Welcome to Morning Hangover -- an excellent way to start your day with the crew at TheFeed...no matter what you're recovering from. Every morning you'll hear musings from our editors and have the chance to share your thoughts on what's going on in the gaming world.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

We've been kind of quiet about the whole Modern Warfare 2 dedicated server situation, which is pretty much a debacle now, and is about two steps away from a full-on fiasco. But I was pleased to see your reactions to the story Stephen posted yesterday. I don't game as much on the PC these days as I'd like to (mostly because of available time and paranoia that my HDD is failing), but I learned my shooty-shoot games on the PC back in high school and college, which means I'm well aware of the importance of dedicated servers. Is Infinity Ward making reasonable arguments defending their decision? Eh...maybe. (But not really.) Are a certain sub-section of PC gamers overreacting before seeing what IW.NET brings to the table? Perhaps. But is the way that IW is treating their PC community at-large not just disappointing, but incredibly disrespectful of their collective experience and intelligence? Absolutely. Dedicated servers should always be an option.

Vote with your dollars, friends.

Personally I feel betrayed by IW, the PC community made CoD what it is, through dedi's and modding. Needless to say I will not be buying MW2 I will stick to the BF series et al. In fact I, and a number of friends and family, went a step further, as IW is controlled by Activision, which owns Blizzard, our subs to WoW have also gone in the trash (although I have to admit losing WoW hasn't been much of a loss) If I played anything else by them requiring a sub that would also be going the same way.

They are turning there backs on people who made them what they are... competitive p.c. teams and clans were the only ones who bought "call of duty" "call of duty " "united offensive" and "call of duty 2" it was before the time of x-box live. p.c. first person shooter players demand perfect and even ping for match play and this new system used to control the accounts and updates will render that impossible.

if this is not changed quickly this could be the beginning to the end of IW the comp that was known for giving gamers the best possible game play to taking it away all 3 weeks before its peek.

and i speak for us all when i say give us the dedi's and we will forget this all happend kiss and make war..

I'm very happy to see that G4 has taken a side in this matter.
It's very true that IW has been lousy in their support and treatment of the situation. Dedicated servers will make or break this game's longevity. Without them it will be a flash in the pan multiplayer game that dies as soon as the players finish their campaign.

I hope that G4 has enough staff loyal to gaming and those who play said game to continue to press this issue.

On behalf of all gamers (console and PC),
    Thank You!

great to see support from a big bloggers/reviewers toward the PC community. you obviously got it right, we quiet over reacted, but the silence and direspect from Infinity Ward just makes it worse. Dedicated servers are a most in PC gaming.

Please guys, being rude and yelling at people who are actually interested in our side of the story is completely uncalled for... I'm just as upset about IW as anyone in the PC community but I don't think we should be portraying ourselves as the "insane mob" that everyone else is making us out to be... Please lets keep this calm you guys...
It's to late for IW to fix what they did because they have already shipped the game... But if they we're to send out a patch as soon as it bombs with IWNET and give us our dedi's back... We only say that it's going to bomb because no other company that has tried the P2P has succeeded in the PC community... What makes IW think they're special and some how magically figured out the key that no one else could ? I mean their good but I don't think they're that good... Besides they say that "we're doing all the in-house beta testing so there is no need to send out a public beta"... Oh great !!! The PC community's game is being tested by a bunch of console nubs... Nubs that have ZERO love for the PC community... IW could careless... And I say careless because of the total lack of communication from IW to us...
IW keeps trying to defend the "occasional gamer" from all the hardcore gamers and make it easier for a noob to set up his own server... Well HELLO !!! Look it up, read up on the "How To's", someone for help or for some tips... Honestly it's not that hard if you just educate yourself in stead of whining to IW about it... Just ask, I've been playing FPS sense TFC and 98% of the time if you just ask, people in the PC community are almost always willing to help... That what we do, we take care of each other... If you can't do that then by all means go buy an xbox, it will probably suit you better and it will cost less...

The occasional gamers, hacks, and pirates are cheap cop outs... The hackers, yeah there out there and they always will be and the same with the pirates... But any smart pirate will tell you that it's risky business because if you get caught playing a bogus copy online, you toast... Most likely you'll never play any of that companies online games ever again... There's no doubt that pirating is a problem but hackers and occasional are a vast minority... In my time in the COD world I have only ran across a small handful of bone-a-fied hacks... Other than that PB did a decent job of keeping the small time hacks out...

No dedicated servers means I wont buy the game! The BKops team with our 300 members and 20,000 players in our servers are going to move to BF BC2! Long live Dice the gaming company that supports PC gamers!

I'll also not be buying a copy until its fixed.

Why spend $60.00 on a broken game?

no peer to peer set up can begin to match dedicated server because they have
    No drop in drop out
    No user maps
    No mods
    No server to call home
Cant choose where I want to play
    more hacking
    higher pings

I find it laughable that they are going all fox news on us saying red is green and black is white. Like we are all just a bunch of gullible idiots. Sure my house connection is a much better choice for network traffic than a server with fiber connections.

Indeed. I will not buy this game if it does not contain a dedicated server, and I will ask my friends to do the same.

Ya, G4 earned some respect with the PC gaming community, and we only ask that you guys help make our voice heard. Put this on Attack of the show or Xplay, and I guaranty you, that IW will collectively stand up and take notice.

