Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is quickly gaining pre-release notoriety as a center of controversy. First, there was the "No dedicated servers for PC users" flap (although, truth be told, that's more of an inside-gamer thing, not likely to be of interest to the larger culture), then the leaked video that showed that, for at least one level, you inhabit the body of someone taking part in a terroristic bloodbath in an airport. Today, there's a "viral" style promo video for Modern Warfare 2 that is, at best, in questionable taste.
The video was posted on YouTube over the weekend and stars a digitized version of Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels delivering a mock-PSA about "grenade spam." The ad ends with the phrase "random grenades are for p*ssies." It is followed with a credit message saying the PSA was brought to you by "Fight Against Grenade Spam." You can figure out why the fake organization's name is offensive for yourself.
Infinity Ward pulled the video, and community Manager Robert Bowling tweeted that the ad was "more of a social commentary joke of that stereotype than it was a fist-bump of acceptance to it." Right. So Infinity Ward says it was just mocking the people who hold homophobic views as opposed to actually being homophobic... except I've seen the video, and there's nothing in it to indicate this is the case.
Usually, I leave the soapbox to Adam Sessler, but this time, I'm going to weigh in by pointing out that I spent the weekend playing The Ballad of Gay Tony and was pleased and surprised by the positive relationship between Luis Lopez and Gay Tony, and the respect shown to the homosexual community as a whole in that game, so this Modern Warfare 2 thing is doubly disappointing in contrast -- shouldn't we be past this kind of casual, backyard slur in the game community? If not from the players, at least from the professionals? Judging from the discourse on public channels of the last COD, Infinity Ward should are the last people who should be encouraging slurs against gay people; there's enough of it without the company's tacit approval. Besides, isn't that a violation of their own Terms of Service?
Sessler and I have much the same views on this kind of thing; check it out:

People are idiots...in general. Was there really no other gaming news that everyone has to be up in arms over the COD video? Did anyone ever bother to ask the gays if they were insulted by the "Fight Against Grenade Spam" video? I believe there was a post by someone who is gay stating that they were completely not offended by the video, as I'm sure the majority of homosexual people are. And, honestly now, how many offensive jokes have been told in GTA games? Im sure hookers object to a video game that allows you to beat them with a bat, and I know for a fact that cops object to a game that encourages nearly every commitable felony in existence. GTA is not a good game to bring up when talking about community relations.

You are so correct soulself but you forget in Obama's America you cant make fun of gays but you can make fun of anyone else.
Soulself
Umm, can't we just grow a pair and not get all uptight about EVERYTHING these days. Take it in which the spirit it was given. I think anyone who plays COD gets pissed at that random grenade and says allot worse things than F3G

Obama's whithouse and nation trying to censor the country, you got to love it.

Please i am waiting for someone from G4 to explain the hypocrisy of their site and their tv shows. Just so everyone knows according to g4 you can make fun of fat people, straight people, men, whites, christians, republicans, nerds, noobs, etc. but you cannot make fun of gays, women, liberals, or any other whining minority.

@Stephen Johnson:
"So Infinity Ward says it was just mocking the people who hold homophobic views as opposed to actually being homophobic... except I've seen the video, and there's nothing in it to indicate this is the case."
There are a number of elements in this video that indicate a mocking tone, an element of social commentary. This begins when the video opens from the perspective of a player. That player's profile pic has the words "Blunt Trauma" surrounded by pot leafs and his handle/tag is "Meewah420." Could this possibly be a caricature of teen players who think that "fronting" weed makes them cool? I've never run into any of them online /sarcasm
And then there's this idea that IW is using the slur against homosexuals. If you pay a little attention you'll see that the person speaking is against grenade spamming. The acronym stands for Fight Against Grenade Spam. So the guy giving the PSA, presumably from the perspective of IW, would therefore be a member of this organization. In other words, he himself would be one of the (insert racial slur). How does calling themselves that make them homophobic? It seemed rather clear to me they were ridiculing those who use that term online.
I understand most people who saw this video watched it only once and not looking for any deeper meaning, any hints that this could be some kind of joke or social commentary. They are a casual audience who watched a trailer/ad, deep thinking or thinking at all is not usually required. You, Mr. Johnson, are a reporter even if it is on a blog about video games. You are given an elevated voice in the community, a chance to define discussions and set their tone. You are expected to watch a video multiple times, too look at the smaller details and try to see all sides of an issue, especially if you're going to be opinionated about that issue in an article.
I'm not trying to say that using the acronym was a good idea. Obviously they weren't able to objectively look at the ad and see how it could easily be misinterpreted. The fact that so many people have done so is proof that it can be. Removing the video was the right decision. None of that excuses you from trying to see from their point of view, of trying to see how it could have been a very poor attempt at social commentary. We have more than enough people who are happy to respond to things like this in an inflammatory way on both sides, there's no need for professionals to fan these fires by failing to do their research, which is in fact their job.
I'm sorry this is so critical, I have no issue with you as a person and in the past I've very much enjoyed your work. I see this as a mistake you made. Maybe I'm blowing it out of proportion to the actual issue. If so I'm sorry. I tend to look to people like Adam Sessler as leaders for our community. That includes the authors here by extension. I expect you guys to be unbiased, or at least mostly so. This feels to me like you watched the video once and made up your mind about it without trying to see things form IW's side. Maybe I'm wrong about that too but that's certainly how it comes across from here.
In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with saying IW messed up, that they released something that was insensitive. They've acknowledged that by taking down the video. Saying that IW is intentionally encouraging slurs against homosexuals is the kind of move I expect from the comments section, not the staff. It's entirely possible to criticize the release of the video without accusing Infinity Ward of bigotry.

