Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is still a week away from being released, but it's already breaking records. As USA Today reports, the game has set a new pre-order record at mega-retailer GameStop. No official numbers or info on the previous record-holder was released, but I’m waiting to hear back from GameStop. I’ll keep you posted.
Looking ahead to the game’s release, the retailer’s executive vice president for merchandising and marketing, Tony Bartel, also predicts that Modern Warfare 2 will be "the biggest entertainment launch of all time.” The current record holder is Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto IV, which sold 3.6 million copies and brought in $310 million on launch day.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare sold around 2 million copies in its first month of release back in 2007, so it will be interesting to see what kinds of numbers the sequel does, since, basically, it will have to sell around twice as many copies in one day as the previous game sold in its entire first month of release. That would be mighty impressive, but if there was one title this holiday season capable of pulling that off, it would be this one.
Do you think Modern Warfare 2 will break GTA IV’s launch record, and become the biggest entertainment launch ever?

I'm sure the game is going to be good, but really, it's not going to be the second coming of Christ..relax people.

just so everyone knows, I think Fubarx420x may have gotten the game a little early. He clearly wants everyone to know that and I am only trying to help him

I think this will be the biggest video game launch of the year, but I don't think it'll topple GTA4's 1st-day sales. I'm just tired of seeing the game all over the place without being able to play it yet.

Mine says backordered...

Actually the recruiters maybe there but the army isn't that desperate, since the resession army recruitment sky rocketed.
Anyways they probably are looking for home based military nerds who are good at video games and will fly the unmanned planes. They just are hopeing you are so brainwashed that you wont completely realize that the house your bombing actually contains a family in REAL life.
BONERJAM
A highly anticipated multi-platform game priced at $60+. I would find it hard to believe that it wouldn't set sales records.

"dudes with guns"...... enough for me.
Haha nah, i have the game pre-ordered and i may go to the midnight releases, but its not like your required to sign up for the army to get your game. Your able to polity say no thank you, im not interested and carry-on. The army knows that this is a huge release and they are trying to profit off of it by being there and seeing if they can find people who are interested. It never hurts for them to try. To me its like the same thing as when recruiters come to a high school. They are really there to advertise, and if your interested, you go up and talk to then, and if your not, you keep doing what you are doing.

Should have known. This is going to the best game to end 2009 with and begin 2010 with. Cant wait to get it.Oh yeah i wouldn't pick up the game at midnight either if there are recruiters there. Just want my game, ill be pickin that up in the morning.

@ Siwent
If that's true, it's in really bad taste. The army is desperate. It's nothing like it used to be back in our grandparents' day. The majority of those recruited are the screw-ups who barely squeaked by in high school and couldn't do anything with their future besides flipping burgers and making my grilled stuffed buritos.
But I digress...

I know at least my store is up over 700 reserves on it, and other stores in the district are in that area as well...close to 1,000 in huge places like the Providence Place Mall and stuff like that.
As for the Army being at launches...it's something that was tried and frowned upon once in this region (new england) so it won't be done again. I DO think you're overreacting to it Kiwwah, but in order to spice up the midnight release, stores do try and pull stunts like that, to get a military Humvee at the store, or just dudes with guns in general.
TheSiwentKiwwah
If anyone here preordered the game, have you heard anything about US Army recruiters being at the midnight releases? I canceled my preorder of the game when I heard that. I don't think it's an apporpriate place for them to be. As it turns out, war is NOT like a video game--I think they're trying to get people at their weakest to sign up for the military. Maybe I'm overreacting, I'll still get the game--but not at midnight, and not at Gamestop.

Just looking at the NA pre-orders for MW2

That's 2.3m just in NA
LarcenousLaugh
For PC folks, I hope they are at least 170k short of whatever number they are shooting for.
