Somebody let Blair Herter into the studio this week, and what resulted was the newest episode of Feedback. Adam, Patrick and I tried to make the best of it, choosing to focus instead on the week's most notable news, and our Game of the Week: Double Fine's Brutal Legend. (Just kidding, Blair was highly tolerable!)

G4tv.com's Feedback -- Brutal Legend Edition »

We also headbang to the following...

  • The September NPDs are here, which means its time to see if the PS3's price drop had any significant effect. (Spoiler: It did.)
  • America has spoken: The Beatles are still pretty awesome. Or at least still awesome enough to edge out Guitar Hero 5.
  • People bought Halo 3: ODST. No way! I know, right!?
  • EA's Peter Moore believes that the industry will soon be entirely digital, with Microsoft leading the way. He also thinks that some of us will be having grandchildren in 10 years, which is a far more dubious claim.
  • There are rumors that A Crack in Time might be the last Ratchet & Clank game. If you watch carefully, you can see the exact moment Adam's heart breaks. But is it really possible?
  • Is Brutal Legend better or worse off for having elements of real-time strategy? And is the game's charm and humor enough to keep us going?
  • At one point, we may have asked the question "How does Tim Schafer feel about Tim Schafer?" If we didn't, we got pretty close.
  • Reader duberi wonders why we review games the way we do, and we get a little defensive. Sorry about that.
  • Plus Patrick's 10-day forecast for the greater Los Angeles area (95% chance of being better than where you are).

When introducing the panel, Adam said that Patrick was a new specialist. Is he getting more of a role at G4 with the Feed? If so, congrats.
@ Patrick: About your hair comment earlier, I have to say, your cracker fro fits you. It definitely works better than most of my pasty friends' attempts to have that haircut. Keep doing your thang.

I'd just like to take the time to thank you guys for what you are doing with feedback.

I enjoy all videogame coverage G4 does but have always wanted something a little more in depth and maybe without skits. Not that I'm complaining my DVR is currently stuffed with episodes of X-Play.

Feedback is exactly what I've been looking for in videogame coverage. An actual adult dialogue about the medium.

Thanks again guys. You've earned a loyal Feedback fan. Keep up the great work.

Can not belive that everybody is upset about reviews scores. Reviews are guides to see if it's interting to you and if you should spend your money. Games that are three stars that have content that is interesting to you will still be fun, may have a few glitches here and there, so what.

The digtal distribution is what upsets me. If I spend 600 dollars on 10 games and my PS3 or XBox360 falls off a truck is Sony/Microsoft or any other provider going to let me reload my games when I pick up a new machine? Are they going to keep track of my personel collection for the next few decades so I can play old classics when I want too? I think didtal distribution is cool when I am spending 1 to 3 dollars in iTunes store becasue I could care less if I lost my content in the near future. I think if it's your state of the art game collection you are going to want have more security so you do not have to repurchase them in the future. PSPgo rign a bell for PSP holders.

Digtal distribution is a fad that will have a certain pentration into the market and then stop. I don't see any less music cd's in Walmart, Target or BestBuy. If I buy a couple of songs on iTunes and like, I usally by the CD and rip the rest.

    Hay Adam since you are having so much trouble about the rating system(stars). Why don't you guys on an episode of XPLAY and make a perminate link that explains the system. For example;

Every game is rated based on its own merit.

(1 star)= we do not recamend but if the writen reveiw made it seem apealling then rent at your own dicresion.

(2 stars)= rent if fan of seires, gametype, or if you want to form your own opinion.

(3 stars)= definate rent. If writen reveiw made you curious try for yourself and decide what you want to do.

(4 stars)= buy or rent based on your own intersts and our(G4's) reveiw.

(5 stars)= Buy if you own the system it is on or rent if you don't think you are intersted in the genre.

But the actual verson (G4's) being better worded and without any grammical or spellig errors.

I really liked what you said about the reveiw process I think there can't be some sort of bar set for how each game shold be rated because everyone has a opinion of their own about every game. One person could love Borderlands and yet another think it to be horrible, neither one is wrong its just their own personal feeling about said game. Also I hope Ratchet and Clank doesn't stop but even if it does I am sure Insomniac will just craft anoher excellent series.

