Welcome to Morning Hangover -- an excellent way to start your day with the crew at TheFeed...no matter what you're recovering from. Every morning you'll hear musings from our editors and have the chance to share your thoughts on what's going on in the gaming world.

We've been kind of quiet about the whole Modern Warfare 2 dedicated server situation, which is pretty much a debacle now, and is about two steps away from a full-on fiasco. But I was pleased to see your reactions to the story Stephen posted yesterday. I don't game as much on the PC these days as I'd like to (mostly because of available time and paranoia that my HDD is failing), but I learned my shooty-shoot games on the PC back in high school and college, which means I'm well aware of the importance of dedicated servers. Is Infinity Ward making reasonable arguments defending their decision? Eh...maybe. (But not really.) Are a certain sub-section of PC gamers overreacting before seeing what IW.NET brings to the table? Perhaps. But is the way that IW is treating their PC community at-large not just disappointing, but incredibly disrespectful of their collective experience and intelligence? Absolutely. Dedicated servers should always be an option.
Vote with your dollars, friends.

jeez, pc gamers are harsh. They are willing to miss the most hyped game since halo 3 just because they can't mod and will have to pay 10 dollars for a map pack just like the rest of us. The fact is that the pc gamer population has greatly diminished in the past ten years, and it is wrong for pc gamers to feel this sense of entitlement. Most hardcore pc gamers reek of arrogance and that is why everyone hares them.

no matter what IW does... I won't Buy any more products IW sells.... The cats out of the bag now IW. The Gamers see your plan.... and it will not stand...
We the PC Gamers choose the PC because we don't like that constrictive walls that the Consoles bring...
We Choose PC.... You chose to turn your back on us..... now we will turn our backs on you...
Thank you EA/DICE for crediting PC Gamers as the builders of your company and respecting us.. My $60 pre-order for MW2 will now go to the pre-order of Bad Company 2 =)
Just remember... You wouldn't have multiplayer options without the PC people... and that goes for console people too...
Oh yeah... and for the console people out there... I have a console too... I just choose to have my freedom when it comes to FPS games... where i find console games are more RPG or Singleplayer Adventure oriented for my taste.... Sure there are Multyplayer games out there that are good to play on console with... but when it comes to FPS, PC is where it's at. Don't knock it till you try it...

This really makes me mad. I am an avid console gamer, Xbox ever since Halo:CE. I have enjoyed the simplicity of connecting and playing over LIVE, as well as the low cost.
However, I have always been interested in PC gaming. I don't like to consider myself hardcore, but close to it. I recently purchased a new laptop to replace my aging desktop that can't handle games years old. I currently run Fallout on it to see how well it is, and it is very nice at that. So with the nice portability, and capability of my laptop I have considered going into PC gaming. Not a powerhouse rig, but good enough for what I am interested in.
And my first multilayer game I plan to use? MW:2. Why? All of the reasons that have been cut from MW:2. The reason I went for Fallout was of the large modding community as was Oblivion. I have loved it so far and I hoped for the same with MW:2.
With this news, I am just going to stick to the 360. There is nothing that the PC version offers to take me away from what I know best. Perhaps BC2 will be better, I'll look into it. And in spite of this, I am buying used for the 360.
Even if I never considered switching and stuck to console gaming I would be pissed. This only forebodes what the future is. If they are willing to screw over PC gaming, than they could be just as willing to screw over console gaming if its in their interests.
THIS INS'T A PC PROBLEM. THIS IS A GAMING PROBLEM.

okay i want to start off by saying i will stay with my pre order.
but anyways everyone who is saying IW.net will suck etc, don't seem to realize all they're donig is speculating, we have so little information it's hard to even try to speculate. why not have a little faith that maybe it will be good? and maybe IW is not responding to the pc community because anything they say will anger an already angry forum base. now i am a member on their forums and to be honest, its pretty much all flaming, but it's coming from the same repetitive sources and people, so as for the petition i don't think the numbers are accurate much less will any number close to that be cancelling pre orders. but i'm just going to have fun with the game, the cup is half full for me.

forgot to add how much has changed since the last title: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =qMfTR8PBrsE

Nice story, to bad it is hidden in the website, perhaps running some information during one of your shows will keep the G4 community informed. I know you are running special coverage of MW2, however if you want to be claimed to be a news source for the gamers, then put your money where your mouth is....

Great to read something from a gaming journalist who actually understands the importance of dedicated servers.
I think the BS from IW about "modders and tuners" is the line that I find particularly aggravating. I played CoD4 on the PC for many hours on dedicated servers and never used any mods or did any tuning. I just appreciated being able to play on lag-free servers with 20, 30 or 40 other players with no host-advantage issues whatsoever.
I won't be buying CoD 6 and making do with a pathetic 8 vs. 8 maximum, dealing with P2P lag and one of the players using hosting to his advantage. No way.

