'Spider-Man 4': Sam Raimi Talks Villains And Story

No one can ever accuse director, Sam Raimi of shying away from fragile franchises attached to legions of hard-to-please, unforgiving fans. As most are aware, Raimi will begin shooting the fourth Spider-Man film this March. Additionally, (besides the 22 other movies he has in developmental stages,) he's taking on another whopper of a franchise in the World of Warcraft. Raimi recently had some words with MTV regarding the his mega-franchise with the wall crawler, as he loosely discusses ideas and directions. While we're far away from specifics, Raimi does seem to have a general idea regarding how he wants to approach the proverbial minefield that this franchise has somewhat become.

The film is a mere 5 months away from shooting, and it does seem that the spot for the villain(s) have been filled. By whom however, remains a mystery. On board creatively, is Gary Ross, who is working on the much-discussed re-write of the script. (Ross will eventually move on to the Venom film after completing a spy thriller based on Donald Hamilton's series of books with character, Matt Helm, with Bradley Cooper rumored to star.) Raimi is looking to rebound after the critical disaster of the third Spider-Man film.

When MTV conducted a poll, asking which villains fans would like to see in the upcoming sequel, the results were closely in favor of The Lizard with 29% with Carnage coming in second at 26%. With these number brought to Raimi's attention, he responded that he did "love" the Lizard, but was "less familiar" with Carnage. While obviously unable to outright reveal who the identity of the villain, one could judge by his reaction that it is likely one of the two. Raimi further elaborated on the selection process :

"What we're trying to do right now is really understand the journey Peter is going to go on this time and have the villain maybe be a counter to that growth, something that he has to overcome," Raimi said. "Or maybe he has to grow in a way to overcome the villain, because there always seem to be stories of coming of age, of a young man growing up and learning things about life, so once we are identifying the exact movement that Peter has to grow to, I think the villain—and we're trying this right now; we're trying to choose a villain based on who would be the proper counter to that growth, so we really have dramatic conflict."

Are we left with any clues? If Spider-Man 3 had never existed on the earth, I would have sworn that this would mean Venom was our guy. While there are plenty of storylines from the Spider-Man lore that are not yet covered in the films, which have forced Spidey to grow in the way Raimi described (the death of Gwen Stacy, buried alive by Kraven, marriage, being cloned, etc.,) at this point, the universe of the Spider-Man movies is so jumbled, that it could conceivably be anyone. Did we learn anything? I think we did get a new perspective on how overall theme of the film.

I personally think that the villain should be the Lizard, based on the fact that he is an iconic Spidey villain and the fact that the Curt Connors character is already set in place from the previous films and ready to go. Also, in regards to Carnage...no disrespect intended towards those who voted for him, but I can't image how, given the general consensus that Venom was handled so very poorly in Spider-Man 3, that the vote ended up being this closely split on seeing Carnage get a treatment in the same series. (Really?? You want to see Carnage after all of THAT? Really??)

However, this may be Raimi's last go with the wall-crawler, and he could be looking to properly close out the franchise (at least, his version of it) before it gets rebooted by whoever Sony hires next. Therefore, what seems logical may not necessarily play a role, here. At the end of the day, Raimi is a genuine legend, and we should be hoping that he knocks this one out of the park. We know that he has the talent necessary.

They should make neither Carnage nor Lizard the villian. They should have the Vulture, Bruce Campbell Mysterio , or the Scorpion. Incidentally, in the comics the scorpion Matt Gargon becomes the new Venom, so in the film Raimi can use the same actor and have the character cross over into the Venom film that's in development.

Raimi should run with the formerly rumored plot involving the Lizard cutting lose in the city and Kraven the Hunter hoping to capture him and ultimately, Spiderman himself. That way, they can get around the fact that the guy that plays the Lizard is not really an A-list star and also garner sympathy from the audience. Then, they can get a bigger named star to play Kraven (Gerard Butler maybe???)and maybe touch upon the Kraven storyline where he "kills" Spidey. Well, that's my two-cents...

