad.
I do hope it's really good for me to want to watch it over and over...considering how I love Prince of Persia. Right now, I'm eager to watch this movie.

I just hope the movie trailer didn't give away all the good action scenes, that what usually happens with these movies.

I can't believe no one mentioned that Alfred Molina is in the movie. The best villain so far in a Spider-Man movie (Doc Ock) and an extremely accomplished stage and film actor... sure Ben Kingsley is great, but I think having Molina in it adds another layer of competent acting, especially since Al knows what its like to worth with a high-budget CG film and still have to ACT.

I'm still waiting for my Lost Planet Movie. David Hayter and Avi Arad sounds like a great team up.

I have played to all the prince of persia games, all of them. I'm a HUGE fan of the prince. The story of the first 3 games is very good and worth to be on the big screen.
With that said, i'm not really sure about this, after seing the traler of The Sand of Time, can say if it is a good idea anymore...
I mean, the CGI looks amazing, the feel is exactly like the one in the game, the main idea seems to be respected but i'm not sure about the Jack Gyllenhaal. He looks like he could be the prince, it seems like he could handle the over the top acrobatic of the prince (with the help of cables, blue screen and training), the princess looks fine, the vilain looks good, the plot is ok even though it's not really exactly like the game... I dont know, something is off.

Im very skeptical

OK, video game movies are always crap...UNTIL NOW. Good cast, not familiar with the director, but it's got Disney money behind it and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, who, as far as I'm concerned has never pet out a bad movie. This is the movie that will turn things around for video game movies. Hollywood has finally realized that the stories that go into the games are as good as many hollywood movie scripts and far better then some. In addition, the video game industry has realized that they can't just sell of the movie rights to the first person whos interested, they have to be active partners in maintaining their property across all mediums. The video game industry is beginning to take over TV and movies as the number one form of entertainment, and Hollywood wants a piece of it, so they are now willing to take the time to do it right. I, for one am looking forward to this movie as well as some of the others that are in the works. Avi Arad, who was involved with the X-Men and Spiderman movies currently has Infamous, Lost Planet, Mass Effect and Uncharted in developement. Sam Rami, who directed Spiderman is working on World of Warcraft, and there are others. Only time will tell if Hollywood can finally get it right, but I like the directioin their going in.

Anyone else think that this trailer was kind of long and probably gave away all the best parts of the movie before we even see it? Like it didn't leave anything to be desired.
That's what Disney did with the At Worlds End trailer, and the movie just ended up being a long-winded, overtly complicated version of the trailer.

I'm strangely optimistic about this movie. I never really played the Prince of Persia series, it looked like a movie I would see. I know a lot there is a lot skepticism out, me personally I have no view point either way. Just remember that this movie wasn't made around a release date of Prince of Persia game, at least I'm not aware of any. So it's not just some marketing ploy to try to make an extra buck. The actors in it have quite an impressive resume. I don't know the director but he's been in the industry for some time so hopefully he knows what he's doing.
If we want to see good video game movies we just need to stop Uwe Boll from making his crappy movies. How many video game movies has he made and how many of them sucked? All of them.
This is why I'm optimistic about this is because there is some pretty good talent behind it.

Don't let your preconceptions cloud your judgement on this movie, or any that are coming out. Yes, game movies have sucked, but the hollywood community is starting to respect the force video games have since they alreay have blockbuster money make some already. I am looking forward to dead space the most.
