You may have written off Platinum Games’ hack-n-slash action title Bayonetta as nothing more than a not-so-subtle rehash (rehash-n-slash?) of Devil May Cry, and based on everything I’ve heard and seen of the game, this assessment doesn’t seem entirely unfounded. However, if Famitsu is to be trusted, this isn’t just any old game here. In fact, it’s a perfect game, and has become the first game to be released on the Xbox 360 to receive a 40/40 from the famed gaming publication, Kotaku reports.
Bayonetta becomes just the 12th game ever to receive a perfect score (meaning that it’s the 12th greatest game of all time?), and interestingly enough, it’s also the third “perfect” game released just this year -- Dragon Quest IX and Monster Hunter Tri being the other two. Similarly, the previous three games to make the list were all released in 2008 -- Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and 28: Fusasareta Shibuya d.
This whole “Famitsu perfect score” discussion came up a few months back, and one of the conclusions drawn was that Japan’s gaming industry was facing hard times, and in an effort to boost people’s interesting in buying more games, gaming publications, most notably Famitsu, were inflating their scores to push gamers to buy more than just one or two games a year, since now there would be more “higher rated” games on the market. It’s still not entirely clear what’s going on over at Famitsu, but things should get mighty interesting as more Bayonetta reviews start rolling in.
What’s your take on Famitsu’s perfect score list? Is the publication throwing around perfect scores too easily these days?

The only Xbox/360 game to receive a perfect score!
LMAO.

The perfect games listed are made in Japan. The magazine is made in Japan. The gaming economy isn't doing well in Japan.
It's likely that Famitsu likes Japanese games better because they have a taste for the style of which Japanese games are made in. Still, it could be a trick to convince Japanese gamers to spend their money.

It would not be the first time. I have noticed the same in the United States. Games like Uncharted 2 and Brutal Legend are receiving high scores. I am not saying these two games are not good. But there has to be some ulterior interest from the developers to se their games praised.
I was listening to the Giant Bombcast last night, and they gave Brutal Legend 3 stars out of 5. Their explanation for it was very extensive, and I bought it. I side with video game journalists that think that the numbering system in reviews needs to go away. Just dissect the game but do not give a score.

Most X-Box perfect scores begged for answers.

I dont know why they would give it a perfect score. I played the demo and the gameplay was not all that great. Im not saying it wasnt good... but to give it a perfect rating? I think something is fishy..

Looks like PlatinumGames gave out a special bonus with the reviewer version of the game($$$).
So G4, have you came into some cash lately?

Magazines aren't selling well lately and this helps sells. As for their website, it brings in people. Years prior a game like MGS4 or Smash Bros. Brawl might've not received a perfect score, but now that so many people are in somewhat of an economic crisis and magazines are being shutdown (EGM rest in peace), they need something that'll sell their image. Perfect scores. Like how Gameinformer uses perfect scores to sell their games at Gamestop.

Wow sounds like bull crap. S.S.B.B was good, but not perfect.

I don't think that an average of three perfect scores a year means that they're just handing them out, but even then I adhere to the Sessler philosophy of judging a game or other media by it's content and not an arbitrarily assigned number.

So a critic liked a game, and thus gave it a high score, shocking
BONERJAM
I dont get it.

I don't know about this. It does have scenes of an unclad lady in it...so then again...

It seems only the Xbox version received the 40 as well... the PS3 version scored a 38. I wonder if it's the porting issues that brought the score down. Gonna have to check out the review.

No game is perfect... cept maybe Streets of Rage 2.

Definitely raises an eyebrow. Not that I think it looks bad, but I still think I'll wait for some more reviews to come in.
