Learning From Uncharted 2's Co-Op (And What Went Wrong With Resident Evil 5)

The moment a glowing triangle appeared in the corner of the screen in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, prompting me to engage in a co-op move, a mild seizure overtook my synapses. I started having flashbacks to Resident Evil 5, the only video game in recent memory I can honestly say I was forced to set down the controller in frustration and said "no, I don't want to continue, because I've had enough." Uncharted 2 does not make the same mistakes as Resident Evil 5.

Naughty Dog's approach was the right one, a proper balance act. It wouldn't be surprising to hear Naughty Dog reveal there were plans to introduce co-op into Uncharted 2's story mode, only to remove the option once they realized how much it complicates and potentially compromises the single-player experience if it's not specifically cared for every step of the way.

There's an example of this approach from a series gamers have demanded co-op from for years: Call of Duty. Infinity Ward will not include co-op in the campaign mode in Modern Warfare 2, despite acknowledging it's a popular fan request. The studio recently revealed that it attempted to implement the idea, only to discover unintended consequences for the single-player experience. Infinity Ward noted the issues but did not ditch the promise of co-op, instead developing a separate mode for it.

“We did it early on; that’s what Spec Ops [Modern Warfare 2's co-op mode] started out as -- as co-op through story,” said Infinity Ward community manager Robert Bowling in a recent interview. "But it really broke the cinematic experience, took the immersion out of it, out of the story and the pacing and everything we’d spent so long crafting. It just ruined the experience we were aiming for, so we took it out, kept the single-player for that one player intact and polished it.”

Learning From Uncharted 2's Co-Op (And What Went Wrong With Resident Evil 5)

A-ha, there it is. Separate. There are absolutely instances where dropping in multiple characters into the game world and calling that co-op works effectively (see: Halo), but what we're seeing more and more are developers whose bread and butter are rollercoaster single-player blockbuster experiences finding it difficult to just shove co-op through. Resident Evil 5 had a great many issues that would have made its co-op a more manageable experience, but by and large, it seems Capcom didn't see (or notice) the same roadblocks Infinity Ward (and perhaps Naughty Dog) encountered.

Many times throughout Uncharted 2's story, there were set pieces that made me think "man, wouldn't this be great with another person by my side?" Lo and behold, the co-op scenarios included in the game's separate co-op multiplayer are plucked straight from the game. Rather than struggling to please everybody with the single-player experience, Naughty Dog rightfully took the moments where co-op would have made sense, left that to the A.I. and dropped those experiences elsewhere.

There's no reason someone can't come up with a way to seamlessly integrate both together, maintaining the excitement possible when the focus of the game's design is solely on one person's attention, but there's ongoing evidence that's not the best solution.

LMAO @ 360 fan-boys, I have nothing against the Xbox 360 I really don't other than the fact that its over-rated a lot of times. It's good hardware(if you like replacing it every 3 months) but to be honest with you most 360 exclusives are what? Shooters, not too much diversity I'm not gonna dog the 360 cuz I'm not immature like you 360 fans so clearly have been. Don't disrespect Uncharted cuz it got better reviews than your favorite 360 game. Halo's okay(not many understand the story) Gears of War......well it's okay...I guess :/ 360 has good games not too many great games. BTW @ PS3fears360 of course Halo sold more than Uncharted 2, Uncharted has 2 games in the franchise. Halo has 5 games it has the proper publicity and fan base but even with that Uncharted is still considered a big dog in the yard. Plus your name is kinda dumb how can a system fear another system when they're both inanimate objects(@ PS3fears360)

first off three words for those of you who thinks it sucks to be a ps3 owner. GOD OF WAR. good luck playing that one on your 360. Also Ratchet and Clank. we will also get splinter cell I mean the ps3 isnt rolling over after uncharted. OH and let us not forget Metal Gear, Kojima is working on ps3 exclusive titles. Halo can only hold up for so long. I mean people get tired of being tea bagged by 7 year old kids after awhile. lol.

I was never a huge fan of co op or competitive multiplayer games. That all changed when Resistance 2 came out. That is a great co op mode. Since then, I have discovered Nazi Zombies.

