Sony PlayStation 3 ps3It’s been a long time coming, but it seems the next PlayStation 3 firmware update might finally bring cross-game chat to the console. However, as Kotaku reports, this is in no way official at this point. The info was revealed on a PlayStation forum by “‘Naughty Dog Dev’ ReklissAbandon after being asked about the prospect of enemy spectating in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

Obviously, being able to relay to your teammates the whereabouts of enemies wouldn’t be the fairest thing in the world. However, ReklissAbandon went on to say, “But I will suggest it anyway. Not to mention that the next PS3 firmware update is going to allow cross game chat. So if players use that instead of in game communication then they would also be able to communicate enemies’ positions."

This isn’t so much a “Can you believe it?!” kind of revelations as much as it’s a “Well, it’s about time!” one, but for PS3 users, it’s still good to hear. The post has since been removed from the forum, and Sony has responded with the expected “We don’t comment on speculation.” And now we play the waiting game.

Allright. For those people that don't get it...cross game chat is nice for when you log on to the psn and boot up a game then notice some friends are online playing something else. You can talk to them about who should switch and what the plan is for the game day rather than have to type out stupid texts back and forth.

Also, say someone is trying to find a better room cause the room your in sucks, you can talk to them and once they are in and confirm its a good room then you all can jump in. Trying to coordinate this type fo stuff thru texts is ridiculous.

Yeah like i really need to talk to someone in another game while i am trying to play elimination in Uncharted 2, that makes sense....NOT. God xbots are pathetic.

P.S. Guild members are jokes too, I love playing against them because when you beat them they try to rationalize why they lost. Such pathetic virgins.

Yeah for whoever says that XBL is better than PSN i want reasons why. I had both until my xbox broke for the fourth time and i can say i had little to no lag on my PS3 but a lot of lag on XBL, plus XBL was nothing special.

This has been on xbox LIVE since the original xbox. $ony is behind in the times. And the PSN is free only because it sucks. We literally get everything first including Modern Warfare 2. And I don't see a custom PS3. Have fun homos.

Maybe they'll finally let you play music while playing a game.

Cross-game or "Anytime" voice chat is, as the earlier comment stated, already a part of Xbox LIVE. Standard voice chat we all know has been apart of it, for the past 7 years. Sony should have had this as a mandatory inclusion with the evolution of the PSN on PS3 from the start has the others have said.

The one user earlier stated that they don't know why it matters to people. The short answer: Talking to friends is better than total silence. Besides, you can talk about anything, as you can probably guess from the clan tag before my name, clan mates use it extensively. I understand the Bluetooth aspect for the headsets, but an included one would have let the consumer know that you cared or you intended your network to be a robust "living" place (PS Home does NOT count!!) Voice chat CAN be used in Home but its just plain, I dunno, HOKEY. Simple solution: Pimp out the XMB and the PSN store with sweet designs or even features unique to Sony Playstation, and ditch Home, then competition is gonna start to get fierce!

As an Xbox LIVE user from the beta, I can tell you from experience voice chat is a very compelling reason for you want to enjoy your online experience on the console much more! I was really hoping for Sony come out of the gate with it, but better late than never. Also consider packing in that Bluetooth headset with the system now, that will encourage users to take advantage of it more quickly. I pick games solely for their MP components now. I have no loyalty one way or the other as I have both systems, and Xbox LIVE has been far and away the best experience for me. So Sony, let's see if you can change that, these updates are getting better and better, but give me more of a reason to choose PS3 over 360, network-wise!

Why has no one posted "You can't believe everything you read on the internet, that's how World War I got started."

    finally

ps3 will soon have all the features - and probably more - than xbl and be totally free.

MS better start rethinking their "charge to play" mentality.

excuse me, while i go play uncharted 2 online FOR FREE

Another denial comment by Sony? That's as good as saying "YES". Remember how they denied the existence of PS3 and PSPGO? This is one of those days at Sony. XD

This is not going to crash my PS3 again, will it? Hey, also heard a nasty rumor that Sony is going to start charging for online services. That's going to be a treat. Anyone here have any investigative skills to check if this is true?

Seriously? custom soundtracks is the only thing holding you off the PSN? seriously? I mean dude, this is VIDEO GAMES, not audio games.

At least PS3 users don't have to PAY to use Cross Game Chat. . . if it comes out ;)

Now all they need is the ability to play music during games and PSN will be worth my money.

So while I am chatting with my buddies who arnt in the same game with me, the people on the game that I am playing are screaming at me to turn around b/c I am about to get killed, but I cant hear them b/c I am talking to people that ARE NOT PLAYING THE SAME GAME I AM. What good does that do for me or the team that I am playing with?

"oh, geez, I just got my neck snapped. WHY DIDNT ANYONE TELL ME? oh, wait, you guys are playing something else" sounds kinda stupid to me.

there are many things that the ps3 does that the x360 doesnt since day one. the main one is not charging me to play my games online. can you say that about the 360?

talk to me again when you can.

As long as they fix the current firmware issues they've gotten sued for and been exposed for(In Australia!), then sure, go for it, Sony.

I'll be happy when they add it. I know when My friend and i play Gears and Halo on his 360 we always end up using it because of all the 12 year old racists and griefers on XBL. Who wants to hear that crap.

Its funny because why would they add this more than half of the PS3 owners dont have mics LOL last time I was playing some CoD4 and no one had a Mic I guess they dont want to spend $50 on a wireless one

Well i don't know about anyone else but my ps3 menu really laggs alot! it takes me about 5 minutes just to send a message on psn. it works fine when not in game. think they should fix this problem before adding more feature to make more slower.
