You might not know Nolan North by name, but you definitely know his voice, as he's had staring roles in such hit games as the Uncharted series, Assassin's Creed, The Prince of Persia, Shadow Complex, as well as having bit parts in a ton of other high profile games (Check out his IMDB page for the full list). But it's his latest work on Naughty Dog's Uncharted 2: Among Thieves that brings North to our attention today, because, as he told the Official PlayStation Blog during a recent podcast (via Edge Magazine), he would very much like to play the series' main adventurer in the big screen adaption of the game that was announced earlier in the year.
"I want to do the movie. I mean I would love to do it as Nathan Drake and if I keep getting such recognition as bringing this character to life like no one else can, I would love to play myself. But I’ve been in this business for long time now and I’ve done film, I’ve done television and I understand the realities of the business," North said.
Considering that the now hunky Jake Gyllenhaal was cast to star as the Prince in the film adaptation of Prince of Persia, it wouldn't be that surprising if Uncharted's producers decided to go with a big name actor to bring Nathan Drake to the silver screen, even though North most recently portrayed the character in Ubisoft's 2008 title. And actually, North has already decided who he would like to play Drake should he not get the part.
“I would love them to get Hugh Jackman if they’re not going to use me… I think the producers really would like to see Jackman because… he has that tough guy exterior but… there’s a lot going on behind his eyes. There’s a lot of emotion and sensitivity on that brusque exterior. And he has great comic timing. I mean he’s a phenomenal actor and I just hope that I get a part in the movie where I get to work with Hugh."
Nothing against Jackman, but I think he's a bit too brawny for Drake. Granted, Drake isn't quite as nerdy as Indiana Jones, but he still has to have that kind of "normal guy" feel. And watching Weapon X muscling his way through temples just doesn't strike me as the right vibe for the movie. Then again, I am no longer a big shot Hollywood producer, so what do I know?
Do you think North should be given a shot to star as Drake? If not, who would you like to see cast in his place?

I think the film would do better by having a relatively unknown play Drake. Even better if it's the exact person who did the motion capture, voice work and served as the model inspiration for Drake.
We wouldn't be watching Hugh Jackman as Drake, or Nathan Fillion as Drake, both would do great, mind you, but with North we'd be watching Nathan Drake. And after seeing him play Drake live in the PS3 "To Michael" commercial, I'm utterly convinced he's the perfect actor for the job.
More so, I honestly think the rest of the voice talent, all live action actors as well, who not only lent their voice to the characters but their look and movement, should play their characters on the big screen. I know that's pretty much not going to happen, but I'm sorry, as much as I like Kristen Bell, she doesn't top Emily Rose as Elena Fischer. She's great in Haven. Claudia Black is probably the best known before Uncharted, etc.
As unlikely as I think this is to happen, I honestly think it would serve the film best. The voice actors in the game are extremely talented, and being relatively unknown would in my opinion, serve the roles better.
Case in point, when you think of Hugh Jackman, you think of Wolverine. He was unknown when cast as Wolverine. He became that character. Halle berry wasn't unknown, nor was Patrick Stewart, and while they were both good at portraying their characters (Stewart better than Berry imo), you don't immediately think of them as being their character. It was Patrick Stewart playing Xavier. Same reason Christopher Reeves is Superman. Being unknown helps the character often times. Being a known star is just about studio money. If people know the star, they'll see the film for the star, not so much for the movie.

Joe Flanigan, from the stargate atlantis series, he looks, acts, and sounds like drake its perfect. look him up on wikipedia.

I agree that Nolan North could pull it off. Granted he is not a big time name outside of the video game community but come on... who else has the voice and mannerisms. He is Nathan Drake! At the same time I wouldn't mind seeing a full CGI adaptation of the film with a new storyline. That way all voice actors could reprise their respective roles no questions asked. Nathan Fillion I'm not a big fan of. As much as I love Wolverine, I say HELL NO to Hugh Jackman. Worst case scenerio... Ryan Reynolds if he could be more natural and not over do comic deliveries.

