With Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Infinity Ward is finally bringing a long requested feature to its shooter universe: co-op. The Spec Ops mode is the studio's take on co-op, a separate mode with missions designed exclusively for the co-op experience. The additional effort is appreciated, but what about the single-player campaign? Why not just add more players to that? According to an interview with Infinity Ward community manager Robert Bowling at VG247, the developer tried that.
“We did it early on; that’s what Spec Ops started out as -- as co-op through story,” said Bowling. "But it really broke the cinematic experience, took the immersion out of it, out of the story and the pacing and everything we’d spent so long crafting. It just ruined the experience we were aiming for, so we took it out, kept the single-player for that one player intact and polished it.”
At least we can scratch the obvious off: why didn't Infinity Ward try to make campaign work in co-op? They did. I'm a fan of having separate co-op missions, anyway.

I think I'll like what they ended up with, seperate missions then in SP.
seem like more bang for your buck. Hope they keep rankings so you can tell what team of friends did best.

Best Co-op game ever was Saints Row 2. Everything was co-op.

I don't mind having a separate co-op campaign because in my mind that adds more content as opposed to making a great single player campaign and then throwing in a second player just because you can, which most games do. However, if you build a campaign with two players in mind (a la Gears of War), then the co-op works great and at worst the single player might be hindered by bad AI (a la Army of Two). But if they are made separately, then one will not effect the other and both can be enjoyed by their own merits.

I feel the same way. For some games co-op makes the story feel watered down. I just like to play alone and enjoy the experience when it comes to call of duty. A separate co-op was a good choice.

From what i've read of the co-op experience, they made the right call.

I think is a little overly negative take on it. Another article I read had a quote explaining that IW had a lot of setting and set piece ideas that were cool, but didn't fit the story or narrative so they became stand alone SpecOps. I dig this idea. "Mile High Club" didn't fit COD4 which is why it was a random epilogue. How much cooler then to have a whole string of these random-but-cool experiences. Stating from the beginning that one Spec Op doesn't have to fit or make sense with the others gives IW a lot of freedom.

i'm glad they would not sacrifice the experience of the campaign for co-op. it would have been nice if they could of made it work but they could not so they added Spec-ops so it all works out.

Booo! Insomniac used that excuse for leaving co-op out of the campaign, and the community was pissed. People could care less if the cut scenes make less sense while playing with a friend, all they want to do is play WITH A FRIEND. The polished single player experience is still there. I was gonna buy this game. It would have been the first COD game I actually bought, but eff that.

boo. That was the excuse Insomniac had about leaving the campaign co-op-less, and everyone was pissed that it wasn't there. People could care less if the cut scenes didn't make sense while playing co-op as long as they could play with a friend.
