PlayStation 3 Slim Not Backwards Compatible With PlayStation 2 Games

Happy birthday to the PlayStation 2. The undisputed champion of the last console war has turned nine years old today -- ancient, by video game standards.

According to Sony, one in every three U.S. households own a PlayStation 2, and nearly 140 million people around the world enjoy the system, making it among the most successful game systems ever.  Plus, they're still making games for it!  In case you missed the last decade, you can still pick up a PS2 Slim for only $99. Bonus: you'll be able to get older PlayStation 2 games for crazy cheap through used game retailers everywhere. There are currently over 10,000 titles available for the system.

I'm not the nostalgic type when it comes to older game systems, so my PS2 is currently on the top shelf of my closet, awaiting that fateful day when I either throw it out or bring it to a thrift store. What about you? Are you still rocking you PlayStation 2? What's the best game for the system, overall?

So many great PS2 titles, i enjoyed many of the smackdown games, GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas. FFX, Slugfest 03, NHL 03, Star Wars Battlefront 1 and 2, Star Wars Episode 3 where all fun games, i still have them all and thanks to my 60 gb ps3, i can play them whenever i'm feling old school, still keeping my eyes peeled for the original Shadow Hearts game, i really liked it from what i played can't find a copy in stores though and buying it online is too much.

My PS2 is still going strong, although it has passed onto my 6 year old daughter who probably runs that thing 40 hours a week. I thought it would've been alot older than nine years though. I guess that's about right. Now rocking a PS3.

I remember getting it for christmas and getting Ace Combat 04 and Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legends...I still play both; and even though I have a backwards-compatible PS3; I have my second PS2 (first one had a laser problem; this one is the slim model) .....haha I use it for DDR...

My PS2 (01Fatty) was soaked in soda, with out me knowing....so it dried up in there. I found out when I tried to open the disk drive and the thing was cemented shut...Someone just cleaned the exterior.

I opened it up, and had to scrub the syrup off the all the little gears, rubber band, and even the lens with rubbing alcohol....slapped it back together...still works like a champ.

GTA:SA is still the best in the series.

The Generation that brought the Gamecube, XBox, Dreamcast, and PS2 could be looked at as the most significant from an industry standpoint. It was a fork in the road so to speak. It brought a new player to the game (Microsoft) and put another one out of the game (SEGA). Nintendo hung around there with the GameCube I feel mainly due to its name. The PS2 brought DVD's into people's homes. It helped to kill the VHS format. For many it was their first DVD player. The XBox came in to the picture strong putting up a good fight. I feel its lack of DVD support hurt this console. Today developers are still developing games for the PS2 and Sony is still selling systems. I don't recall any of the other systems with that kind of shelf life. I think there is a reason for it, Sony just did a great job all around with that system. They nailed it. Marketing the system, game catalog, DVD, backwards compatible with PS1 games...it all just worked. I think the PS2 is the best and most significant console thus far. The current generation of consoles obviously still need to play out.