Uncharted 2 is amazing! The co op is just plain fun, and competitive multiplayer is not too overwhelming for people who don't play that mode exclusively. I can't express in words just how much I love fending off waves of enemies with a couple of friends...

I would be curious to see just how badly split screen would have affected the visuals in Uncharted 2 though, as that is the one thing I think would have made the co op even better.

Looks like the PS3 fanboys are going to be stuck with Uncharted 2 and nothing else for a good long while. ODST, Forza 3, Episodes from Liberty City, and Left 4 Dead 2 to finish off the year. And then next year 360 kicks off with Mass Effect 2 and the Splinter Cell Conviction. It must really suck being a PS3 only owner.

Halo ODST sold 1,500,000 copies in 24 hrs in NA

Is doomsday still coming for us 360 owners? LMFAO!

Naughty Dog thanks Infinity Ward and Bungie amoung other developers.

    "Neil Druckmann, Naughty Dog:

thanking other developers. We try to be quite open with our technology and our process. We exchanged technology and ideas with other developers. We wanted to make sure we thanked everyone that helped us out in some way."

When I played the Demo for RE5 I was Like sooo amazed at the graphics and I thought o wow I hope the AI has my back, then in the first sign of danger The AI drops the ball and basically leave you by yourself. I felt all alone with the "co-op" character. But Uncharted 2 got it right, and it seems now that smart thinking developers(infinity Ward, Naughty Dog) are thinking about whats good for a game where as thinking how can we beat this game over here. They focus on their product how a painter or a very skilled musician would. And also In Modern Warfare and Uncharted you can run and shoot at the same time.

No its more like another reason to rub it into naysayers faces that the 360 is actually graphically on par and/or better then the PS3.

Thats why Exclusive are so important..it showcases what a system can really do...its like the cream of the crop for each console. With each PS3 exclusive dropping it is more and more aparent that the PS3 is the better console. While each PS3 exclusive always amazes and blows any 360 game out of the water....have fun counting polygons on still screens on multiplat games, to justify the "superiorty" of the 360./laughable

honestly, co op is one of the main things i like in games. LOCAL FRICKEN CO OP. jebus, remember the good old days when local was the thing? now its online this, online that. dont get me wrong about it, its just that im not lucky enough to have friends with the same console, let alone the same game

That screams of fanboyism finally feeling like their own purchase is worth defending. Anyone who said those things is a moron and not worth responding to like this...obviously extra disc space is nice, and obviously the Cell has its pros AND CONS (noted by some mulitplatform games that look better on 360)...but what Uncharted 2 REALLY shows off is how talented the people at Naughty Dog are, and Sony benefits a lot more from having such a great developer continue to offer exclusive support than it does from all that hardware you're raving about.

Developers have been making separate co-op modes in their games for a while. Resistance 2 had it, and I can remember a similar mode in No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy in H.A.R.M.'s Way. It worked great for those games, but why is it only now that the idea is getting so much attention?

uncharted 2 is like the crysis of consoles, there arent enough words to describe how great this game is. It should be a requirement that all development companies play it to see what makes a fantastic game.

@ upstart - the beta and what was released are two different things, hence the name beta. Play the real thing before you make us all dumber with your uninformed opinion.

So far, it's GOTY in my opinion, be it single player, multiplayer or co-op. Bravo Naughty Dog.

I thought I was alone, but I totally agree with you upstart. This game is a Gears of war/ COD 4 mash up and it does a bad job trying to be both games. All it has going for it is good graphics. The bullet physics and 2 hits for a melee kill are just 2 of many issues.

All those people heaping praise on uncharted 2 wake up while the story is excellent and it looks great i played the beta and the multiplayer needs heaps of work there are glitches in the maps and there version of capture the flag chain reaction is a fizzer sessler wake up what games such as killzone 2 and zelda ocarina of time they are way better games than drakes uncharted 2 ever will be and about the arrogant attitude of the developers at naughty dog . Dismiss co op at your own peril naughty dog it is the future of gaming .Borderlands has better on line than drakes uncharted 2 . The only difference is advertising drakes has been promoted to the max and borderlands hasn't.

I'd just like to know what you thought was wrong with RE5 co-op. I personally really liked that game, and I didn't think there was anything particularly terrible about it. I will say though, that even though I haven't played it, I bet Uncharted is freaking amazing.
