Are you ready to see Venom turn over a new leaf? Apparently the folks over at Columbia/Sony feel that way. However, don't look for Venom's new self-help initiative to involve a 12 step program to wean himself off human brains. Among other details about the long-rumored solo project for Spider-Man's evil symbiote-clad nemesis, the biggest bombshell dropped about the film so far, is that Venom will in fact be a GOOD GUY in the film.
What a difference a week can make in the development of a film. Just last week, we were told that the scribes behind the recently-successful Zombieland, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick would be working this script. Now, it seems that the job will go to Gary Ross (Pleasantville, Seabiscuit,) who will also likely have a director's chair waiting, as well. Ross, who is also currently re-writing the script for Sam Raimi's upcoming Spider-Man 4 after James Vanderbilt and David Lindsay-Abaire were initially tapped for the job, seems to be Team Columbia's favorite relief pitcher as of late. Additionally, Ross will be serving as a producer, alongside penultimate Marvel god, Avi Arad. The upcoming film will apparently attempt to portray the character of Venom in a new light. According to Variety:
"The Venom, an arch enemy of the web-slinger in the Marvel Comics series, will be transformed into an anti-hero who becomes a defender of the innocent."
Of course, the concept of Venom as a pseudo-vigilante is not new in the world of comics. For a time in the 90's, Eddie Brock's alter-ego, Venom, was known as "The Lethal Protector." In perhaps the most prominent storyline of that era, Venom turned up in San Francisco, where he ended up taking the cause of protecting a group of homeless people from criminals. This resulted in finally finding acceptance among other people as he joined the group, who turned out to be an underground society descended from the great 1906 earthquake. (And yes, you read that correctly; Marvel retconned San Francisco's homeless issues.) However, that happiness would be short-lived as an evil foundation kidnaps him in an attempt to spawn more symbiotes for their own sinister uses. He eventually would count on the help of his old nemesis, Spider-Man to be rescued from their clutches.
Whether the film will be a variation of that particular storyline (minus Spidey's involvement,) remains to be seen. However, Variety did make the point in regards to its connection with the existing Spider-Man film franchise, that "the spinoff will start from the drawing board." ("PR to Fanboy" Translation: Reboot.) Therefore, the involvement of Spider-Man 3's Eddie Brock/Venom played by Topher Grace (who just now signed to be in another franchise update, Predators) seems more unlikely as each day passes.
Is this good OR bad news? Personally, I can only publish how much of a trainwreck I thought Spider-Man 3 became so many times before I wear myself out. Any change is good, I suppose. However, the fact remains, that Sony/Columbia holds the film rights to Spider-Man in perpetuity. (Which is kind of a long time. Well, technically, it means "forever.") What they do with the franchise IS going to happen whether we like it or not. Right now, we have the fourth (and likely final) Raimi Spider-Man film on the horizon, and now, this "solo reboot" film of the character who was just unceremoniously dispatched in THAT film's previous installment.
Oh, what a tangled web (pun intended) Columbia/Sony has weaved.

I just hope they use the original Venom and not the spider-man 3 version. Because which is better little venom or big bad-ass Venom?!

Well as a long time Spiderman and Venom fan, I 29 years old so that's a like 15-20 years of fandom, Venom was never really a bad guy. Even in his own comic series he was a good guy that protected the innocent, well Eddie Brock's Venom. He and Eddie had a natural hate for Peter Parker and Spiderman and that's why they always fought. So for any body who is saying this wouldn't work is wrong. And I second the idea of a Maximum Carnage movie, by far the best series in Spiderman history. Loved the series, the game, and Venom and Carnage even more after it was all said and done. I even brought the graphic novel last year just to read it again all over again like the first time.

it might be bad but i will still watch it because venom is AWESOME

There has been at least one run of Venom when he had his own comic series in which he acted as, exactly as he is described here, an anti-hero. He had briefly made peace with Spider-Man/Peter Parker and acted as a guardian in good ole' San Francisco. He also has many other "relapses of heroism" such as abandoning the symbiote as well as religious enlightenment. Brock is still an antihero now as the character "Anti-Venom".
There is plenty of CANON history in Venom's run for a movie of him as an anti-hero to be done.

@ majintipp.... you sir apparently have never read the comic... Venom used even innocent people as targets to get to Spiderman! This movie will indeed suck whale balls!

What everyone here keeps forgetting is when Venom was introduced, he was only evil to Spiderman. He never hyrt anyone that he thought was an "innocent" as he called them (who was basically everyone else).
As far as a Carnage movie is concerned. To be done the rigth way it would have to be at least rated r if not NC-!&. Cassidy (Carnage's human half) was a sic freak, killing as early as childhood (like 8).Would it be awesome YES, but only if they took the filter off and let him run wild, which they would never do...

Well this can work I mean one Venom has teamed up with Spidey on more then one ocasion especialy in the first Playstation game of Spider-Man and Eddy Brock is now Anti Venom so sense Venom is both a good guy and bad guy I guess this can work I'm surprised he is a good guy in this. but that is the power of the symbiote the symbiote is connected to its current user and that person can use it for good or evil nuff said

they didn't do venom any justice in spiderman 3. he alone would have made the movie very interesting. now he is good. what is going on in hollywood. well that is what marvel get for selling out to disney.

Actually Venom WAS a good guy. He just happened to hate Spider-Man and it went to his head sometimes. So long as Spidey was out of the picture he was a hero.

Venom is not a good guy. Boo
PhantomGamer669
i dont get it dont comic fans want to see the evil venom in his own movie kickn everyones butt in all kind of ways why would they want to water him down and make him a good guy or an anti hero?? makes no sense besides i want to see the next batch of spidey movies come out and show some more teeth any way
drh1975
Venom as a good guy? I don't know about that. At best, he's an anti-hero, like the Punisher or Deadpool.
thechamp1985
I hope this movie gets shelved. There is nothing "good" about Eddie Brock. He is a tragic figure whom at times can garner some sympathy. But, this good guy act for the movie , in my opinion is a mistake. I'll still end up seeing it though.
The Emperor's Champion
No need to reboot.
It's dumb that I have to say this in every Venom article...
Eddie Brock Jr. died. Eddie Brock SENIOR is alive.
The symbiote got blown up EXCEPT for the piece in Dr. Connors' lab.
The real Venom survives completely.

Was wittle Topher tired of pwaying the villain? aww

I just hope that one day some of us comic book fans and movie fans can one day live in the same society. I grew up reading the comics and was forced to watch the classic 80's action movies, with that said I take the comic book based movies for what they really are, just movies. Grant it the last spider-man movie was about as x-men 3 and I really don't see Venom to go anywhere either. But if they do decide to do this I hope they don't try and "re-boot" later on down the road cause honestly hollywood, lets waste more money.

Is a Venom font going to be on newer PS3s?
