The image you see above is from a patent application dug up by Silicon Era filed by Sony for a game controller. There is very little information on the application: The thing is described as a "hand held game controller" and seems to be in development here in the States. Could it be the motion-controller Sony unveiled at E3 this year??!??... probably not.
Check out another view:

Honestly, I doubt it's the new motion controller. The lack of an analog stick makes me think this can't be the accompanying "nunchuk" to Sony's control system. After all, if there was a stick on the tip, you could put those buttons on the side and have a full-on controller that would work perfectly with a "magic wand" of some type. Of course, if motion of the entire unit was monitored, it could, essentially be a control stick in and of itself...
But, honestly, If I had to guess, (and this is total speculation) I'd say that it's some kind of controller for a quiz game of some kind, where the idea is to buzz in really quickly... but it could be, literally, anything. Time will, as they say, tell -- that is, if this thing ever sees any kind of release.

I know I'm a day late and a dollar short...buy I do see potential. Yeah, most of you people here are waiting for the Xbox "green peace 5000". Look, I understand you pain. I do... But if you keep crying about what you wouldn't use then why are you using what you are using now and not creating. You let M$ and PS control what you use. Then get off your lazy good for nothing, useless, pimpled up and down fart making toys and make something YOU would like.
Next, Xbox people here only want one thing...a system with no problems and a couple of good games. You will have two or maybe three good games (that I can think of or see), and maybe M$ will fix there problem (R.R.O.D., yeah and I'm rich). I can so see you fat people getting off your couch and trying to slap air and yelling "Hi-Yaaaa!!!" Great game by the way ;)
Next time I see someone cry about controllers then I shall see what you have to offer. Go Sony. I can see a bunch of people using that to play games like, Wheel of Fortune (spinning the wheel with one controller flashing across the screen), using it as a pointer on some games or designing a room. Precision is key, especially in graphic design or engineers who like to see truth in depth.

The first thing I thought of was that it looks like a Wiimote.
Sadly, a number of comments here make it seem that a number of you only have one thing on your mind and it isn't game-related...

Was there any info on when this was patented? Chances are we are looking at something that is many iterations back in a controllers life cycle. Maybe this is what the sphere started as... Certainly has the motion controller esque feel to it.
