There was something strange going on on Epic's website yesterday. An image labeled "It's Unreal and it's almost here." was reportedly posted briefly, and then taken down, along with threads about what it could mean. According to Joystiq's unnamed source, Epic plans to release the Unreal Engine 3 to consumers.
From Joystiq:
Our mole tells us that the toolset will ship with example objects, like weapons and maps, and will show users how to build their own custom assets. Odds are, the kit being a product for consumers (read: nonprofessionals), that the cost won't be all that high.

AWESOME! I was looking the other day to see if it was... It will definitely be too expensive for me at the moment, but in the future...

FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!! As a student currently enrolled at Westwood College, I'm crossing my fingers and hoping this is true. If it is then this is great news for my school, and opens the door for future gaming projects :)

i have a feeling this will be reminiscent of other game creators (maps in halo/starcraft and others)... i will try to make something afterhaving a great idea then fail epically... meanwhile other people will create maps that are often better than some professionals

This is outstanding news. Since so many titles out there use an Unreal engine, game design students can use this to learn how to design games before they graduate and make it easier for them to land jobs. More importantly, I think we will see better game designers in the future. Hell, I might pick up a copy just for laughs.
