Wrestling icon Captain Lou Albano has died. A key figure in the wrestling resurgence of the 1980s, Captain Lou was known for his prowess in the ring in the 1960s, his theatrical antics as a manager in the WWF in the 80s, his mainstream cross-over success in movies and TV and his impressive, rubber-band-laden beard. Gamers know him best as Mario in 1980s cartoon show The Super Mario Brothers Super Show. Albano passed away this morning at his home in Mount Vernon, NY. He was 76 years old.
Albano started out in wrestling as half of tag-team The Sicilians, but found his true calling as a manager. His over-the-top outfits and theatrics ushered in the 1980s' "Rock and Wrestling Connection." Albano guided 15 different tag teams and 4 singles competitors to championship gold.
Albano starred in dozens of TV shows and movies throughout his long career, including TV cop show Miami Vice, wrestling flick Body Slam, and Brian De Palma's Wise Guys, although he was best-known for his appearance in the videos for Cyndi Lauper's hits 'Girls Just Want to Have Fun,' 'She Bop' and 'Time After Time'.
Recently, Captain Lou Albano appeared as a playable character in THQ's WWE Legends of Wrestlemania video game, but The Captain's most well-known connection to gaming is his portrayal of video game plumber Mario in 1980s cartoon show The Super Mario Brothers Super Show. Check out the YouTube videos below the cut for a look at Captain Lou in action:
In honor of the Captain, we will be doing the Mario all day long.

How did I know you guys would include the clip where Mario says "F you" to Luigi (:25 second mark)?

Honestly, I had no idea he did the Super Mario Bros Super Show. Thats Cool. However, its unfortunate that hes passed. He was bad ass in WWF(screw wwe), and his beard is the teh bomb!

I was just thinking about this show the other day!!
This makes me sad. I'll have to think up a tribute or something now.

It's very easy to do the Mario. Finally, a dance craze I can be part of!

Did Lou Albano just tell me I'm going to hell?

That drug ad would be a great jumping off point for a new M-rated Mario game where we catch up with Mario after 15 years of booze, drugs and depression (brought on by being left by Princess Peach for Bowser, and Luigi's mysterious "suicide"), and now he's forced to do PSAs and other random bottom rung entertainment gigs for crap pay. And then the game would basically just be a series of bad trips where he believes he's back in the original Super Mario Bros. game, only he's just running around the streets of New York like a crazy person. I've already pitched this idea to several developers so don't bother trying to steal it. I know it's gold.

If my beard were longer (had to trim it up), I would've put a few rubber bands on it. :(