It really is a true shame that this is what is becoming of the video game demographic. I didn't read too many comments before posting this so forgive me if i restate a previous comment. I feel almost as strongly about this growing problem. It causes problems in more ways than one and if you're someone who doesn't see a single dilema branching from this than take a second and think about this. Are you annoyed by the constant barrage on video games by political leaders? Sick of hearing them try to ban more and more violent video games. maybe there is an approaching problem of virtual to reality violence but just because you aren't apart of the homicides doesn't mean you aren't being affected by the violent video games. consider this, when you get into a competitive match in an FPS (more often than not the violent games politics complain about) do you get into it? if you get killed for what you believe to be unfair advantages or a glitch or what have you, i'm more than positive it's the younger demographic of gamers that go nuts. they start yelling or screaming maybe even crying (if so than see a therapist please!) i get into my competitive games too, i swear, sure, but i keep it at an appropriate level (if swearing is ever appropriate) i don't call someone who got a legitimate kill on me a homophobic word and i stay far from the racial terms because i have been subjected to racial slurs and racism all through out my grade school years. True i could easily get away with it but what's the point? there isn't one. words can have an adverse affect whether you want to believe it or not. maybe you aren't hurting anyones feelings but there is the strong, oh so likely possibility that your disgusting words influence the young minds that are playing in the same match as you. than they do it and it becomes a verbal disease being spread through out the world. I agreed strongly with you Adam and i especially enjoyed the way you ended that soap box video but you have to know by now that there isn't a single thing you could say to change the younger and dumber population of people playing our games and saying those things. they seem to be easily influenced by so much but the righteous things in this world. integrity and honor is lost and so is decent humanity. kids are swearing and homophobic and i could get into the many other problems kids are faced with outside of gaming related material but i'd be rambling much like i alraedy am. I'll wrap this up, it's a problem, there isn't anything we can do unfortunately, but if there is some day a way to stop it, it needs to be started asap, games are already getting such terrible notoriety and this crap isn't helping. i hope to still be playing hardcore gamer games when i get older and i will be incredibly pissed if these immature kids ruin it for all of us.
meholt09
i totally agree with u Adam. I cant stand going over my friends house to play halo 3 or Gow2 and all of these kids who sound like there balls havent dropped yet r yelling at the top of there voice the n word. like i get so turned off i leave the match. I love that i dont have a big problem like this on my PS3. there many less 10 year old kids saying offensive things that they dont even understand what they are really saying.
ryZe
god forbid they make a funny video. seriously where i come from (southern california) everyone uses the word f*g or f*ggot as a word that doesn't usually literally mean homosexual. like say if i killed them in cod4 they'd be like "aw you little f*ggot" it's a joke. and if this was brought against Christians you'd find it hilarious but now that it pertains to homosexuals you get a little pissy.. fail.
GreenAphid
The in-game chat is offensive no doubt. But this is fickle and hardly an issue.
asudevil2
Okay G4 you cannot complain about the use of the F word until you stop making fun of Christians, Republicans, Fat people, nongamers, nerds, noobs, etc. God i have never seen such a bigger group of hypocrites. "Oh it is so wrong to make fun of gays but lets go make fun of republicans or fat people." How about you guys stop swearing before you complain about swear words? POT MEET KETTLE.
Project_JW
The root of the problem is not if the video is offensive or not, its the fact that the new generation of gamers, as mentioned earlier, have this "stereotype" of how to be cool or "bad-ass". This problems not only is affecting Xbox Live but all types of online expiriences today. So, this video could have being a social commentary joke and not an offensive ad, but that new generation (basically those kids hiding behind a tv and shooting trash at other players without even knowing the meaning), will see this as an approval of their behavior, even if it is not. Still, I do not believe this was done with a harmfull purpose by the developers.

