Borderlands came out this week, and as you can probably tell from the reviews, the RPG element to this FPS is a big reason why people are enjoying the game so much. While playing the game, Adam recognized how much he was enjoying the simple yet masterfully crafted gameplay, leading him to the conclusion that grinding can be very satisfying if done right. Such is the subject of this week's Soapbox. Do you like grinding away with your character in a game for a satisfying final outcome? Or are you more of the type that looks for instant gratification from a video game? Watch this week's Sessler's Soapbox and let us know what you think in the comments section.

I understand what you're talking about. I used to play old rpg's like Mother 2 and grinding was a way of getting your character in the best possible way to handle an upcoming battle or boss fight. However, I'm not a big MMORPG fan, mainly because of the extremely long grinding sessions you have to go through. I play FFX and I had to grind somewhat in that game to make sure my team was where I wanted it. So, I do miss the grinding of the old days where a little went a long way. In short, I don't want to have to dedicate precious moments of my life to dedicate to leveling.

i dont really mind grinding...unless its "forced", like for instance im playing demon souls right now (just waiting for my MP to recharge lol) and u grind as a part of the game because u die a lot...its not so much that i want to grind, though i would a little no matter what, but i end up doing it anyways cause if i die i need to go get my souls which gets me more souls and blah
anyways ill prolly get borderlands soon...looks like a great rpg/fps game (and i loved fallout 3) and i need a good coop game that i can have a friend over and play and isnt just online coop...though with R&C:ACIT coming out in a week then AC2 and the GoW collectors pack in november idk if ill have the time or the money since i still have Demon's Souls and the newly bought fallout 3 GOTY to play....ahh so many things and it only keeps on coming in 2010...fml...in a good way :P

I agree. I may have not played Borderlands but I played a lot of Too Human. Is it a great game? Nah but I think it is good. I played it through about 3 or 4 times just because when I felt frustrated I knew I could go back and feel like a god, a robotic god.

OH!!! WHAT WAS THAT AT THE END, ADAM SESSLER!?!?!? That felt semi-threatening! Don't worry about that, though... I watch this show and Feedback every week. So don't do whatever it was that you were thinking about doing... To me. Good Soapbox, though. Can't wait for Feedback tomorrow.

Grinding can work well, but games like WoW kill it when there are 5-10 types of grind quests, and you need to do them hundreds of times.
Borderlands does it right!

I like games....that is a pretty mundane statement. But I have never played a "grinding" game before. The closest thing to it might be Kingdom Hearts in the sense of gathering all the necessary items in order to create new weapons. But Borderlands definitely sounds like a game I should try out. O yea and Adam please don't hurt me when I miss this weeks Feedback. And this might be an old question at this point as well as one that might have already been answered but where is Billy?

Oh yeah, feedback is a great show! just learned about if 2 weeks ago, but I'm really diggin it.

Hah, good stuff at the end. Gonna pick up Borderlands for pc next week, but I'm a little concerned it won't be as fun only single player. My gamer friends don't have pcs that can run it, or they don't like shooters, so it looks like I'll be flying solo on this one.

I remember the days of Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy on the NES... those games were always a chore, but a fun chore. The grinding could be a pain, but, in the end, it was rewarding when you finally beat a dungeon or get through a castle.
I think modern games (Fallout 3 is a prime example) do a great job of that "grinding". I really liked the way Fallout could let you grind away to reach higher levels, but you never really *had* to do it... you could always just move on to other quests. I only wish games like KOTOR and Mass Effect would have offered more of an opportunity to grind.

Did the Sess just threaten us? Nice lol. Love the Feed. Keep it up. One request; can you make THE FEED a thursday or friday show at 5:00ish. No more production than you already do just a TV show. PLEASE!! PLEASE!!

All depends on your mood I fine. Like in your case grinding you found as a good thing while a times we are all up in arms about it.

Grinding....I couldn't help about COD4 Prestige mode. You don't even get achievements for it but it does feel good to constantly double tapp and knife enemies on XBOX Live.

Wow, the two main games that I wanted this holiday season were Borderlands and Uncharted 2. And they were so good that you went and did a soapbox on both of them. I feel special.

i read as far as morgan likes grinding .
hay baby u like grinding i like grinding too lol
ccruse1112
Sounded like an Adam take on a Morgan subject...we know she LOVES grinding games...me not so much! I like games where you level up and collect crap, but my motivation for doing so has to be beyond just doing it, i need a compelling story and fun gameplay, thats why most grinding games dont do it for me.
