Welcome to Morning Hangover -- an excellent way to start your day with the crew at TheFeed...no matter what you're recovering from. Every morning you'll hear musings from our editors and have the chance to share your thoughts on what's going on in the gaming world.

The Joker

I (finally!) finished Batman: Arkham Asylum over the weekend. It’s the best game about Batman since 1986’s Batman, in other words, ever. I’m not going to spoil AA’s  ending, but it is a very awesome conclusion, in the true sense of the word… but then, so is the beginning. You know why this game inspires so much awe? The Joker. The Joker is such a terrifying but endearing bad guy, it got me thinking about video game nemeses in general and what makes a great game villain.

As in any kind of story-telling, you can’t have a hero without an enemy– The “goodness” of the good guy only works if the “badness” of the bad guy is in balance -- Think Ishmael and the Great White Whale, Tom and Jerry, God and Satan. That’s why Darth Vader is so much better than Darth Maul – Vader’s single-minded obsession with  destroying the rebellion was terrifying enough -- dude would blow up planets for no reason-- but when it turned it out Luke was his son… damn. Where Darth Maul looked sort of scary, I guess, but that was about all he did.

What’s your pick for overall best/worst video game villain?

Tiesel Bonne from Mega Man Legends has been hands down my favorite villain for a good, long while now. Villain might be too strong of a word, though, and that's why I like him. He's a ruthless pirate but has unwavering dedication to his baby brother and sister. But he's also not the worst person on earth. When the chips are down and the planet faces possible extinction, he's there to help Mega Man make sure that there's still a world left. Possibly just to loot.

    Kefka Final Fantasy VI

I love the voice acting that was done for him on the new Dissidia game, it was amazing being able to see him re rendered in modern day 3D and just as Diabolic as ever.. he makes Sephiroth look like a bottom b*tch

I find it funny that some of the posts referring to Kefka from FFVI as the greatest villain specifically signal out FFVII's Sephiroth as an inferior antagonist. While Kefka did some truly evil things (poisoning the town's water supply, ripping the world in two), he was evil for the sake of evil. Okay, he had that one monologue referring to the fulitlity of humanity, but, for the most part, he was just crazy. Frankly, that's been done before.

Conversely, Sephiroth's character is steeped in backstory. The journey of FFVII does as much to discover his story as it does to tell Cloud's. From the suggested-rape that resulted in his conception to countless scientific experiments that altered his being, a true MOTIVATION to being the villain was developed for Sephiroth. While you never wanted to side with Sephiroth, the player could understand where he was coming from. That kind of depth of character makes a truly great villain, and that kind of depth is still a rarity in the art of virtual entertainment.

Maybe if Kefka had the charisma of the Joker, I could put him on top. For now, however, regardless of his well-conditioned hairstyle, I've got to side with Sephiroth.

    Best villains:

    Luca Blight (Suikoden II)
-A hardass psychotic villain if ever there was one.

    Liquid Ocelot (Metal Gear Solid)
-Not the type of villain who causes a "You JACKASS!" type reaction, but rather a villain who always has you wary of what the hell they're going to do next. If he starts laughing gleefully you just kinda go "Oh god....what now? This can't be good...."

    GlaDOS (Portal)
    -Just freakin awesome.

    Bowser (Mario)
-A goofy dragon-kappa thing who is the most iconic video game villain of all time. Constantly kidnapping a plumber's girlfriend. Not very malicious, but totally relentless in his goals.
One day Bowser will succeed....one day.

    CATS (Zero Wing)
-I've never even played it but my base belongs to him. This dude has jacked EVERYONE's bases. We have no chance to survive. He set us up the bomb!

    Psycho/Screaming Mantis (Metal Gear Solid)
-A villain who doesn't just mess with the hero, but the player directly. Well played Kojima.... Well played.

    Colossi (Shadow Of The Colossus)
-Most of them just seem to be animal things that are kinda ticked off that you're trying to kill them, but ALL of them are among the most epic video game creatures of all time. Each one so vast as to be it's own level...they are the rock solid foundation of a game with nothing but boss fights....

Not that he's been a big villain in games, but I've always liked Magneto. The whole friendly relationship with Charles and the fact that he sometimes knows he needs to team up with the X-Men gives him a dimension you don't see with many villains. At times, there's not really a right and wrong, but only shades of gray.

Besides all the hate it got, Wesker is a sole stand alone reason to play Resident Evil 5. Although he is a general villain in the entire universe, his whole teleporting Muay Thaii combat, with his slick awesome attitude at least in the cut scenes he was awesome. Even if RE had to turn it generic with the big bad monster fight at the end, the earlier stuff int he game with Wesker at least make you want to get far enough to be disappointed.

Also Xehanort from Kingdoms Hearts 1, was a great villain. Actually, in most cases from Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, you could make a pretty long list of some memorable villains, and I'm talking about the non Disney ones. Nearly every member of Organization 13 in KH 2, had some personality that drew you in to the point where they were bad ass enough that you wish you could play a game with them, or evil enough to warrant you wanting to defeat them.

You guys have it all wrong. The best villain in both movies and games is obviously Captain Tobias Bruckner from Turok Evolution.

I would have to say Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII. I don't think I have hated a fictional character more than anyone. Sephiroth was one of the main reasons for me to play Final Fantasy VII, killing Sephiroth was necessary since he kills Aerith at the end of the first disc. Then when you finally get the chance to kill him, the feeling is so rewarding because he was so evil.

Luther from Star Ocean: Til The End of Time. I mean the guy is going to erase an entire universe of conscious sentient beings just because he refuses to believe they are real.

I'm sure there are more, but I can't think of any more right now.

the best and worst villains that i can think of are Nazi's although i love shooting them in the Call of Duty franchise i believe they are over used in video games....Dead Space is one of the best games i played last year so with that being said i am going to say that the ship was a major villain in that game because it needed fixed so it put the main character in harms way...

Although I suppose he can't be considered a complete villain, I thought Magus from Chrono Trigger was great. Ganon(O.o.T.), Atlas/Fontaine from Bioshock, Krelian from Xenogears are good to.
