Wii Play: North America's Best Selling Game Of The Decade, Wii Fit Creeps Towards Second

According to NPD numbers, Nintendo’s collection of nine motion-controlled mini-games, Wii Play is the best selling game of the decade in North America, IGN.UK reports. With 11.1 million copies sold since it was released back in 2007, Wii Play has bested other gaming juggernauts, including Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Wii Fit, GTA: Vice City and Mario Kart Wii, in that order.

The other interesting bit is that Nintendo’s exercise title, Wii Fit is threatening to pass GTA: San Andreas for the second spot. Currently, Wii Fit is only around 350,000 units behind San Andreas, but Nintendo fears that the upcoming Wii Fit Plus could very well stifle Wii Fit sales, keeping the game locked in the third spot. Then again, some people might be put off by the $99 price tag for Wii Fit Plus and decide that the $89 Wii Fit will do just fine for the time being. Of course, until the official figures come in, it’s really anyone’s guess how the Wii Fit-San Andreas fight will end up.

Are you surprised by the top five sellers list? Do you think Wii Fit will eventually surpass San Andreas? Do you care?

I'll gladly admit that this makes me lose respect for Nintendo. I used to love their games and now all they have to do is make trash such as Wii Play and make a killer off it...leaving the TRUE fans of Nintendo in the dust. I mean, why make a good, quality game when they can make low-quality games and get more money off them?

Never got Wii play, not much into mini games. Wii fit is great, but at times unnecessary and I can see it selling more but fit plus is already out and is sure to take wii fit's sells. I love that list, GTA and nintendo, no crappy halo, or gears, or any MS/Sony crap that's nothing more then blood in guns, such a shame that they still sell well.

I am a bit surprised only in that Mario Kart Wii is not that good, because the program cheats. But hey these numbers are from sales numbers and not a measurement of fun. I own all of these, yes even lost 10 lbs. on the Wii Fit while eating better. Wii Fit Plus is a lot of fun too! I really love the GTA series much more than nintendo's games though.

But yeah the numbers are just numbers and not a measurement of depth or fun.

Surprised, yes. Wii Fit surpass GTA? Don't know or care.

well wii fit sold well because Nintendo was advertising two things: 1. The next revolution in how we play games 2. A way to stay fit you fat soccer moms.
As for Wii Play, I only see people buying that trash because of the wiimote.

Anyways if there's news about Nintendo it better be about the new Zelda game or some new 3rd party game that looks revolutionary

Personally (from a strategic business stand-point), I think the long-term business ramifications of all of this Wii-sales-mania bodes favorably for Nintendo's on-going console-creation interests.

Think of the financial implications for Nindy's investment capital (-in leiu of the tech-saviness and purchase interests of the general gaming market in the near future). The've made tanker-loads of money from the Wii, Gameboy and DS product lines- with most of it being at high-clip profit margins because the products don't really cost that much to make. Folks (like myself) that complain that they are making child-toy-novelties while seemingly disregarding the "core" demographic that exists tend to overlook the notion that Nindy has and will have more than enough investment capital for the R&D of their next console iteration (-which, I believe WILL be a more souped-up HD experience delivering machine). And, by the time this happens, more and more folks will have HDTVs in their homes with high-speed internet connections as well.

Basically, Nindy is in a perpetual position to continue their stranglehold on the console market going into the future simply because they will be able to afford to do so, and most folks by that time will be technologically prepared to ride with it. If and when Nindy deems that the Wii is no longer the juggernaut that it has been since it's initial release, best believe that they'll have something else- something much more compelling waiting in the wings.

Of course, I could be completely ass-backward in my thinking about this, and Nintendo is just merely interested in competing in the "casual" market forever while resting on the laurels of their current success ::sarcasm::

That is a pretty cool game, just played it a couple of times but with Wii Fit being in second, it ain't a surprise, not at all.

You gotta give Nintendo props, they know how to make money and invest in it pretty well, pretty smart company if you tell me and I agree, the hardcore gaming industry ain't too forgiving, look at me! :)

But to be serious, I don't think anything will change in terms of how much or how well the Nintendo will fare, it'll be alright, it'll be fine. But to be honest, Wii Fit is a big company with big expectations and Wii Fit is just another example of how smart they are. Fat and lazy people(put me there in the lazy) just don't got enough time or effort to workout and is very understandable. Everybody wants to have a body, right? And isn't a third party company coming out with a peripheral on a bike for future preferences? Is understandable and reasonable, it makes sense. If it gets you results, then go right ahead. There's millions of people wordwide that take this seriously, do you? :)

You might as well say that Nintendo just sold 11 million Wiimotes.

most sold doesn't mean best. My best of the decade is Halo 2, Gears of War, GTA San Andreas, God of War, WWF No Mercy, Rock Band, and others but not in that order

How many unites has San Andreas sold worldwide? Come to think of it, what is the best selling video game of all time?

To answer your question, Dr. Gaskill, no, I don't care. Nintendo has a license to print money regardless of my or anyone else's opinion and nothing we can do will change that. I think that if the mainstream casual market ever deteriorates, then they (Nintendo) will either have to come up with the next big thing or come crawling back to us. And from what I've seen, the hardcore demographic is none too forgiving.

My favorite part of Wii Play is the underscore/semi-march music in the little tank game.

Don't judge me; I'm an aspiring composer.

Wii Fit sold the most so that means it's the best game, right? Even better than Halo 3 because it sold more, right?

The Wii Play claim is a POS only reason people buy it was for the Wiimote.
