Dragon Age: Origins Is Finally Here -- What Do You Think So Far?

The "spiritual successor" to Baldur's Gate has been a long time coming, but Dragon Age: Origins is finally here for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. No matter which platform you're checking out BioWare's latest role-playing epic on, our review suggests you'll be in for a good time. I'm still not convinced Dragon Age: Origins is my kind of RPG, but since it's a frickin' BioWare game we're talking about, I'll definitely be booting it up to find out one way or the other.

Did you decide to take a sick day to get a head start on the 60+ hours of holiday gaming? Are you fumbling through the instruction manual at work, waiting for the clock to strike 5:00 pm? Is Steam currently running through the Intertubes to deliver the game to your PC?

Let me know your thoughts on Dragon Age: Origins so far...or describe the painful wait.

I have it for the xbox but i would give all to have it for pc but im affraid for the lagg that always seem to come with these types of game for the pc nowerdays. I think that it becomes a whole diffrent game on the pc and since im a old rpg gamer i think its a better game. The ability to change from "over shouler view" makes the battles more acesseble. On the xbox version i find over and over agina that i cat target enemys with my bows or mages just beacause there are things in the way. Also the index bit is crazy on the console version. Only on my first playthrough but ive given up even reading it anymore.

I cannot believe this game has gotten such a high rating. From the 8 bit music to the annoying AI that can only follow 4 commands... its embarrassing frankly.

15 mins of play for every 2 hours of talking to NPC's.. I am so far not having much fun. Sure your not grinding for gold or quests to collect 3 vials of poison (Wait you do that last one) but, does it have to be so boring.

Bioware released a 4 minute video showing a great battle on a mountain against a lot of mobs and a dragon. After 12 hours of playing, I can hardly believe these characters dress themselves in the morning let alone kill monsters. And gods forbid you pick a mage class, your spells are great at the start but become as powerful as a cigarette lighter after a few hours of play.

Your character is apparently in love with this blood mage, who frankly has about as much development as Elmo and I care so much less about what happens to that jerk than I would a common villager. Believe me, I have tried to be a jerk to this guy but he still thinks I am his brother. I know nothing about him except he was in my face when I passed a test and apparently is my friend.

Oh and don't get me started on the music for the Red Cliff battle. Riffs stolen directly form Hells Kitchen. They should have had Gordon Ramsey as a character in this game, at least I know who he is and can Identify him as a powerful figure. I badmouth a king and he laughs it off. Gordon would tear me a new rear end if I looked at him funny.

AI, wow. If that is what you can call it. You get maybe 4 commands, after 12 hours of play, per character to choose their actions in battle. And with so many combos of behaviours you want your Party to do in a certain situation, the developer basically forgot to program it and makes me program the AI for them. Which works about as well as a pumpkin carving itself on halloween. I put the knife down in front of it and a picture of what I want it to look like but unless the criteria of "can only carve myself if I am set on fire" happens then I have a rotten damn pumpkin after a couple of days of sitting on my counter.

You don't understand that you say? Play the game, and you will. Inept comes to mind. Sure, you can micro manage and pause the game to have each character perform a command similar to a turn based rpg. After 2 hours of blah blah blah with some jerk in a town I can now wait more to do a command that may or may not work. Resisted!

Its like playing a game of chess with Buzz Killington. Each move comes with a 15 minute story and a weird smell.

Graphical presentation is slightly above Never Winter Nights 2. Another game I loathed due to the fact it took away the sandbox style zones and gave you one path to follow. NWN2 along with this game should have been a rail RPG.

Character customization is really a joke. How your character looks plays NO part in how the game works. You can see your character in the talk screens but who cares. No matter how ugly your character is the NPC's will still treat you the same.

I have been playing RPG's for a long long time. From Ultima on the Apple 2e to Final Fantasy and yes NWN1 (Which was a great game). But this game, is NOTHING like how it was presented and is actually a complete FAIL in my opinion. I will play it through but I suggest if you want to try it, steal it. Save your money for Assassins Creed 2 or Borderlands. Yeah, I suggested to steal it. Games should be play tested prior to release not tossed out there because you have an ego the size of your lear jet and don't care about the consumer. Why should anyone spend hard earned money on this tripe. They should play it to create a benchmark for 'how bad a game could be' and improve on it. That way this never happens again.