Well I was planning to get modern warfare 2 on the PC but Im starting to reconsider. Infinity ward is trying way to hard to get noticed and its just starting to become pathetic. I mean I could handle the no dedicated servers, and the $60 pc price tag even though every other pc game is $50. Then the terrorist scene pops up, which goes to far in my opinion and to top it off they make an offensive commercial. I mean I could at least understand where they were coming from with the terrorist scene, its all about getting that reaction, but whats the point of making a commercial that pokes fun at homosexuals? is it really necessary or are they just "trying to get a reaction". *sigh* I was really looking forward to this game, but it seems every week they do something new to disappoint me. I really hope this commercial is just being taken out of context otherwise that's just poor taste on IW's part.
IceCold138
lol buddy seriously.
you actually take those insults seriously??
there are more offensive words in MOST of the music we listen to today.
i think you people (implied slur, figure it out yourself) just look for anything and everything to complain about.
im not gonna lie, its really annoying when some 12 year old kid is dropping an f-bomb every second but hey TWO WORDS:
MUTE...BUTTON...
now please start complaining about real issues like the "War on Terrorism" or the economic recession were in and not what some angry 10 year old said.
done
Ice, out.

While I agree with Adam, I have three things to say on the subject that differ:
1) The First Amendment doesn't exist on Xbox Live. Sorry, but it doesn't. The First Amendment only stops the government from restricting your speech - not MS. The only reason you can say those awful slurs is because there is no way to stop you in real time. If the First Amendment applied, you would be able to post them as well.
2) While I think those slurs are horrible, our culture as a whole has become way too sensitive. I mean, really? The problem with the video is the possible connotation of the ACRONYM of something? The guy in the video uses at least two curse words flat out. If IW really wanted to use the gay slur, they could have. I find it far more likely that they really were wanting to "Fight Against Grenade Spam", and you read into it too much - like Arnold's letter to the California lawmakers that, when acronymed, could spell "F you". All those words are common - and I've even used the phrase - as in, "I wish there was some way to fight against this stupid grenade spam." Is that a gay slur? Of course not - there are different letters in there. So it can't POSSIBLY be one. But without the word stupid, it could be? Honestly, when the article said "You can find out why the fake title is offensive for yourself" I couldn't figure it out. It took me a good amount of time to see what he was getting at. Didn't even notice it in the video, which I watched multiple times to figure out what the "controversy" was. Why? Because I don't LOOK FOR offensive stuff.
3) Even if it is offensive, so what? If you are offended, write a letter to IW. Boycott the game. Don't just whine about it on the internet. And as AmericanGrizzly posted here, there really wasn't anything to be offended by. It was just a coincidence.
BrockymanTM
Even if they meant it that way, who really cares? Quit letting a stupid video game commercial get your undies in a bunch... be grown up men and women for God's sake!!!
BrockymanTM
Honestly, ya'll are going WAY OVERBOARD! Go to the Escapist (escapistmagazine.com) and watch Yahtzee's Zero Punctuation review of "50 Cent Blood On the Sand. He makes the point much better then I can. His is more so about knee jerk reactions about racism, but his point that a truly tolerant society can make fun and laugh at everyone else without every getting so bloody offended every single time something comes up.
An do you writing the article, if this was a Christian group getting ticked off about some sexual or graphic content that offends them, you'd be bashing them like a pinata....
RogPD
haha nice..adam said it straight up like a real mother fk'n G' hahaha

Uh oh, call the PC police, everyone is a racist homophobe bigot nazi.

From my experience on the PSN with COD4, i only have a few remarks about me being asian, my clan tag is [iAzn]. When its usually individual players with mics they dont really seem to talk much besides tell where the enemies are at and say bad words when they get killed. The people that really trash talk are the people that play in a room with there clan. Then the words start flying back and forth and your momma this and you momma that. I think it's lame when they start with homophobic and racial slurs.