You guys at G4 can relate with us as gamers, and PC gamers have just come to expect Dedicated servers for more players, and mod tools. It's the whole reason why we are PC gamers, it's why we have supported the Cod franchise from the very begining.

I was a console gamer first, as were most of us PC gamers, after playing on PC and souping up my rig, I found a whole new level of gaming. I was a hardcore Cod gamer on 360 and Xbox live, I was in a clan since part 2, and I finaly saved up and put over 1,500 dollars into the ultimate Cod experiance.

Since that time, I have experianced 64 player servers on Cod2 and that was when I knew, I was missing out on the most epic type of experiance I could possible have with Cod. I had Cod4 on 360 first also, cause at the time My pc was not up to par, but when I pimped my PC, I traded in my 360 copy to get the PC version, and I never looked back.

We need your help fellow gamers, be it 360 or PS3 gamers, we are all bretheren, and love gaming. Its not just PC that should have Dedicated servers, you guys should demand it too. Thats why it angers us so, cause its a step back from what they have ALWAYS given us.

What IW is forgetting is that PC gamers MADE THEM.

They messed up huge and really ticked off PC gamers.

    Think of it this way:
Aprox 20,000 servers that will not have to buuy the game so they can legally host the games X aprox 200,000 players who won't buy the game is about $13,200,000 that they just lost.

Where are the stock holders of Activision? You can bet that if someone lost 13 million in a company I was heavily invested in someone would be freshening up his resume.

You can't fix stupid, but you can FIRE IT.

I've gained a whole new respect for G4TV through this.

Please get this story some air-time! Help us get IW's attention by getting us air-time!

IW has been completely disrespectful towards the PC community, the very people that built their company up.

Shame on Infinity Ward, you will not be getting my $120 (I was going to buy 2 copies).

Any hardcore gamer can tell you it doesnt matter how good you are. You live or die two things: Ping and framerate.

Consoles: skill matching leads to sketchy ping rates and console versions of game usually run at 30-40 fps.

PC: Dedicated Servers can have pings as low as 30-40ms meaning smooth lag free playing and for those that wish to invest the money, can have 100+ FPS meaning smooth jitter free aiming. Also being able to play at higher resolutions (I play at 1920X1200) you notice alot more detail at lobg distance.

And let's just remember Consoles (I love my 360 so don't be hatin) are designed using the cheapest parts possible so companies like M$ and $ony can make the most money selling software.

This article hit it dead on:

    IW.net not really better
ya some PC enthusiasts overreacted a little

but the bottom line is Infinity Ward has absolutely been disrespectful and downright insulting toward the PC gaming community.

Cancelled my pre-order yesterday. The girl at Best Buy said they might be sending all their PC versions back due to large amounts of cancellations.

I'd rather be ignored than patronized and lied to.

I'll never buy another Activision game unless they man up, say that they were wrong and give us our dedicated servers back.

This move would be like if Obama came out and said, I know you all like capitalism, but we think it'd be better if we were all socialists! From now on everyone has to buy a Ford or Chevy... I'm sure that'd be met with some sort of resistance, don't you?

They know they messed up, and thats why the forums have been silent. They said that 402 was home sick the day after he droped the bomb! They know they flicked up and this time they will pay for it. They will not get my money, its time to get back on the Battlefield bandwagon.

Lets hope that BFBC2 sells great to warrant the True BF game to be released, BF3! We deserve jets, and I know thats the only way we will get them....

    The Pros:

    * Quick Match! "Because I got the game at Best Buy and had to have Geek Squad install it for me, because I have know idea how a computer works."

    The Cons:

*5min Matchs! "The match making gets rid of the idea that I can stay on a server for a few hours. With the new system in place Ill have to 1: find a match, 2: wait for it to fill, 3: wait for everyone to vote on a map, 4: wait for everyone to ready up, 5: wait for the 30 seconds before the match starts. Is it me, or is that WAY to much effort and time to play for a 5min match!"

    * Ping! "Get ready for a world of hurt when they replace the ping Integer with red/yellow/green bar, green meaning you'll get about 150ping at most. I wouldnt be surprised at all if they removed it all together and just said you where getting a good connection like in Gears of War 2, and yes I love console games, but heaven help us if they think that the matchmaking is smoother gameplay! With this system, the host will always have an advantage. Look at every other game that uses the matchmaking! L4D, Far Cry 2, Operation Flashpoint 2, Gears of War, Gears of War 2, GTA IV, etc... all of these game are impossible to get a good connection with their p2p connection, you will never get around 40ping, which in my opinion, is SMOOTH gameplay!"

    * No dedicated server! "Dont tell me that a private match is the same thing! Lets say I treat it like one, Im not about to start a private match and wait for 20 of my friends to get online every time I want to play a custom Hardcore match! And Im pretty sure I wont be able to browse private matches hence the word PRIVATE, not to mention Im pretty sure you wont be about to rank on a private match."

    * Charged Map Packs! "For us PC gamers we had to wait a month or two after the release of the map pack on the xbox 360. And Infinity awards response was "were working around technical issues..." In other words they were trying to find a way to charge pc gamers. Finally when the map packs came out for PC the only reason they did was because of support of other companies for their advertising, such as you see in the cornnor of the screen when you load up a map from the map pack on PC. Well thanks to the new system they found a way to charge us, which is ridiculous considering pc gamers have to pay extra up front for a beta of a system that hasnt been tested yet. And coming from a 5 year software engineer, this is NOT a way to test a new system thats going to hold millions of clients over p2p connections!
