The Time I Turned A Game Off Because It Scared The Hell Out Of Me

October is my favorite month of the year, if only because it becomes more acceptable to watch a horror movie every night of the week -- or so I tell myself, anyway. You would also be spot-on guessing that most horror video games cross my desk, too, even the bad ones. Just like the movies, there aren't many good horror video games, with most relying on cheap tactics like loud noises and windows smashing. There's no subtley and little attempt to get your skin crawling.

It's pretty common for folks to quickly point towards the Silent Hill series for genuine scares, but if you haven't played the download-only PlayStation Network episodic horror series Siren: Blood Curse, you've been missing out. Siren: Blood Curse produced the only time I actually turned a video game off because the tension became so physically exhausting it became too much. I snapped.

What happens on the screen in a horror movie or game is certainly important, but audio is such a hidden, typically ignored facet of the experience. Siren: Blood Curse features some of the best sound work in a horror game that every time I paused to head to the bathroom, my apartment's squeaky boards, the yell of a stumbling crackhead from the street below or the tiny, usually insignificant movement of a hallway door caused by the wind had me reaching to switch the lights on.

Eventually, I'd had enough. There was no specific moment that pushed me over the edge in Siren: Blood Curse. Everything about the game is unnerving. You should experience it yourself.

how come NOONE talked about the first FEAR, i can can agree FEAR-Files was horrible, and FEAR 2 just was okay, but the first one on the xbox/ps3 scared the shizah outta me. yeah they came out on the computer first but i never bothered. So many parts in that game had me pausing and going for a quick cig, and i actually almost turned the game off in the end. still one of the greatest horror games to date, and under rated like a mother f-er

DeadSpace not too scary, here and there maybe a little jump but eh...still and amazing game

Condemned 1 and 2 were pretty scary but not to much, i really hated that F-ING bear, just got the adrenaline going a bit though.

Silent Hill were pretty damn scary, and always fun, same withe clocktower (even though they were cheesy...)

Resident Evil games are always fun but never a scare, you all are trippin...well maybe thatss why its scary haha :D

I played the Siren: Blood Curse demo when it first came out for the ps3, and i was not impressed at all

If you love horror games the best are always the psychological horrors, not the action.....we need some more, monolith is the leader in my opinion.

Ok i am going old school here and bringing up the first Resident Evil. i was younge and used my birthday money to rent a Playstation from the local video store and rented Resident Evil too... i got as far as the zombie munching on the guys head in the hallway. you know where its a close up of his face as he turns and then the head drops down and your left standing there with it a foot away from you. I literally screamed, turned the system off and didnt play the game again untill the second one was coming out.

There's an older PC game called "Body of Evidence" that was packaged as real evidence. It's a multimedia experience. You go looking for this serial killer, and after you start playing, you begin getting IM's and emails from the "Killer". What was so freaky about it, was that after I stopped playing the game, and deleted my account with it, the emails and IM's kept coming.... really tripped me out.

Bioshock is pretty scary at times. I've never actually turned off my console because im scared, although a couple nights ago, I did have to stop playing Fallout 3 for like 10 minutes because it scared me. Smoked 2 cigarettes, and chugged a beer, then started playing again.

I know I am way late but Dead Space was one game where I played Alone in my loft with all the lights off. This scared the jesus out of me (hence I am now an atheist and am going to hell, or purgatory, or with 72 Virgins... or nothing will happen... I guess it all depends)

Anyway there were several times where I had to turn off the game because I was just so freaked out by it. And I know for some reason people really dislike Dead Space, which I find funny, because I myself don't like Resident Evil Games, yet apparently everyone else does.

I get into video games, I really do, I like to try and submerge myself into that game (if it's good enough) and get a full 60 Dollars worth of my game. So to me Dead Space, which seems more 'passable then resident evil and silent hill's monsters. So creeping around a dead ship, using only the flash lights on my weapon to see in alot of the game, just put me in a creeped out mood that when a splicer (or splitter? or is it cutter) charged me after dropping from the ceiling, yeah I freak out.

I'm not saying that Dead Space is a home run, but for me it was. Other games do have their scary parts, for example tomb raider (when I was younger) would scare me because of the booby traps while I traced through ancient tombs, and GTA San Andreas scared me when I flew my bike off the mountain and really for a moment felt like I was falling.

Movies don't scare me a whole lot (then again the only thing scary about movies these days is that they all rely on the cheap trick of blaring loud music that scares you. instead of actually trying to be creative) But I guess with Video Games, since I feel I have a personal interest in the character (and I don't want to die) are more easily getting my 'goat'

Run Like Hell was a pretty scary game for me the first time I played it as well, I think I was... 17 maybe on the PS2. Again creatures coming from the ceiling and me searching for my beloved Samantha, I felt like I was the main character. Infact I think Run Like Hell should be made into a movie.

Anyway, as a disclosure, I believe (and have never verified) that 'Run Like Hell' and 'Dead Space' are the Same Game.

The story lines are a little different with setting and alien races, but there is ALOT of similarities that makes me thing that Dead Space has to be the 'Next Gen' Version of RLH.

I know I rambled, but... Well, That's it.

Doom 3. The Fact that as soon as you think you got everything dead, some bugger jumps out of a vent or out of a wall and eats yo' face was freaking crazy! I was playing on god mode 100% of the time but the darkness combined with the realistic flashlight effects was still too much.

One of my friends was scared of Bioshock also. But Condemned I had to turn off, and I was playing in the middle of the day with my dad in the next room. That game scared the living hell outta me.

Yo..I knew the end of Dead Space was coming...I put the controller down and stepped away from the screen and I still jumped...best game of the genre in my opinion.