I know you guys keep saying you want the Lizard, but seriously he doesn't seem like that interesting of a character. He becomes a big giant lizard man and destroys crap, big whoop. I would much rather see the Maximum Carnage story arc done, but I know that can't happen cause Raimi will screw it up since you can't really use that arc an expect to keep a PG-13 movie. The one villain that I think would work completely would be Mysterio especially if played by Bruce Campbell. I think Sam and Bruce could have a lot of fun with that character and make something really good.

Carnage Looks B.A. But Lizard Man Is B.A.. I Can't Choose. Carnage Would Be Way Cooler But Lizard Man Would Have A Better Plot In The Story. All-in-All I'd Pick Lizard Man.

I think he could do it with the lizard, the effect it has on his family, and how since the last time we saw them MJ and Spidey are back together and planning a wedding. However the same thing of can I be a good husband etc seemed to take up the last movie and partly caused the fail. I could almost see Bruce Campbell as Cassidy, with a slightly altered story where he is getting ready to be executed and a surviving piece of the venom symbiote spawns before dying and the new symbiote spawned from death finds him for carnage, or mysterio arc with b campbell where his last two appearances was him actually gathering info on PP and the personas were actually his illusions,so that he can easily get to PP/SM.

Spider-man 1 and 2 were good I'll admit.Spider-man 3 was okay.I did'nt like the whole new goblin thing.Carnage for Spider-man 4 really I mean you kinda of killed off Venom so it kinda has no point seeing as the two usually team up together against our famous wall crawler.Black Cat would'nt be that bad but if they were going into that direction then you might as well introduce King-pin,and Rhino .If they chose the Lizard then I would have Kraven in the movie as well. Black Cat is a pretty good person to put in but I wonder if their going to go for Felica getting the Super Soilder Serum from the animated series or are they going to go for the comic version.

Man some people got some animosity towards a great franchise I mean Spider-man 3 is not that bad. It's no Wolverine or Transformers 2 nowhere near as bad. If you ask me I'd say Sony definitely pushed Venom on Sam Raimi at the last minute and forced a rewrite to shoehorn another toy out of the property. Raimi is a self proclaimed Spidey fan and perfect for this franchise.

Villain wise I'm all for the Lizard and Black Cat in the same movie together it could really work if you think about it. Mysterio is a close second but only if played by Bruce Campbell, but Carnage would never work in a PG-13 movie and also he just plain old sucks as a villain(his whole gimmick is he's crazy. WOW! what originality, what charcter depth(I'm being sarcastic)) oh also if you do carnage you have to do Avengers in the same movie and that wouldn't work.

So really guys lay off of Raimi the man, when in control, knows what he's doing let's hope Sony doesn't force Carnage on him and if they do decide to reboot the Spidey franchise let's hope they don't use Joe Quesada as the main villain we all know how that battle ended LOL! LONG LIVE THE LEAGUE!!!!

I already saw signs of the Lizard being used in the next flim because Dr. Connor had his hand behind his back in the last film so if they don't use the Lizard I will be shocked, a little pissed, and confused!

I, for one, have faith in Sam Raimi. Spider-Man 1 and 2 were fantastic, 2 especially. If he's done it (twice) before, he can definitely do it again. Spider-Man 3 was enjoyable and entertaining, but it was definitely not up to par with the previous two. Personally, I don't think they should have ever introduced the Black Suit or Venom, at least not this early in the franchise. They should have either dedicated an entire movie to that story arc, or drop it altogether. Sandman should've been the main focus of 3. I wish they had spent more time on him, because he's a character that deserves more than he got.

For Spider-Man 4, I honestly don't know what villain they should use. The Lizard would be the obvious choice...I love the idea of having the Lizard and then have Kraven come to hunt both the Lizard and Spider-Man, although the overall plot would kind of be a dead giveaway for the whole movie.

If I were in charge, I would most likely do the Lizard/Kraven story arc, because it takes two villains and seams them together smoothly (unlike that of Spider-Man 3). Although it would be kind of an obvious choice for the story, I would do something shocking or completely unexpected (within the realm of reality) to stir it up a bit to keep the story less obvious. But hey, I'm not in charge so who cares what I think, haha. But still, that's what I would do.
