The moment a glowing triangle appeared in the corner of the screen in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, prompting me to engage in a co-op move, a mild seizure overtook my synapses. I started having flashbacks to Resident Evil 5, the only video game in recent memory I can honestly say I was forced to set down the controller in frustration and said "no, I don't want to continue, because I've had enough." Uncharted 2 does not make the same mistakes as Resident Evil 5.
Naughty Dog's approach was the right one, a proper balance act. It wouldn't be surprising to hear Naughty Dog reveal there were plans to introduce co-op into Uncharted 2's story mode, only to remove the option once they realized how much it complicates and potentially compromises the single-player experience if it's not specifically cared for every step of the way.
There's an example of this approach from a series gamers have demanded co-op from for years: Call of Duty. Infinity Ward will not include co-op in the campaign mode in Modern Warfare 2, despite acknowledging it's a popular fan request. The studio recently revealed that it attempted to implement the idea, only to discover unintended consequences for the single-player experience. Infinity Ward noted the issues but did not ditch the promise of co-op, instead developing a separate mode for it.
“We did it early on; that’s what Spec Ops [Modern Warfare 2's co-op mode] started out as -- as co-op through story,” said Infinity Ward community manager Robert Bowling in a recent interview. "But it really broke the cinematic experience, took the immersion out of it, out of the story and the pacing and everything we’d spent so long crafting. It just ruined the experience we were aiming for, so we took it out, kept the single-player for that one player intact and polished it.”

A-ha, there it is. Separate. There are absolutely instances where dropping in multiple characters into the game world and calling that co-op works effectively (see: Halo), but what we're seeing more and more are developers whose bread and butter are rollercoaster single-player blockbuster experiences finding it difficult to just shove co-op through. Resident Evil 5 had a great many issues that would have made its co-op a more manageable experience, but by and large, it seems Capcom didn't see (or notice) the same roadblocks Infinity Ward (and perhaps Naughty Dog) encountered.
Many times throughout Uncharted 2's story, there were set pieces that made me think "man, wouldn't this be great with another person by my side?" Lo and behold, the co-op scenarios included in the game's separate co-op multiplayer are plucked straight from the game. Rather than struggling to please everybody with the single-player experience, Naughty Dog rightfully took the moments where co-op would have made sense, left that to the A.I. and dropped those experiences elsewhere.
There's no reason someone can't come up with a way to seamlessly integrate both together, maintaining the excitement possible when the focus of the game's design is solely on one person's attention, but there's ongoing evidence that's not the best solution.

Really...are people still arguing over which console is better...Who cares if you already bought it? I got a PS3 and love playing it, I've loved playing it since day one. I've played the 360 (Halo and Gears) it was fun too, both look great in the graphics dept in general...some of the ports were horrendous and did look better on the 360. It happens, bad development is bad development. I will say this Sony can learn a lot about online from 360 Live cause Home is whack. I'm a Sony guy because they have my two favorite franchises God of War and MGS. Who cares about what someone else owns...they like it.
Why would anybody have to justify why they spent the money they earned, stole, etc....
UNCHARTED 2 is awesome in all aspects...working on my second play through...best single player experience since inFamous and best until GOW3 (can't wait).

Uncharted 2 Game Of The Year no contenders
RE5 co-op sucked
All fanboys shut up
that is all
Pwnproof
iam sorry but no matter what console you used,RE5 sucked!!! and thats coming from someone who bought a gamecube just to play RE4 and LOVED IT! Uncharted2 is a masterpiece and the co-op is so great i think every developer should not only take notes on one part of the game but all of the game because everything about it smokes any effin game ever brought to any table!!

RE5 was good if you played it with real partner. I played the entire game nearly two times with my wife using the split screen coop, and we had a great time. The problem I saw was that when I tried to play alone, the game's AI partner was not up to snuff, and it detracted from the single player experience.

Man Naughty Dog is by far my favorite game developer

I have a 360 but not a PS3, should I get one to play Uncharted 2? Is it that good?

Personally, I enjoyed RE 5's co-op mode. It was fun. I played it with my brothers ( who live 600
miles away) and had a great time! I love uncharted too, but I think it would've been better if I could
share the actual story. I would like to say that the ps3 is a horrible system to try and play online with people. What's up with not letting us voice chat unless we are playing the same game? I'd rather pay a little bit of money to have a tighter, more user friendly experience like LIVE. Don't get me wrong I love
my ps3 ( I play it twice as much as my 360) but jesus they could really do something about the online
interface. GO CO OP!!!

All this hatred that surfaces after the release of a great game is so dumb. I can just picture Playstation and Xbox sitting back sipping coffee while laughing at your ridiculous posts.

Resident Evil 5 sucked, I'm not sure what happened but the 2007 trailer I believe from Tokyo had Chris playing by himself, doing things that were never realized in the RE5 we got. It is my personal theory that pressure from the fan base and internet blogs forced Capcom to rethink the game to include co-op. I want to play the single player RE5. *Tears* I miss my Resident Evil series.

Good ol' e-peen. You all need to get over this ps3/360 BS. Both of them have advantages that the other does not. 360 is obviously better in the FPS/online aspect, where as the ps3 is good for adventure/unique games (i.e uncharted and little big planet). Let PS3 fans bask in their glory of getting a great game.

on a scale of one to ten for terror, clowns would be a ten.
(If you don't know what I'm talking about, then you haven't played enough of Uncharted 2 to give a fully viable opinion about the game.)

Slow news day, nothing new all morning.

i can't play co-op mode because none of my PS3 friends have Uncharted 2. That sucks it sounds good. Oh well.

this game looks great and i really want to get it but i need to save my money for windows 7 and call of duty modern warfare 2 but i think im going to buy this instead along with CoDMW2 over 7

Those of us who own Uncharted 2 own one of the best games ever made. Those who don't own the game should. Oh, and no frozen PS3 in this house! Haters, just go play halo 3.5 and stop putting down a game you probably don't even own.

As Left 4 Dead aptly shows it is possible to produce an incredibly sublime co-op experience that lives within a narrative. The gameplay has to support it on all levels so that players have a reason to share the experience with one another.

Your pretty sad you know that... How well do "ALL" 1st party 360 games sell outside the USA....? You know.... there is money to be made outside our little country. Just because a game sells less here in the USA doesn't mean that it sucks like you seem to convince yourself with. Help yourself with realizing that the world is a larger place.

I must say that Naughty Dog did a great job. I've been playing Uncharted 2 as much as I've been able to this last week. In fact, I wish I were playing it now instead of watching a movie and reading this article. I'd give the game a 10/10 and I know I'll be playing it for months to come. I'm 65% through the campaign and it has been great so far. ND made the right choice keeping it single player. It is a great cinematic roller coaster ride that wouldn't work with 2 people. The co-op additions are a ton of fun (I've spent more hours in co-op than on the campaign) and the multiplayer is great also. I really like the separation of the 3 modes - single player campaign, multiplayer, and co-op modes. Gears 2 did a good job of that also with the campaign, horde, and multiplayer. If it works, co-op campaigns are fun, but if not, throw in a separate co-op mode. I'm glad to see Modern Warfare 2's Spec Ops mode. It should add another fun leg to an already awesome game. Anything that adds re-playability to a game helps me swallow the $60 price tag.

I play x-box games all the time. Just picked this up for the PS3 and I am floored. Damn good! Worth every penny from me turning in brutal legend for it.
