It has been a trying few months for a series of brave and levelheaded gamers who took it upon themselves to shun a highly anticipated title from one of the most revered developers in the industry, based on an in no way absurd sense of entitlement with regards to Left 4 Dead support. But as of October 21st, boycotters of Valve’s Left 4 Dead 2 will stop fighting the good fight, GamePolitics reports.
Given how reasonable the group’s arguments were for boycotting L4D2, it’s hardly surprising that in the disbandment announcement letter posted over at Steam, two of the group’s leaders (Agent of Chaos and Walking_Target) address their fellow boycotters with a tone that suggests some serious delusions of grandeur in terms of their effectiveness and relevance concerning Valve’s commitment to future L4D support. As Agent of Chaos explains:
“We have accomplished everything we can on our manifesto. We’ve been dealing with Valve ever since our group started, then we met them in-person and now we’re at the point of concluding our discussions. Our goal wasn’t to steer people away from L4D2, it was to get Valve’s attention and have them support original L4D. We succeeded and that’s where our mission ends; nothing more or less.”
There are several things worth noting about these statements. First off, take a look at the boycotters’ original demands:
- That Valve honor its commitment to release ongoing periodic content for Left 4 Dead.
- That Left 4 Dead 2 not be released as a stand-alone, full-priced sequel but as either a free update to Left 4 Dead or an expansion with full compatibility with basic Left 4 Dead owners.
- That Left 4 Dead owners be given discounts for Left 4 Dead 2, should it be released as premium content.
As you can see, the only one of these that will end up happening is the first one, and that was something Valve was planning to do all along; it hadn’t provided any details on the recently released Crash Course (or future DLC for that matter), because it wasn’t ready to discuss it. So for the boycotters to suggest that they had anything to do with Valve “deciding” to continue supporting L4D is utter nonsense, and claiming victory for it is even more so.
What’s interesting about the other two requests is that if you go to the group’s original manifesto announcement, those requests are no longer listed. The page says it was “updated 10.10.09 for relevance,” which I guess is code for, “Now that Valve has released a fresh batch of L4D DLC as well as info about its plans for future content (which it has been planning all along), and considering the company was gracious enough to invite us for a studio tour despite our insulting criticisms of Valve’s design approach for L4D2, let's make it seem like we ‘won’ even though we clearly didn’t.”
The other funny part about the aforementioned quote is that the original manifesto clearly states, “Therefore, we - the members of this Left 4 Dead 2 Boycott - promise to abstain from the purchase of Left 4 Dead 2 until our requests are addressed.” Yet now, the group claims, “Our goal wasn’t to steer people away from L4D2, it was to get Valve’s attention and have them support original L4D.” Backtracking and delusion don’t really get any more hilarious than that…Oh, except they do, thanks to the following comments from Walking_Target:
“As a collective we have done more than achieve a few goals, we have paved the way for Developer-Community relations in the future. No matter what the press or other gamers say, we have made an indelible mark upon the future of this industry. You should all be proud, we certainly are.”
I could spend the next few minutes pointing out just how bat-s#*& crazy these statements are, but I think they pretty much speak for themselves. I mean…wow.
Any last thoughts on the L4D2 boycott? Am I totally out of line in thinking that these people are giving themselves way too much credit for something they had no influence on in the first place?

Rofl. what idiots.. and they did nothing that i have seen yet. Also, when is this new content coming? After L4D2 gets its first DLC? -.- It should have been here ages ago BEFORE l4d2. I see no reason in people buying/playing L4D1 anymore, seems like a waste of time and money if they're still going to add stuff. For god sakes it took them 6 months to release custom map content, it hasn't even had time to fully bloom. Just doesn't feel like the quality I'm used to seeing from valve, seems like they rushed L4D1 so they could start L4D2 before it was even finished.
The least they could have done is given you a discount if you owned L4D1 or knocked it down to $30
Regardless, I'm still going to buy L4D2, but probably not til its on sale or takes a price drop to $30, don't want to end up in the same boat as i was with L4D1.

Modest much? They obviously didn't think this out. These are some pretty tough economic times; what if Valve couldn't afford to release little, free, DlC every 4 months? The most annoying part of this, is the fact that they act like Valve OWES them free DLC. Valve doesn't owe you anything. The boycotters should be grateful that Valve works as hard as they do for their fans. They were able to support a $25 million ad campaign for L4D2. Do you think they could make that much for a little DLC and a fixed bug?

I will not be getting L4D2.

just curious....how do you boycott something that isn't even being sold yet. It ended before it even began, so really how can you accomplish something when you haven't even done anything.

I myself am a PC Gamer fanboy. It's easy to see that PC and Console gamers have totally different mind sets. I'm not saying that's a bad thing. But as a PC Gamer most of us are not used to the idea of paying for content after the release of a game. Most Console gamers are used to having to pay for everything. Like XBox Live, DLC and so on. So it's much easier for them to except the idea of paying for this freshly pumped out sequel. Since content hosting on the console side is all supported by the first parties it's fair to have to pay for it to make up for the bandwidth and what not. However on the PC side patches and other additional content is usually hosted by a third party so they are normally free or of low cost (or just straight up pirated). So other than PC expansions (via discs) for games paying for new content (via the internet) is a relatively new idea on the PC side of gaming.
I personally never signed up for the petition myself however I was never really for idea of an immediate sequel for Left 4 Dead. But now that I see that L4D2 is much more than just a few new maps like in a typical Valve patch. The new game has plenty fundamental differences that really make it stayed out from the first game. That is why I believe it's alright for Valve to do what they are doing and their PC fans should really fallow suit.

Well, how seriously can you take someone who goes by "Agent of Chaos" anyway? Kid, stick to playing video games and leave the supposed boycotting to causes and concerns that are worthwhile.
There seems to be enough changes, updates and additions to the new game to make it a worthwhile buy.
As far as the complaints about idiots on multiplayer, well, they're there for pretty much every game. It's the main reason why I only play online with people I know or play locally. Nothing like the original with 4 friends gathered around the TV.

For some reason these guy's actions remind me of that South Park where Canada strikes, and then when strike leader Mr. Aboutman (pronounced a-BOOT-man)realizes he isn't going to win, he changes the terms to make himself look competent. How aboot we put these two on an ice flow and set them adrift, eh?
Oh second, they never even had a real boycott. That would imply L4D2 is there on the shelves for them to abstain from buying. Epic fail boycotters, I have only this to say... I'm not you're buddy, guy.
papajon555

One time I visited their steam chatroom and asked them why they were boycotting the game. They insulted me so I left. Then they posted on my profile "lololol ragequit we win!!" And then I deleted that comment and blocked all communication with the guy who posted it.

Well, at least they'll shut up now.

Wow. Seriously. Drop the topic.
G4's bashing of those boycotters is more drawn out than an Episode of The Hills.

When I first saw Left 4 Dead 2 I was mad as heck, so I know what it feels like. In a week I was over it and googleing L4D2 every night.
