PlayStation 3's Home No Longer A Business Priority For Sony

Home is still important to the PlayStation 3, but it's no longer a business priority for Sony, according to an Edge Online report from the London Games Conference.

When former Sony executive Phil Harrison revealed Home and LittleBigPlanet for the first time years back, both were heralded as flashy "Game 3.0" initiatives, advancements in how we think about games and interacting with games that would change the landscape forever.

"It’s been a long road," said Home director Pete Edwards at the conference. "We've proved there is a market out there and we’ve got a lot of people that spend a lot of time in [Home]. It’s not a priority right now but there is a business model there."

I haven't booted up Home since it went into open beta. What about you?

It's not a game and there's nothing to do. It's a glorified chatroom. I can chat through AIM so this has little use other than to fill up HDD space. I don't have the faintest idea why these sim-anything games sell or get used.

For those of you who haven't gone back into Home lately, its pretty astounding how many new game Spaces are up there now!

Home is a great feature on the PS3. Between the mini-games, collecting free stuff, and exploring, its definitely worth the time.

Its a definitely win-win in my book.

I would also like to mention to everyone, that Home has not been a wast of time or money for Sony. It has made a butt load of cash and is run by it's own department controlled by Sony, like any other game is. I don't get why so many people get it in there heads that their is 1 Sony, 1Microsoft, or 1Nintendo. That's not how it works, there are different departments created and they are funded whoever the bigger dogs are. If somethings a failure the department gets cut. This is not the case with Home. Home has actually grown to be pretty big and I would argue is probably self sustainable by now. BTW big event Tomorrow on Home, Zombies vs. Humans. See undeadyourself.com for more info.

I actually had to register to this site because NONE of you know what the fark your talking about. Home has come leaps and bounds from where it was when it launched as public beta and for those of you who think no one uses it, tell that to the hundreds of thousands of people on their daily. Home is an awesome application for a gaming community and it gets better all the time. Home now supports universal game launching from anywhere within home, their are like 20 FREE mini games scattered all through out it (bowling, pool, poker, racing, triple A title mini games for resistance, infamous, uncharted, etc...) their is a lot more FREE items available now in the mall, as a reward for playing mini games, or unlocked from purchasing an actual game like the batcave just for popping in the batman game. their are gaming launching vents for specific game comunnities to get together and discuss their favorite game before launching into matches with one another. the movie theater has 10 screening rooms. they had Xi a little while back (if you need to know what that is look it up) and that was really fun and required a lot of comunication with our fellas over in europe on the us and eu forums. their are event spaces for the likes of E3 and other game related events where again not only are you watching the event, but can also communicate with other games who are watching the exact same thing you are (a lot easier then running over to the forums and chating it up with your fellow gamers) also home is for EVERYONE so just because you don't think it necessary to change your avatars wardrobe doesn't mean that some female gamer wouldn't love to do that, and they do it all the freaking time. Home is a great app and has delievered in a short time a lot of what it promised in the beginnig (yes it has, you need to remember its a free service and no they do not take away sony's resources for other things to put into home. home is it's own seperate thing that doesn't affect psn or the ps store in any way.) their are only 4 things home doesn't have that it promised...tvs, stereos, trophies for games (they have trophies for in-home mini games), and re-activating voice chat (which was taken down because people abused the fark out of it forcing sony to rethink a more proper implimentation of it, but at least to can still talk to people on your friends list with a headset). you can expect to see most of (if not all of that) by the end of next year, on top of all the stuff they add in between. you all need to quite complaining about something you know NOTHING about (seeing as how everyone who commented on here has only been into home ONCE) go into home go to your favorite games home space and chat it up with the folks their, ask questions, explore a little. then when you've seen and done everything come back here and complain, atleast then you'll know exactly what your complaining about! have fun sucking off MS and playing your crapbox, I'm going to go enjoy my TRUE next gen console (guess it would be current gen at this point huh) and just so all you fanboys out their don't freak out and loose your head I'm only on sony's side because right now they are the best on the market and have been since the original playstation. if some other company (not mircosoft) comes out with a TRUELY superior game console then I will totally get that instead, I go where quality and innnovation are. can't wait to see home 2 years from now when it's BOOMING!, gonna be good times.

I'm still waiting for the trophy implementation. What's the point in earning all these trophies if I can't show them off on Home?

Sony wasted a lot of money and time with this. It has been plagued from the start and should have focused on other ways of communication.

Sony just couldn't figure out how to nickel and dime their gamers like microsoft does.

I think Home is a perfect combination of a chat room and a shopping mall... which are my two least favorite places to be.

Well, I use my PS3 for games. If I'd want to hang out, I've got the rest of the world for that.

Although it wasn't as successful as Sony wanted, I wouldn't deem it a failure. A positive thing is that it is already made and it has a lot of potential. Hopefully at some later time, they'll develop a more enjoyable experience and better uses for it.

LOL. They touted this Home crap soo hard before it launched, saying it was gonna revolutionize gaming...and now they try and act like it was just some extra thing. B.S.! If Nintendo can admit that their sales are plummeting due to a lack of quality games, Sony should be able to admit that they were 5 years late on the virtual world party that bombed soon after its inception; i.e. SecondLife.

A clever person would have looked at the SecondLife debacle and quickly decided to move in another direction.

IMHO, it never seemed like a 'business priority', but that's my opinion.
You don't have to look real hard to see why they aren't focused on it.
I'm sure the 'mico-transactions' they were hoping for pretty much evaporated with the
economic problems. After all playing 'dress up' with an online avatar is nothing more than
conspicuous consumption. Maybe when everyone has money to throw away it'll get more attention.

I'm glad actually. Although I never used it I don't have time to waste on non-games. Sony needs to focus on the gaming qualities of the PS3 and not the gimmicks. That's what kept them in front the last 2 gens. They've already cut the Linux and memory card slots which was good. Nobody used them. Now if we could only get rid of the pictures, music, and internet browsing functions (save them for PC) and get rid of the stupid movie player we'd be set. Oh, the updates have to go too, they're useless and too frequent. They're the reason I haven't been online in months. Foolish mistake Sony...

I got turned off by the lack of initial avatar options and an update that corrupted my hard drive and forced me to reformat my PS3.

    Good thing I had a month-old backup!

I've always thought it'd be interesting if you could have Home boot up by default when you turned on your PS3. I might explore it more often that way. It'd just be an option, obviously.