I would Have to agree with MyMadness. Dude that typed that letter paragraph WTF, you didn't writ the review, it his opinion(I forget who wrote the review) of course you won't agree duh, if you don't get on a blog and start reviewing video games how you see. Think about it, everybody on G4 has the credentials to back up why they said what they said. Sure maybe Borderlands was better than Halo 3: ODST, TO YOU!!!. I didn't play ODST I don't really plan on playing it(don't have a 360) I don't plan on playing Borderlands anytime soon either(can't handle every game) In that letter buddy reminded me of Sarah Palin. Why did you even mention all those games, you could've asked this " can you explain the rating process?" Simple but to end my rant on ignorance(fanboyism) The council has decided to Fail your Letter, Dubbing it "Fail of the week."

I agree with Patrick and Blair, I want Brutal Legend to be so good, that I'm forgiving of its flaws. I wanted Timmy S. (not to be confused with Timmy T) to have a hit game so bad that I bought Brutal Legend the day it came out, even though I knew I wasn't going to play it for a week because of Uncharted 2. That brings up a question... how important are first week sales to game developers? Are games like movies... where the opening weekend is the most important, or do they focus on long term sales? Playing Brutal Legend now, makes me feel like I should've waited until a 39.99 price drop. That statement is completely based on gameplay, not on story or the game's awesome atmosphere.

Well, I am going to step up and take my bitch slap like a man. First of all my point is not that I want the review to agree with my opinion, I wanted to understand how you as reviewers construct that opinion. I understand that there is isn't a universal standard per se, i.e. more of a bad thing is still bad, however when you use length to knock a game, that clearly matters in regards to giving a higher score as do graphics, gameplay mechanics all working in concernt to create a memorable or al least enjoyable experience, etc. I appreciate your humor at my expense, lol, 3,2,1, but I really just wanted to know how you arrive at your "final decision." I don't think my discourse is sewage level, if you don't want to be questioned don't post reviews online (as I have learned), just because we don't always agree doesn't make either one of us idiots.

Not at all. I'm also a collector and don't like DLC as much as discs. You've nothing to show for your money nor is there any value in it. Meanwhile a console collection looks impressive and in dire times can be sold for whatever need. While all the kiddies collect virtual trophies and babyish achievements I can look to the wall and see a few shelves full of games that I've completed. THAT'S my trophy case.

If the day comes where physical media disappears then I believe I'll quit buying new games. They don't deserve rewards for poor decisions. And I sure as hell won't be bored replaying all the classics I have.

nice show as always. One thought though with all this talk about the feuture and downloadeble games ec ec... Am I the only collecter left out there? I love games and a really big part of my gaming expiriance is to walk down to the store with my hard earned cash and browse shrough the shelfs. Every morning i wake up and i take a loog at my game collection with all the great games ive played through the years and feel proud. Know its stupid but i love the boxes =)

Blair: He's for digital downloads because, "No one is going to miss standing in line at a GameStop". Besides a midnight sale (which Gamestop doesn't do) I have never stood in line for any game and don't know of anyone or heard of anyone who has.
Rating System: Just get rid of the damn thing.

I never played a Schaffer game before Brutal Legend. The RTS parts of the game were a surprise but they still worked in the game's favor. I loved nearly every part of that game. I will consider buying Psychonauts on XBL...

This was a great feedback. Sessler is a great lead role with the absence of Billy now. This video is the best addition to the site more or less ever. Just wish Modern Warfare 2 came up!

Great Feedback. Love waiting and watching the show every week. I really enjoyed Brutal Legend, but I was kind of iffy about the RTS elements. What changed my mind about them was something I read from Tim about those portios of the game. He said that if you are spending more then a few seconds in the air, you're doing it wrong. You should be down in the fight with your troops, running the scene from the front lines. Changing the way I thought about the game, as well as using the tried and true Zerg-rush method, I was able to get through it without lowering the difficulty or driving myself mad. It turned out to be incredibly deep with options and that just made me love the game more. There are flaws for sure, but the metal was worth it.

I agree with you 100% Patrick. Most people complain about the reveiw process because your opinion is not theirs. A review is just an opinion, and if you are reading it because you want someone to feel the same way you do, then you really shouldn't be reading it. Reviews are there for folks who have no real opinion about the game and are just looking for a push in the right direction, not for those that love the game and need their epeen stroked.