Andrew is absolutly correct. Petitions have never worked online, such as L4D2, but there is one thing a buisnesses in the captital system will understand. A decrease in profit. I also agree with Andrew's points here, are the PC gamers nerd raging a little to hard? I'm a full blown PC gamer, and I completly side with the PC gamer side, but it is quite possiable that we are raging a bit too hard. But Infinity Ward has been actively rude to our community in this whole ordeal, and that is just terriable showmanship. You dont insult the fan, no matter how wrong they may be(I dont think we are here). Anyway, please G4, do some more coverage on this. Id like more responses from the G4 staff as well, and what their opinions on this are.

Thank you G4 for siding with us pc gamers. What you really should do is air a segment about what is happening with the biggest game of the year, ie: the massive pre-order cancellations for any game, because of what IW has done. Help us out more. PC Gamers need our dedicated servers to keep our communities growing and to be able to keep these games alive for years to come with the mods and custom maps.
MajorGriffin
G4 you are the only real major group to say anything about this. It would be much appreciated if you got this some air time to help get the word out and help make InfinityWard reconsider and patch in dedicated servers! You guys totally rock my e-socks off! Peace and love from the PC community. *PS you get a cool little <3*

oh almost forgot Mr. Andrew Pfister thank you for posting this article and posting on the other article's thread concerning this topic. you have earned a lot of respect from me for it (even though in the feedback i could tell a couple of you wanted to talk about this matter but couldn't why you did the little jab at IW).
iamstarfox
The saddest part of this situation is that Modern Warfare 2 looks to be an incredible game! The fact that Infinty Ward is crippling it by not supporting dedicated servers, and thus making it not worth buying, is sickening to me.
ghetto2u
well i cancelled my pre order and not going to purchase this game what so ever (i have a 360 and ps3). i was actually going to buy 2 copies of the game once for pc and my 360 just to see what the different experience would be like, but now even if 6 months down the road IW will see how their system is going to fail and might put in an update for dedicated server support. i will still not buy this game on principle, in everyday life you wouldn't let someone slap your face whenever they want (yes there are exceptions to any point of view no need to point them out to validate your perspective).
Drop_Deadx
G4 I beg you, Air something helping us PC games out. Your pretty much our last hope. Save our community!
No one buy this game if dedicated servers and mod tools are not included.
enissor
why not just have both

Help us G4TV ! We need the coverage, this is being seriously downplayed and is quite possibly the biggest blow to online PC gaming yet.
My earlier comment:
"Listen servers (player hosted) are an ancient way of connecting players together that was brought back for consoles because dedicated servers weren't practical for that platform. They otherwise only serve as a backup means of connection.
Dedicated servers were brought in as an improvement on listen servers with Quake 1 because of all the major latency, insufficient upstream, reliability and host advantage problems (problems on every single console multiplayer game). They nowadays also allow the game's community to live on many years after the game's release (Quakeworld for instance) and players to create custom content.
If ID Software had the foresight more than 10 years ago to realize dedicated servers were THE way to go, how the hell does one of today's most prominent FPS developers make such a backwards mistake, forcing us back into the dark ages of gaming.
If it was practical and console games offered the optional choice of dedicated servers in their games, I bet my family jewels that within a year it would become the most popular means of multiplayer on that platform.
This is why PC gamers worldwide are going berzerk. They are taking away one of the most important triumphs in PC gaming. "

You what to know why we are so upset ??? Watch these 2 vids from "glawk"... He hit the nail on the head and states our case very clearly and without flaming...

This is a dark time for PC games atm.We got the crappy console conversion of GTAIV which was bad enough, but IW's move is just a step to far.But its really been on the cards for a while now :(
I help and maintain 7 gaming servers 4 HL2DM,2 L4D and 1 TF2.All the servers have swear filters on,custom sounds etc too make the players experience just that little bit more enjoyable. We can ban cheaters(yes we do know the differance bewteen cheaters and skill IW) and bascialy keep our servers a happy to place too play.We have a blinding forum full of 360,PS3 and P.C players cause the dedi servers bought us all togther.
How dare IW tell us its a great new system just cause it works with a system that runs all the same hardware, and suffers so much lag they have to have auto-aim.All P.C's are different and we NEED dedicated servers to level the playing the field.I dont wanna be joining a host's game only for them too have a min spec comp that is struggling too run the game, let alone running a server as well.Cheers IW guess the 1 grand I spent on my comp has gone to waste.

p2p servers are a violation of service for many ISPs.
gi_Timmah
Ded. servers are the core of online pc gaming. A persistent server where people can come to have fun, make friends, play custom maps made for FREE, with the settings one likes... They take all this away & insult our intelligence telling us how a laggy p2p is preferable to a high-bandwidth ded. server box. How being forced to pay for whatever few maps they release is better than choosing from almost 1,000 custom maps for free. When a company lets you know all they care about is your money, and that they will take away what you like about their product to get even more $ from you, they've lost sight of what is important. They can keep their product.
