I predict the upcoming World of Warcraft movie will be the single best video game to movie adaptation in film history. It's being directed by Sam Raimi (Evil Dead, Spider-Man) and I've just learned the script will be written by Robert Rodat, the man who wrote Saving Private Ryan and The Patriot.
Here's what Sam Raimi told MTV News about the movie:
"I've never made a video game movie, but my approach would be to work with the best character writer I can find, which in this case is Robert Rodat, and tell a great character story within the fantastic environment of the world of WarCraft, while staying true to their mythology."
Here's why I think it will be the best video game movie ever: World of Warcraft is a huge complicated game-world with a complete history, culture and socio-economic system. Rodat has created personal stories set in worlds with similarly complicated back-stories -- The Revolutionary War and World War II. Given the complicated historical and political milieus of these two historical periods, it would have been easy for Rodat to fail. When confronted with the scope and complexity these settings present, most artists would have either bogged down their stories in the minutia of the film's universe, or ignored it by telling a "normal" story, and thus lose the uniqueness and power of the setting. Rodat didn't fall into these traps in his films. Instead, he created personal, character-driven stories set against huge historical and cultural backdrops.
Raimi is no stranger to epic story-telling either, having created the recent Spider-Man movies and Army of Darkness, where an epic story is told on a very limited budget. The combination of the talents of these men will create the best video game movie ever. Mark my words.
I further predict many fans of World of Warcraft will not like the movie because the main character is not a Tauren Druid.
