Everyone loves zombies. Well maybe not people getting eaten by zombies. But being gamers, there's nothing we enjoy more than splattering the soft, gray skull of a member of the undead with the butt of our shotgun. Such is the subject of this week's Soapbox. The Sess gets literary on your ass and explains in great detail why zombies are such an important part of American pop-culture, why they work so well in video games, and why they've evolved over the years. So before you chow down on some tasty grey matter, spend some time with this week's Sessler's Soapbox.

You forgot to say Zombies have sweet Dance Moves.

All of these comments about vampires got me thinking...
Did Twilight ruin the Vampire genre?
I personally think so... I liked the vampires from 30 days of night; when I think of a vampire, that's what I imagine.

I have always viewed zombie as more kin to natural disasters. When you think of it zombies are like a storm, large or small, on a national or global scale. Zombies come to your area and cause chaos and havoc and the popular thought on how best to survive one is to "hunker down" and wait out the event just like you would with any type of storm.
Even zombie movies kinda have that disaster movie feel to them. As in there are a group of people trying to work together and wait for some sort of rescue or relief from be it from zombies or a blizzard. So my point is don't think of zombies as monsters but more as a hurricane or swarm of locus and just either hunker down or RUN!

I would like everyone here to know that should they become a zombie I would have no problem putting 2 in the head.

Also check out World War Z by the same guy.

Adam,
I've always thought the role of zombies in videogames is more akin to that of a more visceral robot. That is, something you can kill in huge quantities, bathe in their blood, dismember their corpses, etc, and still feel you are a "good" person.
When I watch the old zombie movies I also get the feeling that they represented the fear of Death, literally. Not our own necessarily but the deaths we inherit. Like how we take for granted how much death is always around us, probably out of necessity because it's too overwhelming to think about. What if one day it was just impossible to ignore; what if we couldn't just seal up our dead, bury them, and try to move on?

very h o m o-e r o t ic episode

I laughed when Adam talked about his friends simultaneously said that the bar is where they should fend off against the zombies. It just reinforces that almost every group of friends has what they think is a foolproof plan. Once the zombies strike I'm gonna take my family and run to the gun store since its right next door. hopefully ill get there before other people. after an excellent montage of my rag tag family equipping some serious heat we are going to epically fight our way to a Walgreens near by where my friends will all ready be waiting. It has food there for a pretty damn long time, only one main entrance making surveillance easy, and a pharmacy section that can be used for possible injury or illness. plus there's a ladder to the roof for possible emergencies. Anyone else want to share?

I like the fact that Adam analyzes games in terms from a more meta-critical (for lack of a better word) perspective-relating them to significant cultural and political trends in society. After all there is no reason why video games cannot be discussed in this way like movies, or TV shows, or other elements of popular culture.
I typically disagree with Adam's more left wing political slant on these discussions-this episode was not SO bad in this regard, except for the remark in regard to everyone fearing communism, which actually constituted a real threat for a time-fortunately the doctrine is now really an anachronism on the dust heap of history, except for a few countries.
However you do not always have to agree with someone to respect the kind of analysis that they do, and the issues that they raise. Good job on this one Adam.

Guys, let's go to The Arsenal. Oh, by the way Sessler, you've got red on you.

Acctuly if Adam goes to that bar if a Zombie attack happens, make sure the jukebox has the Queen song "Dont stop me now", And i hope he can live off of the bar snacks.
Some how this reminds me of some movie.I might have to ask my friend Shawn what the name of it was.

That was a good soapbox. Surprising amount of talk about movies, but good soapbox nontheless.
My 2 cents on Zombieland... I saw it. I liked it. The only thing I really have to say about it that hasn't really been said is that For Whom the Bell Tolls by Metallica has been playing on a loop in my head ever since I saw that montage at the beggining.

Zombieland was very, very, very good! I loved it from the first second till the last (that is after the credits). If you are a fan of zombies you have probably already seen it, but if you are a fan of funny, buddy films go see Zombieland. This seems to be a time that if you love zombies you are in a lot of luck what with Dead Rising 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Zombieland, Dead Snow, Max Brook's new book, all coming out! I feel blessed!

Winchester anybody.

I think that's going a little bit too deep for video games, Adam...

i agree with sessler
i hate zombies, b/c of the thought of dying, and also the the thought of like a hand crashing thru a door, and making you jump. also i think it would be a lot scarier to fight the fast zombies, instead of slow. however something still forces us to rent that horror film or play L4D at midnight.
Hey sessler what do you think about the future of Gamestop, and how the downloadable full games (xbox live on demand) are arriving, do you think gamestop should worry, or when should they begin to worry about their future?
