Netflix LogoSony announced this weekend that Netflix movies will be available for streaming to the PlayStation 3 next month. The service can be used by Netflix subscribers for no cost, other than the price of a Netflix subscription.

Initially, watching movies Netflix via the PS3 system will be enabled by a free, instant streaming Blu-ray disc that is being made available to all Netflix members.  You can sign up early right here.

“As instantly watching movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix becomes an increasingly popular way to enjoy the Netflix service, our goal is to rapidly expand the devices that stream to our members,” said Netflix CEO and co-founder Reed Hastings in a statement. “As a leading game console and Blu-ray disc player, bringing Netflix to the PS3 system is a real win for both Netflix members and PS3 system owners.”

Streaming Netflix movies is one of my favorite things about the 360. It's efficient, quick and flawless. Honestly, it reminds me of how I always thought people would watch TV in The Future. That Netflix is available on the PlayStation 3 as well, except no one will have to maintain a monthly "Gold" membership, is a pretty major selling point to PlayStation 3 for some gamers. I'm not huge on multiplayer, so Netflix is one of the main reasons I keep my Gold membership active.

Now, as soon as Netflix starts making a greater percentage of its movies and TV shows available for instant streaming, I'll cancel my satellite altogether!

If it works just as well, I will definitely start watching movies on the PS3 instead of Microsoft's console -- my PS3 is tons quieter than my 360, and I need to hear every subtle bit of Foley work in Sorority Girls In The Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama. Do you use Netflix's streaming?

This is great news. And from what I can tell, Netflix streams everything that is currently on the Starz channel, including their original series as they air (Party Down is the balls). So basically cancelling Starz on cable pays for most of Netflix and you still get everything from the channel. Sounds like a bargain to me.

Should be great for me and my 576kbps connection. This digital revolution is going to put a serious number of people out of availability to certain media. HD films is definitely one of them. SD videos are not much better. The only thing that kinda works via streaming is music.

    I won't be paying for something I can't use.

You know whats the most interesting part? Sony's Sony Pictures, MGM, columbia Pictures are EXCLUSIVE to PS3, because Sony owns these studios + Netflix, i mean is there ANY reason to buy Xbox? I mean something... Everything will come to PS3. Everything. X-game chat will come, skype is coming for sure.

I know xbox 360 on next E3 will come with something, because they don't have nothing now... PSN is free and e.t.c., games, blu ray, sheesh...

I don't own Xbox but is there something that is not coming out and still great? I mean for REAL.

I foresee a lot of people hitting their download caps.

AND G4 FIX YOUR profanity filter!
I'm sick of the s and hit bug!

I initially put 'folks' and 'hitting' together, heck just now I had
to put 'and' hitting instead of 'plus'. LAME.

Happy and yet not. Why do we have to have everything the X-bots have? So now are they gonna make there movie service obsolete and get rid of it? What would be the point if everyone has Netflix? Well except for the fact that Netflix streaming service still blows chunks for actual content, maybe this will be the final straw to make them put everything online. I just can't imagine what would possess Sony to want to lose money on their own service? Ehh I guess there will still be people like me out there who don't want to waste cash every month for a service they may not use a lot and just grab a movie from the PS Store.

Ha in 2010 Nintendo will release Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid the Other M and Legend Of Zelda Wii. Nintendo will keep control as they did before the PlayStation with the NES and SNES. Though I miss Sega in hardware business.

What do you mean getting our spot back? Do you work for sony?

I've been thinking about getting netflix for some time and since I use my ps3 for pretty much everything now may be the time to take the plunge. Also, I have been debating between getting a 360 or not for about a month now and this definitely lessens my desire to. Because, that and a couple of exclusives (Halo, Fable, Gears) where really the only things driving me to make the purchase. Also, I'm a little fed up that I'd have to buy a wireless adapter for $100, because I'm not running an ethernet cable 30 feet through my house. Someone told me I might be able to run an ethernet cable from my wireless laptop too my 360, is that true?

Also, I found out about this news about 4 minutes after it was announced last night. Unfortunately, I was still the second person to post it on the playstation forums. So no kudos for me :(

i never used netflix only because my internet modem is so outdated and when the internet is used to much it disconnects.

is it me or are all of these features useless on a GAMING console. watching dvds and bluerays is one thing but y do i need it stream movies, connect to facebook, internet browser, stream music, and all the other stupid crap these game consoles do. That is why i have a computer. i connect my computer to my tv all the time to watch downloaded movies or watch tv shows off Hulu.com. I would rather have my console play games offline/online and watch the occasional dvd.

This is very good news. I recently canceled my Xbox Live gold and am missing the nice Netflix console interface (I can still watch through PlayOn). It will be good to have the official Netflix interface.
