No one really doubts that the PlayStation 3 has the technological horsepower to create mind-blowing interactive experiences for years to come. But to truly start to appreciate that power, you need games like Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and Insomniac Games’ Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time to come along and show you what the console is actually capable of creating.
And luckily for us, the PS3 is still a few years away from leveling off in the power department; that is, according to Insomniac’s senior community manager James Stevenson. As CVG reports, Stevenson recently spoke about the PS3’s potential going forward, saying, "There's always ways we can become more efficient. The PlayStation platforms are built with a very high ceiling and I think that's part of the success Sony has had in creating these platforms with really long life spans.”
Stevenson goes on to say that developers usually spend the first few years of a new console generation getting comfortable with the technology, and that now, the PS3 “is finally hitting its prime.” As for the console’s future, Stevenson said that he believes it will two or three years before the PS3 is maxed out.
“We're using all of the PS3 right now, but you can always be more efficient in the way you use it,” Stevenson concluded.
Efficiency is clearly going to be the key to the PS3’s longevity, as evidenced by comments made by Naughty Dog back in August when the developer talked about having tapped out Blu-ray's storage capacity on Uncharted 2. Naughty Dog creative director Amy Hennig also told GameTrailers during this year’s PAX that the developer had “maxed [the PS3] out” with its latest critical smash hit as well. Clearly, developers have quite a task ahead of them.
Of course, if the last few years of the PS2 taught us anything, it’s that the end of a console’s lifecycle typically produces some of that generation’s most memorable and stunning games. There’s absolutely no reason to think it will be different this time around.
Or is there?

PS3 freezes up? I have had a PS3 since it first came out and it only freezed up once. In the same time my Xbox RROD 4 times. Go away tool. 65% failure rate for the 360 compared to 7% for the PS3

Lol! Is the reason the PS3 freezes up all the time is b/c its so "powerful"?
sukTHEfacc
oh dear, a PS3 at half power is still twice as strong as the 360 on full power.

umm the example of the blu-ray being maxed out does not mean the machine is being maxed out per say but i am glad that developers are finally fine-tuning the games on the console i still own one of the originals and am hoping that games become more creative in utilizing the devices multimedia for use in gameplay like in music or as background images on billboards as a way of increasing abilities of the story or graphics in areas that would be mindblowingly awesome

Until top of the line quality games like Uncharted, MGS4, and Killzone 2 are coming out almost every couple of weeks for ps3...I don't think there will be a PS4... even then... would we need a ps4? I mean yeah sure progression, but wow.

Even if Uncharted 2 had maxed the system out, I would be happy if all games could just meet that level of quality for the next few years. However, I think we have just seen a small glimpse into what the system can do. I'd be surprised if a PS4 announcement even came out before 2012.

i haven't done enough research on this matter, but from what i hear the 360 was not built with 1080p like the ps3 (i think the elite is an exception). So all it does is upscales every game from 720p like the ps3 does with most of its games (which is less than 99% of the games). Could be wrong.
Nonetheless, I have two of the best looking games this generation-MGS4 and Killzone 2 and even though MGS4 plays in 1080p i still like the visuals of Killzone 2 better. I also heard Uncharted 2 was 720p and i don't think anyone denies it to be the best looking game out now. I don't think pixels should be a concern unless you have a tv bigger than 60 inches. Not the usual 50 inches since the games can be upscaled.
I can't see anyone who cares so much about true HD would buy a 360 instead of a blu ray player. Its a really annoying argument that is probably growing since netflix has just been eliminated from conversation. Its only a matter of time before i see some of you guys saying the zune marketplace is better than a blu ray player.

Im Thinking the PS3 will actually be maxed out in 5-10 years, there more that a game need than just pretty graphics can't forget that Most definitely Uncharted 2 was the closest, since it had everything MGS4 as well. I also think the 360 will be maxed out in 3-5 But just because a system is maxed out doesn't mean that its reign is over anyway. I mean I know I don't feel like buying a new system and I doubt that MS and Sony are even think about a new console (especially Sony).

