A recently leaked scene from Infinity Ward’s upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 depicting players (SPOILER ALERT) playing as terrorists has sparked some rather heated discussions since it appeared earlier in the week. (The above video was the original teaser trailer for the game, and it clearly features the audio portion of the scene in question.) Shockingly, the Australian Council on Children have called for the game’s MA-15+ rating to be re-reviewed, Game Politics reports.
“The consequences of terrorism are just abhorrent in our community,” the groups’ president Jane Roberts told The Age, “and yet here we are with a product that's meant to be passed off as a leisure time activity, actually promoting what most world leaders speak out publicly against. We understand that it's a game but ... we're not far off when you look at the images that you could actually put it on a Channel Nine news report and you'd think maybe that is real.”
Australia’s most open-minded attorney general, Michael Atkinson (who has single-handedly held back the approval of a R18+ for video games in the country), astutely and reasonably observed, “Expecting game designers to be responsible by not glorifying terrorism will always lead to disappointment.”
On the non-loony side of the coin is spokesman for the lobby group Electronic Frontiers Australia, Nicholas Suzor, said, “Films often show the villain's perspective and, by doing that, they get across the character's story and the heinous nature of people who carry out atrocities. Games, too, are becoming more expressive, and are telling more involved stories.”
What’s interesting about all of this is that if the board stands by its R15+ rating for the game, that means either it sees no issue with the controversial scene, or the board didn’t see the scene before it made its decision about the rating. Either way, as a Classification Board spokesman explained, the board isn’t able to review its own decision, so a formal application to Board will be required if a re-review were to occur.
Even more fascinating is that one of the main reasons the Australian ratings board forced Valve to make significant cuts to Left 4 Dead 2 in order to avoid the game being banned was that the zombies looked too human. So apparently, (SPOILER ALERT) mowing down 100 percent human civilians in MW2 is fine, but mowing down zombified humans is too disturbing? Here’s a new slogan I’m trying out: Australia’s stance on creative expression - Not Making Sense Since Ever.

Yes it does suck being an Australian gamer sometimes, i will have to import this now, so i don't get a watered down version (or it's banned). And it's all down to one right-wing bible thumping D-bag Michael Atkinson. For those of you in the USA to give you an idea, imagine if Jack Thompson had the last say over what games did and didn't get realesed and there was nothing you could do about it because he was appointed by the government and not elected...

I heard about the leak over the web I think a little bit after it first hit. It was like wildfire. Nothing was going to stop it from being put up all over the place. There will always be something that makes people turn away from something. Take it this way..even games like Batman just did a play where you can play as the Joker. Taking out guards. So I'm wondering..why is it okay to play as the villian in Batman..and get away without so much as its cool. Yet the moment you become something more real and that hits home. It becomes a horrible thing. There are two sides to everything..I think it will be intresting to see how it would be through another eyes. We play games where normal folks get in the way and we try to save. Sometimes not to well. It happens.

Can I please just state for the record, we Aussie's are not all like Micheal Atkinson, the guys responsible for preventing our freedom of speech and expression in the form of digital media.
Instead he, and his supporters, have just given us good reason to spend our Australian dollars overseas to import the games that are prevented from being shown/played in their completed capacity here.
I for one will definately spend my money on LFD2 and MWF:2 in the UK if they are to be released here in a cut down form to suite the archaic standard of this countries ratings system.
So way to go for making it worth us spending our money in our own country.

Who cares? Like seriously Anti-Gaming activist and Australia are both EPIC FAILS.
It must suck to be a gamer in Aussie, unless you just play the Wii.

The second I heard about this leaked footage, I knew Australia would do something like this.

Is it bad that the reviewers didn't notice it the first time through? I mean come on, the game notifies you when you're going to do the terrorist level. It's like not noticing a 500 pound gorilla in the room.
I just feel the need to bring it how bizarre it is that Aussies are so worried about games having some sort of objectionable content in them, yet it's thanks to those giant island people that we had Steve Irwin, or a Heath Ledger Joker (who cut people's faces open).

Seriously? Is there that much of a gaming market in Australia? They're why Fallout 3 got censored. Honestly, who cares what they want. Compromising the integrity of your work for one small portion of your demographic is pathetic.

F Infinity Ward! Killing my people...

They're talking almost an Edgar Allan Poe, romanticism approach to video games, and use them to not only provide entertainment, but to elicit emotions from their audience. And their doing that by depicting one of the darkest and brutal aspects of today. This is the way games are starting to go now. Most players, want more than just a game to play, they (me included) want a game that gets them sucked in the universe of the story. Some of my favorite games are the ones that have moments that actually touch me. 2 examples would be Gears of War 2 when Dom has to "relieve" his wife of her suffering and CoD 4 when you play as the president of a middle eastern country, get tied to a pole and shot in the face and the entire way there while watch your people get slaughtered by terrorists.

I'd like to change gears a little and if anyone would like to join, then please.
I was wondering your guys' thoughts on why Infinity Ward would include something like this in the game. ACC's Jane Roberts says it promotes terrorism - whether she meant advocating it, I don't know. However, my opinion is that Infinity Ward did this in order to speak out against it by showing it's savagery, brutality and inhumanity. Is the manner in which they did so horrific? Yes, but so is the nature of terrorism.

God I hate other people and their children. I always have to be held responsible for other peoples doom-spawn. I can't enjoy anything without someone trying to make sure I can't enjoy it because they are afraid their children might see it. Over protective morons. Australian Council on Children sounds like a group designed for whiny a-holes. Really? A council on children? Anytime someone wants me to "think of the children" I immediately lose respect for said person.

"Not making sense since ever" Ya know I like it.

It's strange how some, when thinking of entertainment, leave out video games. It is well studied that the most common age of people that play video games is around 25 years old. So with that data we can deduce that video games are an industry that is viable for a mature audience.
I understand the parents crying foul on mature games but those are mute points. You are responsible for your children, not the world. I'm sure most parents do not like other people telling them how to raise there own children.
Besides I don't hear any big out cries when minors by cigarettes and alcohol. Which happens everyday.
Canid117
Don't you get shot in the face after playing as the terrorist? I don't think that getting executed for acting like a dick glorifies terrorism but I'm sadly not the one in power.
sukTHEfacc
no matter what ppl think, it's free speech. tv shows and movies do stuff like this all time, for the sake of drama, so wtf is so different about video games?
facists bastards controlling what u can and cant watch. this worl is sick. maybe if there was no terrorism in the first place, scenes like this wouldnt be made.

The difference between L4D 60% Human and CODMW2 100% human is gallons of blood, brains and bones with appendages being torn and shot off. COD has always been a relatively realistic but clean shooter whereas L4D has extremely depictive violence. Its really not that big of an issue and is redundant to compare the two games.