If I had to give it a rating it would be 1 out of 5. The one is for the cool CGI video released that got me excited. 1 for great marketing. The development team has created a Gigli. Hang your heads in shame.

bout 20 hours of gameplay logged. Action can be few and far between and spend a lot of my time in the equipment menu... but thats what i love! RPGs are the best. Def get your moneys worth with this one. Looks great on the 360. load times aren't as bad as people are making it out to be. Combat took a while to get used to with the sticks compared to the pc but it is challenging enough to be a rewarding experience. Late for work+pissed off girlfriend= Dragon Age: Origins

Got the PC version through Steam a few days ago -1st thoughts are the voice acting and dialog is amazing, these features alone makes the plot(s) so much more intriguing. Im the type of player that blows through character dialog quicker than a kid with ADD gets lost at an amusement park, but this game has me focusing in on even minute details of expendable side-quest fodder NPCs- even the little decisions seem to impact the benefits and consequences i reap in the bigger picture within the story, and rarely do the choices boil down to right or wrong.
Combat seems to need a little more balancing in that it seems to go from mindless hack n slash one encounter then drops you into a heavy tactics requiring fight with little warning, and you'll probly have to back pedal to a previous save to better prepare your party.
So far only 1 crash- which is ALOT better than Mass Effect has done on my rig even post patches.

I want to thank EA for the 25% coupon they emailed me for my b-day. I got the metal box version for my PS3 (tons of included DLC) and it arrived on release day even with me being in Hawaii. All for $58. The game looks great, the console controls take a little getting used to, but work well(Funny how the same "ring" interface concept completely failed in C&C). I agree with the WoW comparisons, but the interactions and story are way better, not to mention the graphics. The stats/talent/skills setup is interesting but again it takes some learning because it is very different from the tradition D&D rules and the manual is a bit on the light side. I'm guessing PC version is top tier, but requires a huge rig to get the best presentation and performance. PS3 and XBox should be pretty much on par with each other, but offer the convenience of couch play (not everyone has a $2K PC hooked to their TV). If you like Western style RPG's, this is a must buy. Absolutely better than sunscreen.

in a word "EPIC"... I bought the red-headed stepchild version(ps3). I'm only 8 hours in but, it is an amazing game and it really does stick out in this sea of excellent games that just keep coming out... im not complaining that's just my wallet and friends talking. I did fork over the 35 buck for the collectors edition book but, i haven't even opened it yet i have been to busy getting Khilljoy83, my elf-warrior grey warden, as bloody as bioware-ly possible. i still haven't figured out how to find/use shale(dlc) but, i am sure it will be worth it when i do...

Got it for the PC through steam. My PC rocks so the graphic look great. It took freaking forever to download the extra stuff you got if you pre-order the deluxe ed and bought it off of steam.
Still it is a blast to play.

Lucidity does it suck that your console is the worst of this generation? I mean there is nothing going for the Xbox 360. Losing services, no real games, pathetic fail rates, etc. Just man up and do what the rest of the world is doing and play PS3

Played for a little over four hours last night and was completely blown away. The character interactions are definitely my favorite part. I didn't think it would be possible to do any better than Mass Effect, but it's so well done. Light years ahead of classics like KotOR.

@adenrin13: Is there an option to do a full install to the hard drive? I have the 360 version, so I'm not sure, but older Bioware games had an option for a full install (you only needed one disc for verification) that sped things up immeasurably.

This game has made me realize I have no gift for strategy, but the plot is keeping me going. Played for about 4 hours straight and it only felt like 20min. That's how I know it's a good game.

I am playing the PC version.

    Holy load times, Batman.

Good game, but the load times are taking so long that it makes it seem like something is wrong and they are very, very frequent...

For the Xbot who keeps talking about Eurogamer, yeah you do know that Eurogamer is the laughing stock of the gamer community and everything they do is just OPINIONS. Not to mention they are xbots who were saying that HD DVD was going to beat Blu Ray