I hope the next time I have to buy Xbox 720 and PS4 is when my son turns 10. Im VERY happy with my xbox 360 and my PS3, wii not so much.
P.S. Im 14 =)

I am probbaly gonna get backlash for this but i don't think the PS3 is at it's prime with 99% of the games being 720p and not taking advantage of 1080p. Which is a reason why some people prefer to get it on the 360 since it is 1080p (like Street Fighter 4 is 1080p in the 360 and 720p on the PS3)and even if it's not true 1080p they upconvert it to 1080p like people claim Halo 3 was not 1080p. My TV changes to the native resolution of the signal like when i turn on the PS3 it says 1080p but when the game starts it switches to 720p and when i pop in Halo 3 the TV does say 1080p.
Not saying visuals are the most important part because it's not. Some less then visual stunning games like puzzle quest is still really fun. But there are A LOT of people who only care about HD sparking visuals. Like for example one idiot on 1up said he won't play New Super Mario Wii because it's not HD and he thinks looks like crap but i think it looks amazing. So obviously he got alot of people knock him and say who cares and his loss.

The PS3 has always had untapped potential and games like Uncharted 2, Killzone 2, MGS4, etc. have been prime examples. The PS3 won't be maxed out for a very, very long time. Also I read posts earlier that mentioned God of War 3, that will be another game that will display the PS3's raw power.

This revelation sounds to stupid coming from Insomniac. If I were Sony, I would not have this guy to say this. This is compliment but at the same time hampers the image of Sony. The PS3 has been advertised as a console with enormous potential that remain untapped. 2 or 3 years is not that much.

I don't know about you guys, but I can't wait to see what God of War 3 has in store. I remember how beautiful God of War 2 looked, until I saw Gears of War (Gears made it look like it was made in the 80's). On the other hand, Uncharted 2 looks substantially better than Uncharted 1, so I'm sure there is room for improvement. I know there will be some awesome looking games in the next couple of years, but if they make another graphical jump like they did between PS2 and PS3 - wouldn't you drop another $500 on a new system? They have said that the polygon count on Kratos alone is more than the PS2 could handle. Can you imagine how sweet a PS4 version of Kratos would look?

The PS3 will probably be the last system to be maxed out, due to the the architecture of the system. Nintendo will probably be the ones with a new system out first with MS to follow. Sony is really the only one I can see having a real 10 year life cycle due to the fact that they are just now catching up and getting their act together. Disk space doesn't necessarily mean a better system. Last Odessy came on a whopping 4 DVD's (roughly equal to a single layer blu ray disc), but was lukewarm in reception. It's all about how programmers code and utilize the hardware. Uncharted 2 looked so good because the SPE's of the Cell were able to use most if not all of it. Code optimization is always coming, particularly in later years. In my judgement, the 360 has the bettter graphics, atleast on a first look basis due to their ability to upconvert 720p to 1080. As a gloating statement, all my lovely games on PC can run 1080 without a hitch so Crysis is quite a wonder :).

Looks like I made the right choice when I bought mine last year. It still continues to impress me over and over with the overall quality and capability, and the games are amazing too. No complaints here. :)

I like this news. I got a PS3 in June and I'm glad to hear that I won't really need to buy a PS4 in a another year or so. But about that Xbox 360...

Jay, because you can't upgrade your console hardware every few months like you can with a PC. New graphics card and hardware devices are released for PCs every few months that are leaps and bounds better than their predeccesors. While that sounds good and all...it's actually very frustrating and expensive for PC gamers to keep up with.
That being said, I don't think you want your consoles to have PC capabilities. Unless you're filthy rich with more money than you know what to do with.
JayHy17
why cant we have consoles that have pc graphics? update the heck outa the ps3, make it look even better!
optimusx
2 to 3 years? I call shenanigans. It'll be longer.
SirValor1177
Yes I can't live without my Blu ray, lol. OOOOOOOOO pretty graphics, oooooooo.
