USA Today reports that Bungie's Master Chief-less, "glorified expansion pack" Halo 3: ODST has sold 2.5 million copies and brought in over $125 million since its release two weeks ago.
Yesterday, our own Patrick Klepek argued in favor of Bungie's approach with ODST. In his piece, Patrick reasoned that should the game go on to be a financial success, which it clearly has, and it’s only been out a few weeks, it would send a clear sign to other developers that taking risks (or at least, thinking about established brands in new ways) can be financially and creatively beneficial.
Well, ODST is a certified hit, and while it will most likely be a while before Bungie takes another adventurous sidestep with its juggernaut of a franchise, at least now the developer has a green-tinted frame of reference should it decide to try something “new” like ODST in the future.
SInce we already kind of know the upsides, do you see any potential downsides to ODST's success?

downside is the success will be short lived. firefight will soon get boring with no matchmaking and the story isnt epic enough to stick with it for the next year or so. and with uncharted 2 coming out, the sales will drop dramatically. the halo3 multiplayer experience will keep halo alive until reach but ODST wont last long. I'm not a hater by the way, i own ODST and think its a great game :D

I purchased mine this past Friday. $60. I popped it in and played for about an hour and decided that I like the new gameplay. While $60 is expensive for an expansion, I am enjoying it. And because of that I dont mind the money spent. When Uncharted 2 comes out I'll buy that too. As long as I enjoy th egame I dont mind paying for it.

I want this game, but not for 60 bucks. This is an add on so it should not be sold at full game price. Will wait till price drops or get used.

That was actually a funny joke, plus 2 E-Rep.

2.5 million is also the amount of tears RRODisback has shed since hearing this news.

While the ODST has made money, you would have to wonder how much more it would of made if it was 40 instead of 60. true this might mean they would have to cut off the 2nd disk multiplayer but I am sure most people wouldn't of minded since its all about firefight anyway.
also if you take 125 million and divide it by 2.5 million you get 50 so for each 60 dollar copy they make 50 bucks. now if they lowered the price and made it 40 dollars and you take off the 10 dollars (which probably goes to retailers) and you sold twice as many (5 million copies) you would of made 150 million instead.
so if the price was lower would they have been able to sell twice as much? who knows but, if everyone who is bitching about the price would of bought a copy then yes i think they would of been able to do it. so in short I think they accually did themselves a disservice by making it so high.
and yah I bought a copy and yah I think its awsome but, for me I had saved up a bunch of money to spend on games and since the summer game market was lame I had the money burning a hole in my pocket (plus I didn't wany to play WOW anymore.) so it just worked out.

What people dont realize is that you get Halo ODST plus an invitation to participate in the Halo Reach Xbox LIVE multiplayer beta whatever it may be. Anyways, most people bought odst because they wanted recon armor.

Look at someone who just picked up ODST, they get all the maps, a new 6 hour campaign, and firefight mode.

ODST has sold 2.5 Million copies. And it hasn't even seen the Christmas rush or Black Friday.

I just hope they put in a multiplayer expansion pack something like halo but with ODST armor and shields it would be fun.

Of course the downside being that developers will think that they can skimp on the product relative to its price tag. I like ODST, Halo, and Bungie, but the Halo haters out there are using ODST's price point as a legitimate criticism. A 6 hour campaign, 3 new maps, and a fun, yet bare bones matchmaking system, i.e., no film recording, or rewind? But Marty's music almost singlehandedly covers up these serious blemishes.

I'm so sick of people complaining about the 2 disc 60$ crap. BUNGIE GAVE YOU A FREE DISC!!! There is nothing, absolutely NOTHING, lacking from the ODST disc. I fired up several other FPS's, and you know what I found out? Several of the most popular ones don't even have 2 player co-op, let alone multiplayer functionality or anything original at all. You still shell out 60 bucks for THOSE games. But you all assume that because there are two discs that you MUST be getting screwed somehow. I challenge ANY of you to give cold, hard evidence that the game is lacking anything crucial enough to justify asserting it's "over-priced". So, really, if you have SUCH an issue with this "sub-par, incomplete" game, then go play one of the "better" ones and quit being such a downer!
I personally could barely even tell I wasn't playing the master chief anymore, which is the number one complaint. WHO CARES WHO YOU ARE? The game was fun and significantly more challenging than 3.

Downsides? I sort of think that this is the start of fanboys thinking that a sort of expansion is going to be the same exact thing as what they've been playing for years, except with different skins for the playermodels.

Halo get's people riled up... it's crazy
SourProphit
Downside? I'd say that it gives people an opportunity to whine and flame, but they would have done that no matter what.
I've spent $60 on games with less content than ODST, and they weren't even as fun and enjoyable as ODST.
My only complaint is, like so many people who actually have played the game instead of just rushing onto websites to flame, the lack of matchmaking for the campaign and firefight. I understand the reason for it in firefight, sorta, but not campaign.
TRAINED_KILLER
yep its a good deal, and some places like cosco are selling it for less than $60 so if the price tags bothering u.........

Why are PS3 fanboys so intrested in what money is spent on what game? A good game is a good game PERIOD. I recall 2 years ago I bought Heavenly Sword for PS3 for 60 bucks finished it in 5 hours. I loved the game even tho it not worth 60 bucks the time I spent with it was awesome. How can you possibly have any issue over a game that is giving you all of Halo 3 maps,an awesome 5-6 hour side story, firefight and beta code for reach multiplayer. However 60 bucks for a JUST a 5 hour game PS3 fanboys see no problem with that? Hello pot,Hello kettle!!!!