Gerard Butler looks very much like Drake.

Even though he is getting old,
Jim Carry might be an acceptable choice!
Jooseph
Andy Samberg all the way

At first I said maybe North could play the part. Then I looked at his picture and changed my mind. Sorry man, but I don't think it would work out.

Given that North does all the MoCap fo Drake , the facial reference and the voice work. No one can doubt that he should have first pick on that role. I mean without him 85% of Nathan Drake doesn't exist.
That said if Hollywood does go their typical route then Nathan Fillion would be a great second choice. We all know that won't happen for a huge budget franchise, though.
I do agree that most of the voice actors would be amazingly spot on. The only issue I have with that is Sully.
How's this for a list though
Drake- Nathan Fillion
Elena- Kristen Bell
Sully- (drawing a blank here so) Christopher Walken
Novaro- Clifton Collins Jr.
Roman- David Morse

i hope he gets to, or nathan filion. either one is a good choice.
ninja1259
and i think Christopher Nolan should direct the movie : P

I agree to doing a CG Movie so they can cast everyone from the original game series.
Problem solved.
Barring that, take a chance on a lesser known actor.

Chris Evans is worth considering. He's got potential to pull off Drake's witty personality and looks. Definitely has hollywood star quality that's perfect for the film. What do you guys think?
Mr_Eko_73
Although the movie would make no money with "no names" I think all of the voice actors from the game could pull of the movie. Graham McTavish as Zoran Lazarevic? I'd buy a ticket.
The Emperor's Champion
A little LESS Jack O'Neil-esque*
The Emperor's Champion
Nolan North, Joe Flanigan or Nathan Fillion. Any one of them would be perfect.
I was actually dead sure they must've modeled Drake after Fillion. He looks so much like Mal its ridiculous!
Now that someone mentions him, Joe Flanigan really has very similar sort of demeanor to Drake and looks an awful lot like him. He'd just have to be a little Jack O'Neil-esque.

i think that if the producers do not pick Noah North that they should not do the movie at all because he is Nathan Drake period.....
NickAnguiano
I'm not saying they'd make good actors but almost all the voice actors look very similar to their in game characters. The girl that plays Chloe, to me, looks like damn near the same person if she just put her hair up. Even the who plays Lazarvic looks like him.
Also props to Nolan North, probably the best most successful voice actor out there. Jeez he's voiced at least one character in almost every triple A title this gen.
darthernie
to bad Will Smith is not white...he did good in the action comedy Bad boys I and II.....i really dont know who will be good to play Nathan...i was thinking Brad Pitt or Hugh Jackman.
O WAIT I KNOW...HEATH LEDGER!....lol...cruel joke...sorry

I can't think of a single well-known actor that would be good for the job. Sometimes I think the best decision is to find a nobody for a role, and I definitely think that's what they should do here. Otherwise, that famous person brings a lot of past emotions along with them into the role. I think it would be much better to start viewers off fresh, with no biases, negative OR positive! The only person mentioned in the article that I could agree with would be Nolan North, except I'm unsure about his body type, whether it fits that of Drake. I'm sure something can be done about that though, and Nolan North really is awesome. Anyways, as mentioned by others, my jaw dropped when Hugh Jackman was suggested for the part. I really like Jackman, but I think that's about the worst person out there for the part of Nathan Drake. They have to find a guy that can pull off the "every day" and down to earth guy appearance, not someone who is jacked (no pun intended), such as Hugh Jackman. I just really hope they take their time with this, and choose carefully and smart. I really hope they allow Naughty Dog to oversee major choices being made. And I also hope that ND sees a better Drake for the part than Jackman....
Mertz523
Nolan North does have acting ability, aren't there behind the scenes videos on the first game you can unlock and you see the voice actors also acting out the cinema scenes for the motion capture cameras? Plus he's had stints on TV as well. He would be perfect for the role.
I agree that Nathan Fillion should do it if they don't sign North. When I first saw the character model, that's who I thought he looked like the most.
