Footage from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 leaked onto the Internet yesterday, and if you thought the lack of dedicated PC servers were the big controversy in regards to this game, you're in for a huge surprise. The leaked gameplay footage reveals that you'll be able to play part of the game as a terrorist.
Update: The footage has been pulled from CNN's iReport site as well.
Heavy spoilers ahead, obviously. The footage has since been pulled from YouTube, but part of it is still up on CNN's iReport site. In the level (reportedly the beginning of the game), the player is with a group of men who murder innocent civilians in an airport. The level seems to consist primarily of capping innocent people, including the clearly injured who are trying in vain to hobble away as you shoot them in the back. This is where CNN's video ends. Based on other internet reports, after the airport killing spree, the group then exit to the tarmac where they pass a pile of dead bodies, and shoot some cops. Eventually, the main terrorist, Makarov, murders the player with a shot to the head. It's strong stuff.
When asked if the footage would be in the game, Activision released a statement to the press, saying:
“Yes it is. The scene establishes the depth of evil and the cold bloodedness of a rogue Russian villain and his unit. By establishing that evil, it adds to the urgency of the player’s mission to stop them.
“Players have the option of skipping over the scene. At the beginning of the game, there are two ‘checkpoints’ where the player is advised that some people may find an upcoming segment disturbing. These checkpoints can’t be disabled.
“Modern Warfare 2 is a fantasy action game designed for intense, realistic game play that mirrors real life conflicts, much like epic, action movies. It is appropriately rated 18 for violent scenes, which means it is intended for those who are 18 and older.”
I predict an uproar from certain members of the excitable media. I predict semi-accurate headlines will proclaim: "New Game Has Players Take The Role of Terrorists!" while ignoring the fact that this is, essentially, a cut-scene where you control a character, and the scene itself doesn't glamorize terrorism: After all, you are betrayed by your own leader, who is so evil, he shoots his own men.
We don't really know the context of the level either: Perhaps the player is infiltrating the terrorist group and has to participate or blow his cover. Maybe the main character is under the influence of mind-altering drugs. Maybe it's a dream sequence. But no matter what utility it might serve in Modern Warfare 2's plot, it's a disturbing thing to watch; I can't imagine how disturbing it would be to play. While I'm all for artistic freedom in games, even I gotta shake my head a little at how far this goes.
Although Modern Warfare 2 is scheduled for a November 10th release, You have to wonder whether this particular level will end up in the finished game. I give it a 50/50 shot, honestly, depending upon the intensity of the controversy surrounding this leaked footage.

No reasonnot to put it in the game and it annoys me that people are saying it's "too much", not it's not. It's life... if some group of terrorists wanted to go in an airport and kill everyone they could and if a group of people get that idea from this game then they are just too stupid to pull it off. It won't affect anyone so put it in, play it and laugh while you murder everyone, I know it will be a fun part of the game. "Oh look that women and child are making it away, boom!"
Mr.Rager
The only people who care about killing "innocent" are the same people who get bent out of shape MOMS and POLITICIANS. I don't know if this is in America or not correct me if I'm wrong. But, if we were in a Muslim airport shooting Muslim people. No 1 would care.

Does it really matter? People will still buy it, and play it regardless.

I hope they leave it in.

On one hand you have movies that:
1.show or imply women and/or men being raped (Shawshank Redemption),
2.show children being murdered (Postal),
3.show terrorists killing people indescriminately (The Seige)
4.show police officers being killed (Heat),
5.glorify drug dealers, criminal gangs and selling drugs (American Gangster, Goodfellas),
6.glorify torture (Saw, Hostel).
Lets not forget that all of the above use special effects that easily rival actual crime scenes in terms of realism and gore, some to the point of making people ill at the theatre.
On the other hand you have:
A game that has you playing the bad guy killing "innocents".
I think that in order to tell a good story, sometimes you need to make people a little uneasy to get the point across. The thing that bothers me is the double standard between movies and games. It's ridiculous, because people are influenced and desensitized to violence more through movies, the local news and music than video games. It's somehow ok for a reporter to ask a father (live) how he feels about just finding out that his family was killed in a car crash, but being the bad guy in a game is wrong? Platoon and Full Metal Jacket are considered cinematic triumphs, but a game depicting the Vietnam War is wrong? The fact is the misconception that the average gamer is a child and not an adult. The industry as a whole needs to get away from the idea that only kids play video games and demand parity with the other more established forms of media.

As long as people are mature about this and they don't go around saying things like, "I love the part when you get to be a terrorist and shoot innocents." Unless they can back it up with something along the lines of how it was a powerful story device to get the plot rolling. I'm sure the game will have a really good reason for this scene to occur like, to give us, the players, an intimate view on what may be going on in the mind of a terrorist. Lastly, I really hope the media can be smart about this also by not focusing on this part of the game.

I still don't care if I can play as a terrorist or not, I can do that online!

That's how it has to be done, show Hollywood and the media that games should be taken seriously as a form of entertainment. Let the controversy come.

ITs a game, end of story. People draw to many realities between games and real life. The truth of the matter is that this is a simulation on a computer! This is not real life. Why are we trying to take away the creativity of the game? This part to me is a great idea! It puts you in the mind of the enemy, I mean thats pretty awesome. Taking this away would dent the games creativity greatly in my opinion. If your offended by it then pay no attention to it, let Infinity Ward worry about right and wrong.
Oh, and last time I checked we Americans kill innocent civilians on a daily basis.

ya, ive decided to stop reading all these spoilers. the game is so close to launch, that i think i can tolerate a blackout. couple more weeks boy-os!
ThaSaltShaker
its not crossing the line at all. I thought it was shocking and it totally made me understand that MW2 is going to be a compelling and incredible story.
knuckles009
I do believe it is crossing the line a bit, but then again u can kill people freely in gta games whats the difference?
Purplehasiso
I think the reason they put this in is to really put in perspective what these terrorists are. "oh they blew up another builidng in Iraq" people say, when the reality of it they murdered alot of innocent people leaving some deformed for the rest of their lives or without fathers or mothers or sons and daughters. I think this will be a great eye opener for the general american public to how sick terrorists actually are.
BONERJAM
If people are really upset about playing as a terrorist you really need to light up. ITS A VIDEOGAME it not real.
rogueassassin14
alright so i am gonna have a long comment...first of all, the article says SPOILER ALERT, OBVIOUSLY...so anyone who is pissy needs to go back to grade school and learn how to read again. secondly...people who are saying this game is disturbing better NOT be playing cod4 because that contains (in multiplayer) playing as a terrorist and shooting at US LIKE soldiers...but no one has a problem with that...does anyone else see the lack of consistency in these people's objections?
the game is mature and people should be prepared for mature content...and these same people who are complaining better not be watching/playing SAW bc that has the same idea of hurting civilians...this game is showing the reality of what the world is like and personally think its good to remind people what a holes terrorist really are...i think this game is good bc it challenges the fact of what poeple do not want to believe...this is happening in places around the globe and people dont mind playing cod4 as a terrorist...how is this any different? i realize my theory will prob have holes in it that other people will want to poke holes into...but this is my 2 cents...everyone should just enjoy the game for what it is...its fictional
