Most of the time, video games tied into upcoming movies aren’t really anything special. Ok. That’s putting it nicely. Most of them are about as disposable as games can get. However, Ubisoft has made it very clear that it is serious about changing the way movie games are made and how movie games are perceived by gamers, primarily by bridging the gap between developers and filmmakers, and allowing them to work in concert with each other to create games that can stand on their own as good games but that also feel intimately connected (stylistcally, technically, etc.) to the film on which they are based.
Ubisoft’s most high profile test of this strategy will be James Cameron’s Avatar, the hyper-tech, sci-fi action title that Cameron has wanted to make for over a decade. Well, the movie will finally be hitting theaters on Dec. 18, and, as Joystiq reports, the game will be hitting store shelves on Dec. 1.
It will be very interesting to see how both the game and the movie end up, because for as much as Avatar could do for digital 3D technology, the game could also end up representing a major shift in the level of expectations gamers have towards movie-based games going forward (and not just because the game will be playable in 3D).
What are your expectations for Avatar, both as a movie and a game?

yes i would agree that most video games based off of movies have sucked but there have actually been some good ones and i think this will be one of them one reason why i think this is that for one ubisoft has made alot of good games like assassins creed ghost recon advanced warfighter and i don't think that they would put out a game that will suck to james cameron has his hand in this project and he himself said that most videogame tie ins do suck they ruin the story and that is why he worked closely with ubisoft in developing this game and there for i think this will be on of the better games out there this year i think this will set a new bar for the movie based videogames

Generally speaking yes, but X men origins wolverine was actually good. Hopefully this one won't go along the lines of Ironman the game.

Having played the Lost Planet 2 demo numerous times, I can definitely see the similarities between it and this. Taking into consideration that both games are coming out in December, and there's not a playable demo for Avatar yet, I'm more likely to buy Lost Planet 2. I really want to see Ubisoft succeed with this project, but I gotta be honest and say that "Time to do some damage" line sounded awful. Indeed, the character sounds preposterously macho. Also, I would hope they offer you more ways to fight that boss, instead of dodge rolling every time it charges. As cool as that looks, it'll get old quickly. The visuals and environmental design, however, look great. Sounds good too.
Maybe they'll succeed in creating a successful above average video game/movie tie-in, but I want better than above average. ESPECIALLY in the event they intend to do a video game tie-in for James Cameron's next film (and I know someone will), Battle Angel. I love James Cameron's movies, and I'm excited to see Avatar -- but -- I am foremost a Battle Angel Alita fan, encouraging all to see this movie and also look into Yukito Kishiro's Gunnm (Wikipedia it if you have to), because I assure you Battle Angel is a superior work to whatever sci-fi media you may currently enjoy (yes, even better than Star Wars). Avatar will be epic, no doubt, but Cameron's future film is liable to blow everyone's minds even further.

James Cameron is the director of the film. AND he also had his hand in the game. Thats a very positive sign.
Im approaching this game with cautious enthusiasim. Most movie-licensed games suck due to the sheer fact that the movie crew does not even participate in the game. Sure there are other reasons such as development cycles, time for development, lack of creativity or relation to the movie. BUT one big thing that is missing is the fact that no-one from the films contributes to the game. When no-one contributes, you know the game will such. Im not just talking about the actors. Just the film producers, directors, designers, etc. if the crew does participate, you get very good results such as X-Men Origins: Wolverine and the Chronicles of Riddick.
James Cameron is heralded as a God to cinema. The fact that he had his hand in the game tell me its not going to suck. but this is where Ubisoft must prove itself. We'll see if it a descent game or a good game...
